Will Dinesh Sau apologize to Rinki Kumari now? After all he had slapped the captain of a certain U14 girls football team just few months back. Her fault? She was asking Sau to issue birth certificate for her. Mind you, she had gone through the legally illegal process of getting government officials to do work in India. She had already paid Rs 200 bribe, a significant amount for her poor family, to the official. Still her work was not done. When she pressed Sau to complete the formalities, she was slapped. Her team mate Sunita Kumari was further humiliated by being asked to sweep the floor of the office. All this, for the first girls team from India which was travelling to Spain to play in two prestigious tournaments. It is moronic characters like Dinesh Sau who are dragging the country behind on its path to progress.
To understand this story we need to learn a bit about the Yuwa project. Based on Jharkhand, Yuwa is a non-Government Organization which used football as a vehicle to fight girl trafficking and child marriages in one of the most under-developed parts in the country. As per latest reports Jharkhand tops the list in human trafficking in India and it is a state where more than 60% of the female population is illiterate. Through Yuwa girls in Jharkhand villages are brought into football teams where they learn to take care of themselves as well as each other. The often attend studies in Yuwa clubs and in a state where girls are often married off by the time they turn 15, participants in Yuwa teams, as per their website, are never married before they reach the legal age. Franz Gastler, an American citizen who has been working in a tribal village for past four years, was an English teacher for poor children when he was requested by the girls to teach football and he eventually became the football coach for ai???Yuwa Indiaai??? a U14 team built solely with girls from local villages. Yuwaai??i??s reach has also increased over the years as now they boast of over 200 girls under their wing, having started with 15 in October 2009. 13 year old Pushpa Toppo, a Yuwa girl, has even represented India in AFC U14 tournament. In 2012, Yuwa became the first organization from India to win the prestigious Nike Gamechangers Award.
The path to Yuwa India participating in tournaments in Spain opened up in April-May 2012 when a group of students from Mondragon University travelled to India and ran into Gastler during a trip to Dharavi Slum in Mumbai. The students were asked to play and train with some of the Yuwa girls in wee hours of the morning. Impressed, they had the idea of inviting the team to Donosti Cup. Donosti Cup is held in San Sebastian, Spain every year and promotes the cultural inter mingling between youth from different countries. Over 400 teams from all across the world, boys and girls of different age groups, participate in this tournament. Sensing the obvious problem of funding these girlsai??i?? trip, the students also floated an online petition to draw funds from general public. Donosti Cup organizers promised to take care of their expenses when they reached San Sebastian. Help came from other quarters as well as Gamesa Wind Turbines Private Limited became their sponsors. After getting past numerous hurdles, both financial and logistical, a team of eighteen Yuwa girls, aged between 12 and 14 finally boarded their flight to Spain in last week of June. Their team profile read ai??i?? ai???Yuwaai??i??s Donosti team girls come from seven neighboring villages, include two sets of sisters, and represent five different religions.ai???
Upon reaching Madrid the girls were first treated with a visit to one of most iconic arenas in the world ai??i?? Santiago Bernabeu, thanks to the Real Madrid Foundation. In Donosti Cup, Yuwa India was placed in Group D along with Wisconsin International (USA), Anorga Kke B (Spain) and Amara Berri K (Spain). Each match was of 50 minute duration. Yuwa India opened their campaign on a dampening note, slumping to a 3-1 loss against the side from USA. However, showing immense amount of grit and mental strength Yuwa India bounced back in style winning the other two group matches without conceding a single goal. Anorga was beaten by a solitary goal while Amara was dispatched with a 2-0 scoreline as Yuwa reached pre quarter-final as group runners-up. Santa Clara was a mountain too high for the girls in the knock-out round as they lost 5-0. Interestingly, both the teams that defeated Yuwa India in Donosti Cup reached semi-final and Santa Clara was eventual runners-up.
Next up was Gasteiz Cup, held in Vitoria-Gasteiz in Northern Spain. Ten teams took part in the U14 girls tournament and Yuwa India eventually finished 3rd after two wins, two losses and a draw. A 2-0 win over local side Gasteiz FC eventually sealed their podium finish. For the girls this truly was an opportunity of a lifetime. And it was not just about their performance on the pitch, their performance off it when they showcased traditional dance of Jharkhand was picked out as one of the most memorable moments of the 2013 edition by Donosti Cup officials.
Gastler had this to say upon their return, ai???The odds were piled up against them. First, they had to play on an astroturf field ai??i?? something they had never done before; second, the rival teams were healthier and stronger; and third, my girls had never played beyond the borders of their native villages unlike their opponents. Despite all this, they did just greatai???. According to team coaches their best performers were strikers Lakashmi, Punam and Shivani, midfielders Manisha and Rinki and defenders Sunita and Sushma.
For the Yuwa girls the Spanish sojourn might have ended but their path to make a difference begins now. Using their example female empowerment can be done in Jharkhand. For that Yuwa would need support from authorities as well as stake holders of Indian football, both official and unofficial. It is easy to celebrate success after they attained it but very few segments in media came out in their support before they left.
