The youngAi??Arsenal FC full-back has been making a name for himself with his performances in the youth tournaments and NextGen Cup. We take a closer look at the former Barcelona defender.
It is with trepidation that we single out this young Arsenal lad, Hector Bellerin who recently caught many eyes in Arsenalai??i??s game against CSKA Moscow in the NextGen series. What stood out about Bellerin was that his game is not predictable; from the start to the end, he kept on beating his opponent with pure pace and trickery. He looked fearless, kept on playing the game and always looked dangerous throughout.Ai??He has the potential to be a really big name in the future.
So, who is Hector Bellerin?
Hector Bellerin is an attacking full-back who turned down the offer of staying at Barcelona for a move to Arsenal.Ai?? The 18 year old came through the famed La Masia academy where he was viewed as an exceptional talent who could challenge for a first team spot one day. He signed for Arsenal along with another talented player, Jon Toral, as part of the deal to take Cesc Fabregas back to Barcelona.
The 18-year-old Spaniard signed his first professional contract with Arsenal in the summer of 2012. Although Bellerin is predominantly a right back, he played the first few years as a winger. He has tremendous technique for an 18 year old. His off-the-ball work-rate and positioning sense make him very versatile and reliable at the same time. Since joining Arsenal, he has played quite a few times for the reserves despite being a regular for the U-21 side.
Jon Toral has called his compatriot and close friend, “the most talented player in the youth teamai???. That is a high praise considering the fact that Arsenal have one of the most talented U-21 squads in the league.
Having begun his career as a winger , Bellerin has been converted into a marauding full-back by coach Terry Burton, who has been a big influence in his career so far. Bellerin has been a regular for Burtonai??i??s side in the NextGen series, the U-21 Premier League and the youth cup. The Catalan has also been named in the first team squad this season in the games against Reading and Coventry. He will be hoping that he can emulate what a former Barcelona graduate, Cesc Fabregas, has achieved at Arsenal having joined the Gunners at same age.
The Spaniard admitted that manager Arsene Wenger played a crucial role in bringing him to London and it didn’t take long for him to decide. “I met Mr.Wenger and it went well,ai??? he said.
Throughout this season, Bellerin has showed lots of different yet valuable attributes, the most important being the ability to think quickly and effectively when under pressure. One player to whom Bellerin can be likened with is Jordi Alba. Alba, like Bellerin, mostly played as a winger during his time at the academy and then was converted into a full-back at Valencia.
Bellerin has been a menace going forward this season as well being solid defensively. He has always provided a constant option on the wings for his teammates. In the games against CSKA Moscow in the NextGen series and against United in the U-21 Premier League, he showed more defensive nuance then he is given credit for because of his attacking instincts. The scariest part is that he is only 18 and has a lot of time on his hands to improve his all-round game ai??i?? and most probably to become a part of Arsenal’s history.
Although he has been at the club for a short time only, he has openly admitted his love for the North London club. Recently he disclosed the day he fell in love for the club ai??i?? the day a club legend made his mark once again:
“I was watching in the crowd the night that Thierry Henry made his scoring comeback against Leeds in the FA Cup. The reception he got from the fans overwhelmed me and that was the night when I really fell in love with this club. I would not want to be anywhere else.ai???
Strength
As a former winger, Bellerin has the natural ability to maraud down the right flank with outrageous pace and incredible stamina. He says that he styles his game on the Brazilian legend Cafu, a brilliant role model for any youngster. Due to his experience of playing as a winger, he has a distinct advantage over others when facing a full-back, which makes him a nightmare for the opposition defence.
Weakness
Bellerin himself admits that he needs to concentrate on his defensive abilities if he is to become a first team regular at Arsenal. He is also very poor in dealing with aerial balls, which even though is not a prerequisite for a full-back, means he can exposed by opponents at times if not improved upon. Like other attacking full-backs, Bellerin also gets caught out of position a lot of times due to his eagerness to get forward. He will have to learn to pick moments to attack so that he doesnai??i??t get exploited by opposition wingers.
Verdict: A good future prospect for Arsenal
As mentioned at the start, it is hard to forecast the future of a footballer,Ai??but one can say there is no doubt about the fact that Bellerin has all the natural abilities to succeed. He has all the attributes needed to be a successful full-back in the modern era ai??i?? someone who can attack and defend with utmost ease. He is athletic, quick and perhaps most importantly has tremendous beliefs in his own abilities. Initially his natural instinct was to attack but under the guidance of Terry Burton he is improving his defensive side of the game, steadily. With Carl Jenkinson just a few years older than him, Arsenal now have two good options for the future.
