Cash-rich Middle East clubs are reportedly eyeing up a big money move for Chelsea FC defender John Terry in the summer.
Reports from UAE suggest that two-three clubs are eyeing a move for the experienced defender. Al Nasr, where former England manager Sven Goran Ai??Eriksson is the sporting director, Al-Ain and super rich club Al Jazira are the names that have been linked with the Englishman. Manchester City owner, Sheikh Mansour, is the chairman of Al Jazira and he has already made an attempt to sign Terry for City back in 2009.
Middle east, like China, has attracted some big footballing names in recent years and financial incentives that they are able to offer is highly lucrative. But it would take more than just money to make John Terry leave the club that he loves so much.
While it would be a massive coup for the clubs involved, John Terry will effectively put his chances of a transition to a managerial or administration role on ice with a move to the Middle East. His wages at clubs in the Arab Gulf might make his current wages seem like loose change, but that will not compensate for the loss of publicity, PR opportunities and opportunities for growth as a manager of men that he would get by continuing to stay in England, or even Europe.
Case in point – World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro may be leading the good life presently, but we’ve barely heard a peep out of him ever since he made his move. Cannavaro may not have his eyes set on a managerial posting someday, but Terry certainly does.
Also, the fact that John Terry has been part of so many managerial regimes at Stamford Bridge that he must have forgotten the count, he is unlikely to take a call on his future anytime this season or at the end of it. Terry has had to make do with sitting on the bench for most part of this season, but knows that with Rafa Benitez gone at the end of the season, he can start afresh again.
