Scottish club Celtic will face investigation from UEFA after fans set off fireworks at Celtic Park during the Hoopsai??i?? Champions league qualifier match against Cliftonville.
Celtic played the second leg of their tie against Cliftonville this Tuesday at Park Head. After taking a 3-0 lead in the first leg, away from him, the second leg was merely a formality. The Scottish side safely made it through to the next round after winning the tie 5-0 in aggregate, with goals from Ambrose and Samaras on either side of the half in the second leg. But it seems the fanai??i??s celebrations have given Celtic a cause to worry about as UEFA will now investigate the incident which saw three fire crackers being exploded inside the stadium with the referee having to ask for a stadium announcement in order to stop this.
“Three fireworks were exploded within Section 111, causing the Match Referee to require a stadium announcement to be made instructing such behaviour to stop.
“As a result of this unprecedented step by a match official, Celtic FC will now be the subject of a disciplinary action for contravention of the UEFA Safety and Security Regulations.” ai??i?? Read and official statement from Celtic regarding the issue.
Concerns were also raised regarding the safety and security of section 111 and the club has warned the fans that although they have refrained from closing down the section, it will be under observation during the upcoming matches.
“Following the events of last Tuesday’s match, the club’s position was to close Section 111, but following discussions between the club’s supporters’ liaison officer and representatives of the ‘Green Brigade’ that decision has been reviewed and the section will remain open.
“However, the situation will be monitored at both the Celtic FC v Borussia Monchengladbach match on Saturday, 27 July, and the Celtic FC v IF Elfsborg match on Wednesday, 31 July.
“The club is keen to work with spectators in Section 111 to resolve safety concerns. However, it should be understood that failure to stop this unsafe behaviour will require the closure of this area in Celtic Park.
“The club recognises the many examples of good support for the team emanating from this part of the ground and in particular the efforts of the ‘Green Brigade’ in organising positive displays which are commended.
“However, the unsafe aspects of spectator behaviour in Section 111 require to be addressed with immediate effect.” = The club informed the fans.
Last time Celtic faced disciplinary actions from UEFA was back in 2011, when the club were imposed a fine of A?21,000 for “the displaying of a banner of an offensive nature and the setting off of fireworks by supporters” during their match against Udinese.
