Once upon a time a young and aspiring youth prospect of FC Barcelonaai??i??s famed La Masia academy entertained the idea of joining Italian giants AC Milan because he feared heai??i??d never establish himself as a first-teamer. The name of the bright but presumably disillusioned youngster: Xavi.
When Xavi was on the cusp of breaking into FC Barcelonaai??i??s first team he found another La Masia graduate ahead of him – Pep Guardiola. The fellow Catalan is probably the first true superstar made in La Masia, a genuine Blaugrana legend. Measuring up against the then already legendary no. 4 was never going to be an easy undertaking, even without considering Pep Guardiolaai??i??s hero status among CulAi??s.
If Xavi had taken up AC Milanai??i??s offer and joined the Italian giants, who couldai??i??ve faulted him?
Luckily Xaviai??i??s mother opposed the proposed move, and the rest they say is history.
The thought of an FC Barcelona side without Xavi at the heart of it is unthinkable these days. Whereas youngsters enjoy the trust and sometimes preferential treatment ahead of well-established and expensive stars by the technical staff these days, back then La Masia prospects werenai??i??t necessarily as highly rated. It can be argued that La Masia just became world-renowned as the excellent assembly line it is over the last half-a-decade or so. At present 17 out of the 24 players registered for FC Barcelonaai??i??s first team were unearthed from La Masia. During Pep Guardiolaai??i??s career as FC Barcelona player the ratio wasnai??i??t even remotely close.
However, not all players who came through La Masia and are registered with the first team can be considered the finished product just yet. FC Barcelona is producing so many top quality prospects these days that is impossible to allocate sufficient playing time to each and every one. Some of FC Barcelonaai??i??s brightest talents are still with Barcelona B to provide continuity in their development.
On one hand itai??i??s testimony to FC Barcelonaai??i??s commitment to youth development, on the other hand it also creates something of a problem. A dilemma some might say. Some youngsters are too good for Barcelona B yet still short of challenging the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi for a starting berth. La Masia is producing more youngsters than there are slots available in the first team. In a way FC Barcelona has become a victim of its own success. As a result the development of quite a few players is stunted.
One prominent example for a player who is risking his growth as a player: Jonathan dos Santos. The younger brother of fellow La Masia graduate and Mexico international Giovanni dos Santos is playing hardball by refusing to leave the Blaugrana on loan. He probably fears he could lose his only chance at succeeding at Barcelona.
Just a few years ago Jonathan dos Santos was regarded as one of La Masiaai??i??s most promising prospects, though eclipsed by his best friend Thiago Alcantara. While the latter has firmly established himself as a first-teamer, Jonathan dos Santos isnai??i??t even playing Copa del Rey fixtures. The Spanish Cup is traditionally the competition where Spainai??i??s heavyweights are more inclined to feature youngsters.
While Jonathan dos Santos stance is admirable, it borders on the idiotic. His refusal to leave on loan has arguably damaged his long-term ambition of making the grade at FC Barcelona beyond repair. By not playing heai??i??s not going to showcase the full extent of his capabilities, even if he were to feature for a lesser side. At 22, just a year Jordi Albaai??i??s junior, Jonathan dos Santos is about as far removed from first team action as Earth is from the Moon. Also not helping his case is the in-house competition provided by Sergi Roberto who, at 20, is even younger than JDS.
Dos Santos is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Heai??i??s clearly not enjoying the trust of Tito Vilanova, yet heai??i??s registered for the first team, meaning heai??i??s ineligible for Barcelona B, thus not playing for either side, in any competition. The once promising youngster is on the verge of becoming a forgotten man at the tender age of 22.
At the start of the ongoing 2012/13 campaign several teams were interested in securing a loan deal for the youngster (most notably La Liga side Mallorca). JDS refused. They even came back for him in the January transfer window ai??i?? once again he flat-out rejected any approach even after his primary contribution to the current season has been warming the bench. Sergi Roberto, though in the same boat, has age going for him. He can emulate JDS (as in refusing to leave on loan) at least for another season without risking his status as ai???prospectai???.
Nevertheless, the youngster has shown some promise in the few fixtures he has featured in, most notably during the pre-season. However, itai??i??s really hard to distinguish the midfield prospects coming through La Masia as they all excel in passing and one-touch football.
