The 1977-78 Bundesliga season proved to be the last time that FC KAi??ln lifted the league title. It still remains the season that hosted the game with the biggest winning margin in Bundesliga history. And it is also the first Bundesliga season in which a referee managed to KO a player.
Back in 1973, one of the founding members of the Bundesliga, Eintracht Braunschweig, made their first trip down to the Regionalliga Nord after finishing 17th in the German top flight. Prior to their relegation, Braunschweig became the first club in Germany to advertise their sponsors on their jerseys. Thankfully for all those associated with the club, their stay in the lower echelons of German football was limited to just one year. Their return to the Bundesliga was nothing short of impressive as the Lower Saxony side managed ninth, fifth and third place finishes in three seasons.
Following a promising third place finish in 1977, finishing just one point behind champions Borussia MAi??nchengladbach, Braunschweig were looking to go into the 1977-78 season as serious contenders for the league title. Looking to make a statement, GA?nter Mast, CEO of the clubai??i??s sponsors Mast-JAi??germeister, enticed World Cup winner Paul Breitner away from Real Madrid for a record fee of 1.6 million DM. This amount was far from astronomical figure by the standards set by Breitnerai??i??s former clubs but it stands as a record transfer fee spent by Braunschweig even till this date.
On joining Braunschweig, Breitner had said, ai???I joined Eintracht Braunschweig with the hope of becoming German champions and winning as much as possible,ai??? Ai??but what transpired from then on was far from what heai??i??d hoped for.
The Lions went into the season with their morale on a high following the arrival of Breitner but their joy was short-lived as they slumped to a 2-1 loss away at Kaiserslautern. This game went into Bundesliga folklore for one of the most bizarre incidents ever seen on a football field. Danilo Popidova had silenced the Betzenbergstadion with a 50th minute strike but the hosts leveled the score thanks to a penalty converted by Reinhard Meier. But it was the action that led to the penalty that caught all the attention.
Kaiserslauternai??i??s Josef Pirrung was on course for the Braunschweig goal when he took to the ground outside the penalty area. The players continued to play on, deeming Pirrung’s fall to be a dive, but referee Werner Bergers thought otherwise. Bergers blew his whistle and pointed to the spot, sending the Braunschweig players into a frenzy. Leading the protests was Paul Breitner, followed by an incredulous bunch of his teammates. Amidst all the chaos and confusion, Bergers shoved an elbow out to keep the onrushing Reiner Hollmann away from him only to hit the player between the carotid artery and the larynx, knocking Hollmann unconscious.
Hollmann was stretchered off, Meier scored the penalty, Josef Pirrung scored a second and Braunschweig went on to lose. Hollmannai??i??s memory following Bergersai??i?? swing is shoddy at best. ai???He [Bergers] turned around hastily, I felt something on my neck and then it was lights off.ai??? Hollmann was taken to an ambulance in the interiors of the Betzenbergstadion and recollects waking in front of the doctor. ai???ai???Whatai??i??s going on here?ai??? I asked the strange face in front of me. ai???You passed out. We are inside the Betze.ai???ai???
Hollmann went on to learn that his side lost 2-1 but things didnai??i??t end there for Braunschweig and Breitner. In a post match interview, Breitner went on to say, ai???I didnai??i??t know that referees in Germany were allowed to knock players out on purpose.ai??? The club also appealed for the game to be replayed only to have it turned down. As Hollmann puts it, ai???The result was that the game was not replayed, I had a mild concussion and had to listen to a whole lot of jibes over the next few weeks. Oh, Paul Breitner had to pay 5000 marks for his statement to the press.ai??? 5000 marks may have seemed a large number to most other professionals in Germany but for the former Real Madrid man it was a meager amount.
Braunschweig never really managed to get going after this demoralizing loss and ended up finishing the season in a disappointing thirteenth place. Breitner managed an impressive 10 goals in the league but Braunschweigai??i??s unimpressive finish saw the afro sporting defender return to Bayern Munich in the summer of 1978. The season also marked the beginning of the downfall of Eintracht Braunschweig as they managed only six seasons in the German top division over the next 35 years.
This may have been a far from memorable season for Braunschweig, Breitner and the lot, but Bergersai??i?? decision, his elbow to Hollmannai??i??s neck, and the resulting knocking out shall forever be etched in the memories of Rainer Hollmann, Werner Berger and all those present at the Betze on that evening.
