Eintracht Braunschweig are back in the top-flight of German football after a 28-year absence. A founding member and one of the Bundesliga‘s most iconic clubs, the Lions with their long colorful history are a welcome addition to the 2013/14 season.
The Lions of Lower Saxony
The club from Lower Saxony are a true Traditionsverein. Originally founded in 1895, Eintracht Braunschweig have been a successful club in the upper tiers since the early days of German football. Their quality and financial stability allowed them to participate in the Bundesliga, when it was formed in 1963.
Braunschweig won the 1967 championship with some austere defending. They conceded only 27 goals the whole season; as for the rest, they depended on Lothar Ulsass who scored 14 of the team’s 49 goals that season. Braunschweig took the Meisterschale, and their defensive record stood for 21 years.
In 1973 Braunschweig became the revolutionary first-ever Bundesliga club to play with a shirt sponsor ai??i?? a deal with Jaegermeister worth DM 100,000. And fair play to the Lions: from 1963 to 1975, Braunschweig set a Bundesliga record for going 370 straight games without a single red card.
But Braunschweig were also implicated in the 1971 Bundesliga match-fixing scandal, which involved 10 games, two coaches, 6 officials, 7 teams, and over 50 players. Only, whereas other teams had been paid to throw games, the Braunschweig players were being paid incentives to perform well. Nevertheless, match manipulation by a third-party was illegal, and two Braunschweig players were suspended while another 10 received fines.
Eintracht Braunschweig’s Decline and Renaissance
Eintracht Braunschweig fell into a period of decline beginning in the mid-80’s. They were relegated from the Bundesliga in 1984, and fell as low as the Regionalliga, where they languished for most of the 1990’s. But even in decline, Braunschweig managed another record: in 1987, they became the only team ever to be relegated with a positive goal difference (52:47).
Braunschweig’s recent revival began in a moment of darkness. In 2007/08, Braunschweig faced the prospect of failing to qualify for the newly-created 3.Liga, and consequently, falling to the fourth tier of German football for the first time ever. But under newly-appointed manager Torsten Lieberknecht, the Lions held it together and dodged relegation on the very last match day of 2007/08.
Lieberknecht, alongside sporting director Marc Arnold, have since taken Braunschweig from strength to strength. From the struggles of the 1990’s and early 2000’s, the Lions have since become one of the more enjoyable teams to watch. Braunschweig’s renaissance saw them surge back up to the top-flight after winning the 3.Liga in 2011, and then finishing runners-up in the 2.Liga just two years later.
Mission: Bundesliga
Thanks to Braunschweig’s surprise promotion, Lower Saxony will have three teams in the Bundesliga for the first time ever. Alongside Braunschweig, there’s historic rivals Hannover 96, as well as VfL Wolfsburg, against whom Braunschweig have yet to play at this level. Braunschweig will play Wolfsburg on Matchday 8, while the derby against Hannover is set for Matchday 12.
For Lieberknecht, just being in the Bundesliga itself is a “gift.” Braunschweig’s main goal next season will be survival, and the manager approaches the tremendous task ahead of him with a healthy dose of realism. For Eintracht to have rocketed back up to the Bundesliga so quickly was already a surprise in and of itself; to maintain Bundesliga status would be another unlooked-for blessing.
“We know next season wonai??i??t be a walk in the park,” said Lieberknecht.
“We want to present ourselves in the Bundesliga like we have so far ai??i?? [When we were promoted to the 2.Bundesliga] people thought we had the weakest squad then and weai??i??d be relegated again. We want to prove people wrong again, and become the kind of team that will make it uncomfortable for others to play us.”
Preparations Underway
Sporting director Marc Arnold has not been idle as Braunschweig prepare for the challenges of life in the Bundesliga. The primary focus for Arnold, so far, seems to be strengthening the team’s midfield and attacking options.
Braunschweig signed Omar Elabdellaoui on a permanent deal after the ex-Man City player spent half a season with the Lions, providing four assists in 12 appearances. Also from the Premier League came NCFC’s Simeon Jackson on a two-year deal. The striker’s work rate and versatility have already made an impression, as he scored in Braunschweig’s 2-1 win over Wolfsburg in a pre-season tournament.
Meanwhile Jan Hochscheidt joins from Erzgebirge Aue, and Timo Perthel from MSV Duisburg. The club also welcomed back a familiar face in Torsten Oehrl, whose last stint with Braunschweing included 8 goals in 32 appearances. And ex-Mainzer Marco Caligiuri brings another dose of Bundesliga experience to the newly-promoted team.
Braunschweig continue their preparations with friendlies against Athletic Bilbao (July 20), Caykur Rizespor (July 21), and West Ham (July 27). They will take on Arminia Bielefeld in the first round of the DFB-Pokal in August, and their Bundesliga campaign kicks off with a home match against Werder Bremen.
It is difficult to say how Eintracht Braunschweig’s Bundesliga return will pan out. But given how far they’ve come in recent years, the season should already feel like its own kind of victory.