The likes of Roberto and Dos Santos would probably be more appreciated, if not praised, had their talents emerged anywhere else but at Barcelona. Without the slightest hint of exaggeration, those two are probably better than the majority of their peers at most English Premier League clubs. Thereai??i??s a reason why the cream of the crop of European football regularly send scouts to attend the matches of Barcelonaai??i??s various youth teams ai??i?? to identify and swoop for the next Lionel Messi or Cesc Fabregas. This rather unfortunate circumstance is made possible by Spanish labor law which prevents youngsters from signing a professional contract with a football club until they are 18.
Cesc Fabregas is the most famous, or rather notorious, case of this loophole. Arsenal FC ai???recruitedai??? the youngster when he was a 16-year-old, only to be sold back to FC Barcelona 8 years later at a massive ai??i??35m plus add-ons (which will likely exceed the grand total of ai??i??40m).
Itai??i??s the reason why FC Barcelona is trying to prevent a similar scenario unfolding before them by tying two of their most promising prospects, Jean Marie Dongou and Gerard Deulofeu, to new deals. While the latterai??i??s contract doesnai??i??t expire before July 2014, Dongou is a free-agent at the end of this season. Those who have witnessed the Cameroonian in action have already earmarked him for superstardom and go as far as champion him the new Samuel Etoai??i??o. Which is funny since itai??i??s Samuel Etoai??i??s foundation that brought Dongou to Barcelona in the first place.
If Dongou wasnai??i??t vertically challenged (1,73m) heai??i??d probably resemble the archetype of the modern no. 9: pacy, technically gifted and two-footed. But then again, Lionel Messi isnai??i??t the tallest player either and heai??i??s far and away the best player on the planet.
Though itai??i??s Jean Marie Dongouai??i??s contract that is expiring this season, itai??i??s winger Gerard Deulofeu whoai??i??s making quite a few people at Barcelona nervous. So far he hasnai??i??t signed a new contract with FC Barcelona while his current buy-out clause still stands at ai??i??10m ai??i?? peanuts to some of Europeai??i??s richest clubs.
In the ongoing 2012/13 Segunda Division campaign he has already scored 13 goals and provided 4 assists in just 21 games. In all likelihood, this will probably be his last season with Barcelona B. Heai??i??s too good for Spainai??i??s second tier division yet not quite at the level required to challenge Pedro or Alexis for a starting berth. Furthermore, heai??i??s also facing competition from Cristian Tello and Isaac Cuenca who have already been promoted to Barcelonaai??i??s first team in 2012.
Apart from his contractual situation that needs to be sorted out, Deulofeuai??i??s work ethic leaves much to be desired as well as his overconfidence, if not cockiness. For a kid who has been at La Masia since the age of 9 he seems to lack the humility that is usually associated with players groomed at Barcelonaai??i??s academy. Perhaps heai??i??s just too eager to prove himself as the standout talent of La Masia, perhaps he just doesnai??i??t know any better, but Tito Vilanova and his technical staff have a real gem (or problem) on their hands.
If properly managed Deulofeu can become the next big thing to emerge from La Masia since Thiago. However, his exploits for Barcelona B have ensured that thereai??i??s no shortage of suitors for his talents, with Manchester City credited with an interest in Deulofeu. Then thereai??i??s his relatively affordable buyout clause which could lead to another Cesc scenario down the line if Deulofeu leaves Barcelona. But chief among all concerns related to Deulofeu is his attitude. His quality and potential are undoubted ai??i?? itai??i??s his head that is causing the most worries.
Deulofeu is at a crucial stage in his formative years. Barcelona can offer him the ideal platform to evolve into a world-class player, but is he willing to humble himself and accept that he has to earn his place with the first-team as opposed to use the interest in him as leverage for assurances?
Conversely to Jonathan Dos Santos situation, Deulofeu should stay at Barcelona, even if heai??i??s going to warm the bench more often than not. As opposed to Dos Santos who is facing world-class competition from the likes of Cesc Fabregas or Sergio Busquets, Barcelonaai??i??s wingers save for Pedro, who has been on a resurgence as of late, are anything but world-class (or not just yet). Besides, sitting on the bench will teach Deulofeu one or two things Dos Santos has in abundance: humility and modesty.
At any rate, with or without Deulofeu, Dos Santos or Dongou, La Masiaai??i??s academy of excellence will still find, nurture and polish FC Barcelonaai??i??s stars of tomorrow.
A future in the image of Johan Cryuff has been secured.
