Borussia MAi??nchengladbach are one of the hottest teams in the Bundesliga right now, between their teamgeist and tactical acuity. But how will the team fare as the January transfer window rolls around?
The discerning fan’s favorite of 2011/12, Borussia MAi??nchengladbachAi??suffered a severe set-back last season with the departures of Marco Reus, Roman NeustAi??dter and Dante for rival clubs. But the Foals are back on track this year playing the attractive, attacking football that has made them so beloved of connoisseurs domestic and abroad. And they’ve been in splendid form. Gladbach have lost just once since September, and after 17 matchdays they sit third in the league behind only Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen. What’s helped them get so far is an immaculate home record: 8 wins and 1 draw, a +18 goal difference, and the most goals scored of any Bundesliga team with 25.
There’s plenty of evidence to support a claim that — apart from this year’s German representatives to the UCL — Gladbach are the strongest candidates for a Champions League berth come season’s end. The two counts most prominently in their favor, at the moment, are Gladbach’s stunning teamgeist and the brilliance of their coach, Lucien Favre.
But they’ve got a long way yet to go, and in the meantime, the Foals’ sharp advantage is not as clear-cut as fans might hope. The unholy trinity of tactics, teamgeist, and (with January approaching) transfers could pose a serious stumbling block on Gladbach’s road to Europe.
Smells Like Team Spirit
Unlike their fellow Borussens over at Dortmund, Gladbach have been more blessed than most when it comes to injuries. Their relatively injury-free Hinrunde has set the conditions for a stable, settled team. With a reliable roster to choose from, Favre has only had to field 20 different players all season; it also means that the majority of Gladbach’s core starting 11 have played all 17 matches together. These team stats are unparalleled in the Bundesliga, and it has made for a qualitative difference in team spirit.
Gladbach’s teamgeist is readily apparent. They’ve demonstrated remarkable adaptability and resilience in the face of the myriad challenges a team faces during a Bundesliga season. Down 0-1 to a well-organized Nuremberg on Matchday 12, Gladbach turned things around with 3 goals in the last 20 minutes to earn a magnificent victory.
The team has also shown a remarkable intuitive understanding, from the defense all the way up to the front line. Especially notable are Gladbach’s so-called “Fab Four” — the attacking quartet of Juan Arango, Patrick Hermann, Max Kruse, and Raffael. During the Hinrunde, Kruse and Raffael alone combined for 17 goals and 11 assists, a whopping 80% of Gladbach’s total haul so far this season.
Max Kruse has commented on the team’s compatibility, saying:
“We go together very well. But itai??i??s not just [the attacking four]. The whole team is responsible for our success. ai??i?? Our goal is to establish ourselves among the top 10 in Bundesliga on a long-term. And in my opinion we have the quality to be in the top six after the season and to play European football.”
No Pain, No Gain
Lucien Favre is a great man manager as well as tactician. He’s had to be, given what his tactics are. Favre’s preferred footballing formula is lightning fast, well organized, and technically superior. It calls for alertness, pace, and control from every player on the pitch — individually, and also as a cohesive unit. If it sounds like a tall order, that’s because it is.
But the way Gladbach’s players have been pulling it off this season, you have to wonder if they’re actually all telepathic. A relatively settled starting 11 and the consequent teamgeist have no doubt contributed to the team’s fluid, intuitive play. Favre himself has also played a hugely important part. The coach emphasizes hard work and constant improvement in control, technique, and pace.
“Everything’s sped up these days and football’s got quicker as well,” said Favre to explain his emphasis on speed. “The players accordingly have to think and act faster.”
Under his system, the demands placed on players are high. With daily training that focuses on every aspect of the game, on and off the ball, and tactics that rely on physical fitness, Gladbach’s relatively injury-free season seems even more of a miracle. Compare, for instance, Borussia Dortmund. On average, they outrun their Champions League competitors by some 10 kilometers per match; that’s the equivalent of having an extra man on your team. But this physicality doesn’t come without a price: BVB routinely drop off in the final third and are currently suffering a plague of injuries. Of course, BVB and Gladbach play very different games and a direct tactical comparison is difficult to make. But there is a straightforward physicality that undergirds both teams’ success, and this physicality can be double-edged. The flip side of running your socks off is, after all, falling into the red zone.
For Gladbach, losing the safety net of a settled starting XI could amount to losing the whole plot. Injury will be their personal crucible, given the Foals’ reliance on intuitive teamgeist. And given the pace at which they play, injury seems more a question of “when” rather than “if”.
Midnight Train to Barcelona
Injury isn’t the only thing that could break up Gladbach’s rapport. The rumor mill is working overtime with the January transfer window approaching, and two names from this team have been making the rounds: Max Kruse and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Joining Gladbach from Freiburg for a bargain ai??i??2.5 million, Kruse was one of the top buys of the summer. The skillful, intelligent player fills in the role vacated by Marco Reus as a Neuneinhalber (9A?), an evolved version of the no. 10 role. Kruse has 8 goals and 8 assists so far this season, which means that he will go into the winter break as the Bundesliga’s leading front-man.
His talents have not gone unnoticed, especially with Gladbach’s good form of late, and Arsenal and Chelsea are two of the big shots supposedly chasing Kruse’s signature this winter. Chelsea continue to struggle with their rotating trio of misfiring strikers, while Arsenal are in desperate need of an understudy for Olivier Giroud.
More persistent than any English interest, however, is the name that Gladbach and Ter Stegen just can’t shake: Barcelona. The Catalan club’s search for a successor to Victor Valdes has ended with Gladbach’s 21-year-old goalkeeper, if recent reports are to be believed.
“We hope that he stays with us,” said Favre, “but when a club like Barcelona comes for you, wellai??i?? We have to be realistic, but remain hopeful.”
Ter Stegen was a key member of the 2011 team that catapulted Gladbach into the hearts of so many, when they houdini’d their way out of what looked like certain relegation and then went on to finish in 4th place the following season. Ter Stegen kept 15 clean sheets during this time, and conceded just 24 goals in 34 league matches. He is a modern keeper par excellence, the 11th outfield player and capable of setting the attack in motion with a dead-accurate pass. Confident in the area, comfortable on the ball, and possessed of excellent reflexes and judgment, Ter Stegen is already being touted as the German NT’s future number one.
This season, a makeshift defense has not stopped Ter Stegen from maintaining the same standard of goalkeeping that has made him one of Germany’s most sought-after number ones. A move to Barcelona is both likely and logical, given what both sides stand to gain: for BarAi??a, a 21-year-old world-class keeper at a bargain price; and for Ter Stegen, a chance to play at the highest levels with an excellent team well-suited to his style. The only loser in the equation is Gladbach, who stand to lose yet another one of their team lynchpins.
Whither Now, Teamgeist?
All of this has been a long-winded way of re-stating the obvious: in the modern game, clubs like Gladbach face some of their toughest enemies not on the pitch but in the boardroom. Success one season means someone’s coming after your best and brightest the next. But such is the story of the Gladbachs and Freiburgs of this world, and teamgeist is both a moment and modus operandi.
All told, teamgeist is not a terribly viable long-term strategy. But unless your club is bankrolled to the tune of hundreds of millions per year, then compatibility, adaptability, and smart tactics with a dash of blind luck are key. And as for the fans who chase these stories of unlikely glory, the fleeting victory itself is the better part of romance.
Bayern may be tearing up the headlines this season, but as far as stories go, Borussia MAi??nchengladbach are the team to keep an eye on. They may limp over the finish line. They might ignite the Champions League. Any which way, it will be worth watching ai??i?? for however long this story goes.
