Perhaps some of the Tottenham faithful have considered replacing “Audere Est Facere” with an alternative maxim, this transfer window:
“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got”.
Chairman Daniel Levy has, quite rightly, earned himself a reputation for the odd masterstroke. In 2008 he talked Berbatov’s price up to A?30 million when he was already a lost cause to Manchester United. Two years later he used the same gift for haggling to secure the services of Rafael Van Der Vaart for a paltry A?8 million. A force to be reckoned with, is Daniel Levy. He doesn’t know when he’s beaten. And therein lies the problem. He won’t admit defeat. Ever. If his terms aren’t met, it’s onto the next target, and he thinks the battle is won.
Meanwhile, the likes of Leandro Damiao and Joao Moutinho have stayed put. Wesley Sneijder and Fernando Llorente have been missed, and the list of players who went on to strengthen their rivals is endless. Sergio Aguero, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Mario Balotelli, Gary Cahill, Phil Jones were all available had Tottenham “dared to do”, and they did indeed make an attempt for each.
Daniel Levy’s commitment to the club cannot be doubted. The man is a beast at the negotiating table, and by all accounts has secured exactly the deal that he wanted for a new stadium, and not before calling the bluff of the Government, the Mayor of London and the Olympic Committee.
Sir Alex Ferguson has publicly questioned Levy’s morals after the Ezekiel Fryers transfer. Spurs wouldn’t meet United A?6million asking price, and so he left for Liege for a small fee. Six months later, he’s at White Hart Lane in a move that left Ferguson furious, and the Tottenham faithful applauding. It was a smart, dubious but legal navigation of a tribunal and F.A. rules. (Liege, for their part, insist that Fryers was homesick so they let him go for a reduced fee). Levy had got exactly the deal that he wanted, as always. Because otherwise, it doesn’t go through.Ai??But it can be to the club’s detriment.
His modus operandi is to bid far below the asking price – the type of bid that he’d dismiss out of hand without further conversation. It might go like this:
“We’ll let you have Player X for A?20million”.
“We’ll offer you twelve”.
“A?18million and he’s yours”.
“Ten”.
“A?18million, Daniel”.
“Eight and a half, final offer”.
The acquisition of Van Der Vaart was a once-in-a-generation move which Daniel Levy will forever try to repeat, but the odds are heavily against him. Even when his hard-line has worked, there’s been a separate price to pay. The incoming fee for Berbatov was extortionate, but negotiated up until the final minutes of the window. That left no time for a replacement, and so FRAIZER Campbell (last seen heading to Cardiff City) was lent to the club as part of the deal. A similar high price was found for Luka Modric, but again, protracted haggling left no time for a replacement.
The bi-annual last minute game of ‘call my bluff’ has been at the club’s expense. For the second time in three years, Tottenham found themselves applying to the F.A. for special dispensation for a transfer after an agreement was reached after the deadline. With Van Der Vaart it worked; with Joao Moutinho it did not. Villas-Boas and those before him have been left with no time to find their man.
What is to say that clubs cannot discuss a deal outside of the transfer window? The window is the designated period for signing contracts, not talking to other clubs. If a deal with Joao Moutinho was missed by mere minutes, why wasn’t the same deal immediately agreed to go through in January?
Leandro Damiao is a tale of two seasons. In 2009 Tottenham announced a partnership with his club International, which includes first option on their outgoing players. Since his debut the following year, Damiao has attracted Tottenham’s interest. Each summer, his price is exorbitant as the Brazilian season is in full flow. Every January, Tottenham’s strong position means that Levy is reluctant to splash the cash. Meanwhile, tagged “the New Ronaldo” by the old Ronaldo, Damiao has been a regular for his country and was the Olympic Games’ top scorer. Spurs’ refusal to meet an early (realistic) asking price is exacerbated each window by an ever-rising price.
Spurs currently find themselves in fourth spot, with a decent chance of a Champions League place. They were in an even stronger position last January, but foresook the manager’s preferred options in favour of two free transfers, neither of whom lasted through the summer. This year, the same opportunity presents itself. But does Daniel Levy see it as an opportunity, or a predicament? In today’s Premier League a club has to spend substantially to stand still, and the concern is that he will not.
The committee approach to transfers at White Hart Lane has been called into question by supporters. More puzzling is that this committee is headed by Daniel Levy himself. It is his money to spend (well, ENIC’s, if truth be told) and his expertise is in the financial world. One would be very surprised if he matched this expertise with the required footballing intelligence at the top level. His involvement ought to be stipulating the highest price for a purchase, and the lowest for a sale – negotiate if necessary, but don’t be afraid to take the odd hit and accept the odd negotiating loss, if it strengthens the squad and consolidates a place in the top four.
Otherwise, if Daniel Levy sticks to the same principles, the fear is that he’ll always get what he’s always got – the characteristic Tottenham “avoidable near-miss” is going to be cause for more grief in May.
