As Leicester Cityai??i??s striker Harry Kane- on-loan from Tottenham- saw his shot from outside the box sail over the crossbar in the 96th minute of their 2-1 East Midlands derby defeat to Derby, manager Nigel Pearson cut a lonely figure on the touchline. They had conceded 2 goals in the first half but managed to claw themselves back into the game with a 62nd minute goal. Ultimately, they could not salvage even a point. In reality, they never looked like getting a 2nd goal and hardly created any clear cut chances. The latest defeat meant that they dropped down to 6th position in the league. Winless in the last 6 games (4 losses and 2 draws which is the 5th worst in a 24 team league), theyai??i??ve won only 2 of their last 10 games.
Two months ago, following their win over Middlesbrough they reached 2nd spot. Since then, theyai??i??ve endured a poor run of form. Worryingly, theyai??i??ve lost to teams who are scraping the bottom half of the table: bottom side Peterborough, 21st placed Ipswich Town, 16th placed Blackpool and Charlton and 21st placed Sheffield Wednesday. At a time when their focus should be on moving up the table or at least holding on to their playoff spot, it is now on not dropping down further and missing out on playoffs altogether. The problem for Leicester and some other teams in the Championship is that theyai??i??ve caught the wrong kind of momentum at the wrong stage of the season.
This is that point of the season where the playersai??i?? fitness levels start dropping and consequently their performances. Every team experiences a wobble and it is important to stem the rot early; Cardiff, who were cruising at the top of the league, have experienced mixed results in the last few weeks -2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses- have seen their lead at the top cut to 7 points. For Leicester, any attempts to turn a corner have proved fruitless and Nigel Pearson is feeling the heat. The owners, Thai-led Asian Football Investments, had set promotion as a mandatory requirement. The owners have invested in the team since their arrival and Pearson is said to be under pressure to deliver. Pearson is a fan favourite as he led ai???The Foxesai??? back to the Championship in 2009 at the first time of asking after their relegation to the Football League One in 2008.
The thing that would surely be hurting Leicester fans though is the identity of the team that leapfrogged them into 5th place. It was bitter rivals Nottingham Forest who jumped above them in the league table. Forest, who were considered outsiders for promotion are the in-form team of the Championship with 6 wins in their last 6 games; they are undefeated since Billy Davies took over the reins in February. Having slipped out of playoff spots at the start of the season, Forest never regained their spot in the top-6. In fact, this upsurge in form is quite astonishing after a ai???month of madnessai??? had reduced the club to a laughing stock in England. In short, Forest have caught the right kind of momentum and are flying high.
To understand the magnitude of Daviesai??i?? achievements, letai??i??s look at the aforementioned ai???month of madnessai??? at Nottingham forest. At the start of the season the Kuwaiti owners had spoken of a ai???three to five year planai??? to bring Premier League football back to The City Ground. They said they wanted to appoint an ai???iconic managerai???. Ultimately, they appointed Sean Oai??i?? Driscoll, a nice man who got them playing the right way and though the results were mixed they were in contention for playoff spots. Inexplicably, Oai??i??Driscoll was sacked by the owners after a 4-2 home win against Leeds United which took them to 8th place- a point off the playoffs. The reason given for the sacking was that they wanted someone with Premier League experience. Oai??i??Driscoll had the fans on his side and his sacking seemed very harsh.
If that decision seemed harsh and inexplicable, the ownersai??i?? decision to appoint Alex McLeish as his successor was astonishing. McLeish had been sacked by Aston Villa after a poor 2011-12 season and before that experienced relegation in the Premier League with Birmingham. His teams played dull and dour football; a sharp contrast to the high-tempo football Forest played under Oai??i??Driscoll. In addition to this, the owners also sacked Mark Arthur, the chief executive, and Keith Burt, the head of recruitment. The drama didnai??i??t end there. If Alex McLeish was brought to give their promotion push further momentum, it did not quite transpire as expected.
Though the owners promised to back the Scot in the transfer market, the month of January passed without any major transfer activity. To add to the fansai??i?? woes, results took a massive downturn. Of the 7 games in charge, McLeish won just one game and the owners refused to sanction funds for his transfer targets. The final nail in the coffin came when the owners cancelled a final day deal to bring Peterboroughai??i??s George Boyd because of an alleged eye defect. Just 40 days after taking charge, Alex McLeish left the club by mutual consent.
At that stage, Leicester fans wouldai??i??ve been excused if they were laughing at their bitter rivals. But Billy Daviesai??i?? appointment, which at first felt like a populist choice, seems to have galvanised everyone. He has spoken of ai???unfinished businessai??? having failed to clear the playoff hurdle in 2010 and 2011.He has also spoken of ai???ignoring whatai??i??s going on at the clubai???, which is a clear statement that he is focussed on getting things correct on the pitch. Itai??i??s hard to point out what has changed since Daviesai??i?? appointment. They play in a 3-5-2 formation which seems to have stabilised the defence, conceding only 3 goals in the last 6 games.
They face sterner tests in the coming weeks though. Before the win last week against 2nd placed Hull City, all the wins under Davies came against sides below them. The win against Hull may give them the belief to add more impetus to their playoff push. Next up for Forest is a home game against 7th placed Brighton, who under Gus Poyet have made remarkable progress. Brighton are out of playoff places only on goal difference- they have 59 points, the same as Leicester.
Leicester, on the other hand, have a run of fixtures against mid-table teams who they have struggled to beat in recent weeks, before ending the season with 3 tough games: away to 4th place Crystal Palace, at home to 3rd place Watford and finally away at Nottingham Forest. If they can turn around this wretched run of form and win a few games, the season-finale derby could well decide who makes the playoffs and who doesnai??i??t; if not, then it could be a miserable 90 minutes at ai???The City Groundai??? for the Leicester away fans. To see their arch-rivals come from nowhere and run away with a playoff spot could be too much to bear. Itai??i??s all about momentum.
