Indian Football: Can I-League Sustain Without Mohun Bagan?

As the dust settles on the decision of the All India Football Federation to ban one of Indiaai??i??s most successful clubs and reality dawns on their vast legion of supporters, you could excuse the I-Leagueai??i??s biggest fanbase for thinking that this decision could possibly mean doomsday for Indian football. For a team that was established in 1889 and that had the distinction of becoming the first Indian club to win the IFA Shield in 1911, beating East Yorkshire Regiment, conducting the I-League without it would be nothing short of a hammer blow to even the neutralsAi??ofAi?? I-League.

Is there another crowd puller in the I-League?

Itai??i??s no surprise that the Kolkata derby ranks 48^th in the list of top football derbies in the world. Such is the passion of the Kolkata crowd for this gigantic clash that in 1997, a reportedly 131,000 strong crowd witnessed the East Bengal-Mohun Bagan Federation Cup semi-final. In times when crowd attendances in the I-League are dwindling and at an all time low, the East Bengal-Mohun Bagan derby is a virtual face-saverAi??for the protagonists of the I-League. To think of the fact that this game may not be played for the next four years (assuming the Marners are made to qualify from the Second Division after their two year ban) will be virtually unthinkable. For years now, no match in the I-League has managed to match the crowd attendances and the passion as the Kolkata derby. Even the football crazy North-East teams of United Sikkim and Shillong Lajong Football Club have seen very average crowd attendances this year.

For the last six years, the I-League crown hasnai??i??t left Goan shores but none of the four Goan clubs have anything to show off besides their I-League trophies. Crowd attendances in Goa are at an all time low. According to last yearai??i??s match attendance figures in Goa, an average of less than 3000 people attended matches at the Nehru Stadium in Goa involving all four Goan I-League teams, while crowd attendance for some of the matches in Pune and Delhi could be counted on a single palm. In fact the ill-fated East Bengal-Mohun Bagan derby this year may have possibly drawn more numbers than ONGCai??i??s total crowd attendances for the whole season! The effect of the dwindling crowd-which will be made worse by the absence of the Kolkata derby and will be felt when AFC reviews Indiaai??i??s performance while allotting an AFC Champions League spot next season. One of the Club Licensing/League criterion has the average attendances of the League as its criteria, something that would definitely affect India ability to get an ACL spot next season.

Is there any value for Ten Action to broadcast the League?

And itai??i??s not just the fans that would be left with a sore thumb in their mouth. The official broadcasters of the I-League, Ten Action, who have signed a three year deal with the All India Football Federation and its marketing partners IMG Reliance, would be scratching their heads at the thought of losing the jewel in an otherwise ordinary crown. Last season, the I-League, riding on the wave of a non-telecasted League in the 2010-11 season, cashed on the excitement and signed a multi-crore broadcasting deal in the 2011-12 season. After being acquired by Zee television in 2010-11, Ten Action last year signed a one year deal with the AIFF and IMG-Reliance for about $ 1millionAi??last season. But IMG got their real monies worth after they sold the rights of the League to News Time Bangla, a regional Bengali Channel for a whopping sum of about $ 1-2 million. The major factor that clinched them the deal with the regional broadcaster was that football was the number one sport in the North East region and the Kolkata derby was something more than a sport for the Bengaliai??i??s.

This year however, Ten Action have offered far less money to AIFF as compared to what they paid last season. According to tvsportsmarkets.com, a sports business magazine that researches broadcasting deals around the world, Ten Action has acquired television rights for about 75 live I-League matches this season for about $400,000 a clear reduction from last years $1 million. IMG-Reliance has also failed to sell rights to e regional broadcaster this time around leaving it with more revenue losses. To add to its woes, the joint venture between IMG-Reliance, that is going to invest about 700 crore INRAi??in Indian football for the next 15 years will have to absorb production costs of about $ 3 million per season (Ten Action had paid for the production cost last year). There is a clear devaluation to the League since last year, at least according to Ten Action, something that would further deteriorate if one of theAi??best supported club doesnai??i??t take part in the League for the next three seasons. The fact that the broadcast deal this year was signed just 48 hours before the commencement of the League this year and there was a no-show in the Federation Cup this year goes to show how apprehensive Ten Action were about this project.

Can the League be without the biggest budgeted team?

It is no secret that Mohun Bagan is the team with the highest budget in the I-League even outspending big spenders Prayag United this season. Its reported Rs. 20 crore a year budget outnumbers by far the money spent by other teams in the League. Odafa Okolieai??i??s approximately Rs. 2.5 crore a year deal makes him richer than even some of Indiaai??i??s famed cricket players while this year the Mariners also broke the bank to lure Australian Tolgay Ozbay from bitter city rivals East Bengal for an approximate 1.5 crores a year deal. Even their Indian players like Syed Rahim Nabi and Nirmal Chhetri are not far behind earning sums in the range of 60-70 lacs a season.

It is this financial security offered by teamai??i??s like Mohun Bagan that has helped many kids take up to football and look to the sport as a serious career option. Mohun Bagan are also known to pick upAi??a largeAi??number of graduates from the Tata Football Academy every year offering them quite a decent package. Salaries paid to the likes of Odafa Okolie and Tolgay Ozbay are considerably higher than the average salaries paid to players in the Australian League and the MLS in USA. This no doubt is a defining factor that has attracted foreign World Cuppers like Carlos Hernandez and Densill Theobald as well as Rohan Ricketts to ply their trade in India. Although escalating player salaries is an issue that is haunting world football at the moment, the likes of Chima Okorie, Igor Skivrin, Tolgay Ozbay and Odafa Okolie wouldnai??i??t have mesmerized Indian crowds over the years had it not been for the Marinersai??i?? spending prowess. Their absence in the League could be a body blow to youngsters taking up to the sport in general

With Indian football at the crossroads of its existence, it would sometimes make sense to throw the rule book out of the window and think about the future and sustainability of Indian football. Yes, what Mohun Bagan did was absolutely wrong by the law and in no way should be condoned. But when we have a sport that is facing an uncertain future with dwindling crowds, no title sponsor for the past three years, a poorly broadcasted League and a Federation that is runningAi??short of cash, does it make sense to kill the hen that lays the golden egg?

Getting corporate teams into the I-League next season may guarantee you a few crores but it may not necessarily guarantee Indian football the fan following it so desperately needs. Mohun Bagan apart from a football team was a club that was formed by a socio-economic group- guaranteeing them fans for eternity. It would be foolish to expect a team backed by Videocon or Jindal Steel to attract the same crowd numbers as Mohun Bagan simply because the people may not necessarily take up to these new corporate clubs as much as they would take up to clubs formed out of their own socio-economic groups. Imposing a heavy monetary fine and banning the Mariners from the League this season along with probably playing some of their matches next season behind closed doors and banning them from buying players would make better sense rather than imposing a two year ban on them in total. This would definitely serve as a strong deterrent to teams in the future. After all you just cannot kill the hen that lays the golden egg.
