In this edition of The Talking Game, former Liverpool FCAi??striker Ian Rush talks with us about Bob Paisley, his semblance with Robin van Persie and what he expects from this present Liverpool squad.
Q: Can you tell us something about your childhood? How and when did you fall in love with the game?Ai??
Ian Rush: I think I was about 10 years old. I played a game for the school team, we won 8-4, and I scored all 8 goals. So it was really, and I was 10 years old, really.
Q: Who was your football idol during this period?
Ian Rush: I think that I supported Everton at the time, and there was a player playing for them, his name was Bob Latchford. He was the one that I used to pretend I was going to be.
Q: As you said you were an Everton fan when you were a young boy. Did you think twice about opportunity when Liverpool came along?
Ian Rush: No, not really. I think because I played for Chester first, and Everton came and watched me, and the manager there didn’t think I was good enough. So really then when Liverpool came along, there was no hesitation. I just wanted to give it a go.
Q: Were there any other big name clubs that you were close to joining during that period?
Ian Rush: Manchester City and I think Manchester United. Manchester City were very interested.
Q: Can you tell us something about the relation that you had with Cliff Sear and how big an influence he was in your development as a footballer?
Ian Rush: I think the reason why I went to Chester was Cliff Sear. He was the one who really looked after me and made me feel at home. He was good at looking after the kids of that age and just made me feel really comfortable. I relaxed and that helped me achieve my best football.
Q: Can you provide us with a snippet of the most memorable conversation you had with Bob Paisley? Something which is very special for you?
Ian Rush: I think that was mainly when I got into the first team at Liverpool. I played seven [matches] and basically I hadn’t scored but we won most of the games, and the following season Bob Paisley dropped me from the team. And when I went in to see him, he told me I have to be more greedy to score goals, and I have to be more selfish. So we had a big argument actually. I asked for the transfer. And then I went out to play for myself, and I played for the reserve team and I scored 3 goals. And after that, Liverpool had about 3 injuries so Bob Paisley just threw me into the first team and I scored two goals against Leeds United. And I was playing for myself, to leave Liverpool, but then 6 months down the line I managed to stay on and start scoring goals. But at the time I was playing to get a move from Liverpool. But at the end of the day Bob Paisley never really put me on the transfer list, he’d just done it to try and make me angry.
Q: Moving on to a different subject. During your career you experienced two terrible tragedies, the Heysel disaster followed by the Hillsborough disaster. How psychologically difficult was it for you and the players to recover from those incidents?
Ian Rush: It was different, I think, the two terrible tragedies. The Heysel was a bit different, where we weren’t really sure what’s happened until after. At the end of the day, we just played the game really not knowing, just like a cup final, like a normal game. We just wanted the game to finish so we could see people that we knew. But Hillsborough was completely different, we knew what happened there. Especially for the people in Liverpool, it was a very difficult situation. It’s very hard to overcome that. We still have memories now, and you have to move on, but you still have memories of how hard it is.
Q: Everton stood by Liverpool during those tragic events, and both the clubs faced each other in the final of the 1989 FA Cup. Can you tell us a bit about the atmosphere at Wembley during that match?Ai??
Ian Rush: It was unbelievable. I think it’s basically the first time and the only time ever. When you go out to Wembley, you normally find one team’s in red, one team’s in blue. You know which side your supporters are. In that 1989 final, it was red and blue all around the ground so no one knew where the Everton supporters where, no one knew where the Liverpool supporters were. It was all joined together. So I think it was really for Merseyside itself it was an incredible feat, where folks joined together, next to each other, one in the blue shirt and one in the red shirt. It was an incredible feeling. I think the supporters had done Merseyside proud in that final.
Q: How did you find settling down in Italy and adapting to their style of football?
Ian Rush: It was difficult. You have to be more settled off the pitch to perform best on the pitch. And for the first three months when I was in Italy, I did find it difficult. I think not just the lifestyle, but also the playing style. Juventus was very negative football that they played, whereas Liverpool was very positive. I found it hard to adjust for the first three months because at Liverpool they always like to attack, but at Juventus it was a different sort of game.
Q: Back to Paisley. Was there any significant difference in the managerial style of Bob Paisley and Kenny Dalglish?
Ian Rush: Yeah, they’re different. I think they both had the same things, but it was different. Bob was more of a quiet man and he didn’t say a lot really. Kenny being as a player as well, it was difficult for him to move from player into manager, but he’d done it really well. Kenny was a bit more talk-worthy and he was helping more. Bob Paisley, though, he said things in about 10 seconds, where Kenny would probably talk a bit more. But they’re both sort of similar, but in different ways.
Q: Moving on to Liverpool in the modern day. They’ve made a brilliant start to the season. Do you think they can sustain their title challenge, and what are your expectations from this squad?
Ian Rush: I think they’ve made a great start to the season. I think if you come around Christmas time ai??i?? because we have games on the 26th, 28th, and the 1st of January ai??i?? so I think after those three games, you’ll have an idea of how the league’s going to pan out. I think they’ve had a great start, and I think there’s better things to come. And the expectation, I think they’d like to be in a top four. I think it’d be a good achievement if they can finish in the top four this season, and i think it’d move them one step ahead.
Q: Is there anything in particular that Liverpool need to do to strengthen their squad?
Ian Rush: I think it’s just any player that becomes available, that the club is interested in, they have got to be better than what they’ve got. I think I’d just wait and see. I think Liverpool can beat any team in the world when they get the right 11 out.
Ai??Q: If you were to pick one footballer from the present generation who reminds you of yourself when you were younger, who would it be?
Ian Rush: I think in a way, I’m a bit like Robin van Persie. He always scores goals and he always seems to work hard as well.
Q: Personally, what’s the most memorable goal you have scored in your career and why?
Ian Rush: Everyone asks me that question, but the question is, I don’t really have a memorable goal because every goal I score I get the same feeling. It was my job to score goals when I was playing. Whether I score a goal from one yard out or from 30 yards out, I still got the same feeling. But most memorable game would probably be the 1986 FA Cup final when we beat Everton 3-1. It was, for me, like everything rolled into one. We had just won the league the week before. We were playing the first FA Cup final that Liverpool played Everton. As a kid I dreamed about scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final. And my dream came true. We’d done it and we’d beat Everton as well, so it’s like everything rolled into one.
