TheHardTackle takes a look at Arsenal’s defence in the light of their strong start to the season; and examines whether they are capable of challenging for the title with the options they currently have.
Not every aspiring footballer dreams of being a defender in his early days. It is a role in which the player has to do the dirty work and is often referred to as the ai???dark roleai??i??. A striker or an attacking midfielder may miss several clear opportunities in a match and still get away it but a defender has only one chance. If he is not alert or if he makes a mistake, he may end up with a red card or may concede a goal.
In the recent years, Arsenal have not shown solidity in the defensive third and have been caught off guard several times. Even before a ball was kicked in preseason, it was well established that the Gunners were extremely light on numbers in the backline. Yet, no significant signings were made by Arsene Wenger to address this problem in the summer transfer window.
Ozil signing hides defensive fraility
After the unsuccessful pursuit of Gonzalo Higuain, Luis Suarez, Luiz Gustavo and Lars Bender, to name a few, Wenger pulled off a sensational A?42 million deal for one of the world’s finest No.10s ai??i?? Mesut Ozil. This led to tremendous jubilation among Gooners and also led to the defensive issues being ignored. There were calls for Wenger to be rewarded with a new contract within days of the signing.
Mesut Ozil had an immediate impact on his debut, sliding a nice pass into Olivier Giroudai??i??s path after making a very clever off the ball run. Arsenal were cruising to a win but then the defensive issues cropped up and the Gunners conceded needlessly. But the Gunners were in such a state of mind where they could not see anything wrong. However, the neutrals were quick to point out the frailties in the side. In whichever way you may perceive it, the transfer window business was not indicative of a team challenging for major honours.
After the early defensive tightness last season, the Gunners were not able to maintain it for a consistent length of time. It led many to question the impact of Steve Bould, who came in ostensibly as a defensive expert whose knowledge would do Arsenalai??i??s defending a world of good.
All the initial praise of his impact has gone with the wind, to be replaced with questions, even rumors of a rift between him and the manager. Both of them are at loggerheads over how to train the Arsenal defence. It is understood that Bould is keen to be more involved in planning sessions rather than merely following Wengerai??i??s pre-planned sessions.
Arsenal’s defence so far; and what lies ahead
Arsenal have had a tremendous start to the season losing just one game in the BPL so far, but the Gunners have been able to keep only one clean sheet.
The current set of defensive players and the goalkeepers that Arsenal have are all good players but none of them possess the individual brilliance of turning a game on its head. Letai??i??s look at the major players in the back-line and assess their strengths and weaknesses.
Arsenalai??i??s No.1 Wojciech Szczesny is highly rated among the players and the coaching staff and he has finally started to fulfill his enormous potential. But there are still questions about his attitude that he goes off the boil once he has a good run of form. However, he is still very young and if he gets his act together for a considerable length of time, he can be a force to reckon with in front of the goal. His man of the match performance against Crystal Palace on Saturday just emphasizes the above stated points.
In front of Szczesny, you have Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, the partnership has been putting in good performances ever since Thomas Vermaelen was dropped last season after a serious dip in form. However, they have been making silly mistakes that have led to goals by the opposition in situations where you would not expect a top team to concede. Mertesacker as a centre-half is very slow, which causes a problem for the team occasionally and Koscielny has led the team down with his decision making on quiet a few occasions.
When we look at the full backs, Bacary Sagna has been exceptional as a right back. But there are strong rumours that he may depart this summer as he runs out of contract. With only Carl Jenkinson left as an option at right back, Wenger will need to go shopping at the end of the season.
Till the January transfer window last season, the left full back situation was in a mess with Andre Santos ousted from the first team after a horrible first half of the 2012/2013 campaign. The signing of Nacho Monreal from Malaga in January brought some relief to the Gunners. The two Arsenal left full backs ai??i?? Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal are yet to prove their credentials as top quality defenders.
With the addition of Mathieu Flamini this season, the defensive play of Arsenal has been bolstered. He has a defensive mind-set and is happy to let others go forward.
The defensive setup at Arsenal at the moment seems to be alright for the time being; but if the Gunners want to challenge for trophies, they may just need to add a few more options to their ranks. Arsene Wenger’s men have kept just two clean sheets in the league so far and while the team’s brilliant attack has managed to score more than they have conceded in most of the game, this weakness might be exposed against stronger oppositions (like Borussia Dortmund did).
Moreover, Arsenal’s current depth in the defensive third of the pitch is the weakest among the title contenders. The likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have decent cover for their first choice center backs. Arsenal on the other hand only have Thomas Vermaelen as cover for Mertesacker and Koscielny, in fact Arsene Wenger has had to field Sagna in that role this season. So Arsenal do need to sign another center back in January to sort out this issue, a title winning side cannot just rely on their attackers to outscore their opponents on every match. As the saying goes, attack wins you matches, but defense wins you championships.
