Money has never been more important in football than it is today and as a result Olympique Lyonnais know that they are a long way off from challenging the likes of PSG and Monaco
When Olympique Lyonnais were dominating the Ligue 1 in the noughties, and they really did dominate – winning 7 league titles in a row, their fans could have been forgiven for thinking that success will last forever. Lyon had a stranglehold on French football, winning the league by margins that would have caused envy even amongst the supporters of the Celtics & the Rangers in Scotland.
Les Gones, as Lyon are popularly known, had managed to build a very profitable football model as well based on an excellent youth academy and scouting system (primarily in the former French colonies of Africa). Lyon brought young talent, developed them into superstars and then sold them for exorbitant fees to clubs abroad. Jean-Michel Aulas, the president of Olympique Lyonnais, soon expanded this model which helped the club acquire some of the best players from other Ligue 1 sides as well. All of this helped keep the Ligue 1 title in Lyon from 2001-02 till 2007-08.
Tough Times
But in football, like with everything in life ai??i?? nothing lasts forever. First came the hugely unsuccessful reign of Claude Puel who became so unpopular that even his players refused to back him. Then came the body blow from which Lyon have still not recovered.
PSG managed to dominate the league during the first decade of the millennium because they were competing at a level playing field. But when the Qatar Investment Authority decided to bankroll PSG, the capital club competed at a financial level the likes of which Lyon could only dream of. Top players from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, to more recently, Edinson Cavani, were lured to the French capital.
AS Monaco then joined PSG at the high table following huge investments from the Russian businessman Dmitry Rybolovlev. Apart from having a billionaire benefactor Monaco does not come under the jurisdiction of the French tax laws which has helped them attract the likes of Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho, James Rodriguez and Eric Abidal. The 2013-14 season had therefore been billed as the shootout between PSG and Monaco.
Hope for the future
Lyon meanwhile have unexpectedly started this season very disappointingly. Despite winning their first two league games against OGC Nice and FC Sochaux ai??i??Montbeliard they have stuttered off late losing their last two games to mid table sides Stade De Reims and Evian Thonon Gaillard FC. The Rhone based side will also have to contend with a second consecutive season in the Europa League after being humbled by Real Sociedad in the play-offs for the Champions League group stage.
So can Les Gones, as Lyon is popularly known, compete with these billionaire backed clubs this season? The short answer, somewhat predictably, is no. But for Lyon the challenge remains in fighting for the third spot and a chance to play in the Champions League next season. Lyonai??i??s activity in the recently closed transfer market centred on this very objective. Arrivals included Henri Bedimo, Gael Danic & Miguel Lopes, three signings that could go a long way in securing European football come the end of the season.
The club also have an excellent youth academy in terms of players breaking into the first team. As well as talented young players Lyon also boast of the 3G force (Yoann Gourcuff, Maxime Gonalons & Bafetimbi Gomis).
Gourcuff looks to have finally emerged from the pressure that comes from being labelled the next Zidane and is comfortable playing in the role of the trequartista. Gomis has also settled nicely in Lyon and is now a firm fan favourite after scoring 16 league goals in the last campaign. Les Gones have also done well in tying down youth prodigy Clement Grenier to a long term deal after reported interest from Arsenal. But it will still be difficult to keep Grenier at the Stade de Gerland as he is sure to attract a lot of publicity during the course of this season not least because of his spectacular free kicks which have drawn comparisons to Juninho Pernambucano, the former Lyon hero.
Lyon also have a new state of the art stadium to look forward to as they will be shifting to the Stade des Lumieres – Stadium of Lights – for the start of the 2015-16 season. The 58,000 capacity sporting arena has already drawn comparison to Munichai??i??s Allianz Arena, Lilleai??i??s Grand Stade and Arsenalai??i??s Emirates Stadium. But as the Gunners will testify, moving to a new stadium is not a bed of roses as the financial burden imposed handicaps a club in the transfer market. But still the move to a new stadium has really lifted the spirits of the Lyon faithful as they believe that with additional revenue they will at least have a chance to compete with Franceai??i??s elite.
Verdict: While the heights of the noughties may never be reached again but if Lyon can forget their Champions League elimination and get their league season back on track there is no reason why they cannot compete with the likes of Olympique de Marseille for that elusive third spot in Ligue 1.
