Arsenal FC ai??i?? Top Five Moments That Defined The Season

As another season passes by, we look back at five moments which defined and shaped the 2012-2013 season for Arsenal FC.

Supporting Arsenal increasingly feels like watching a scratched CD on repeat: you know whatai??i??s going to happen eventually, and it seems to get murkier with each successive viewing. The 2012-13 season mirrored the previous one in many ways: the bearer of the captainai??i??s armband and the little boy inside him were swayed by greener pastures and shinier pesos; a passel of incoming personnel gave the team its seasonal bypass surgery; the start of the season was largely slow as the new players adjusted to a new country, new teammates, and Gunnersaurus unnervingly staring at them during training sessions; form was largely chequered, with steep, regressive gorges cancelling out every hillock of progress, and with positive runs of results being infrequent, muddy stars in a smog-filled skyline; there were lethargic and cataclysmic cup exits; a potentially worrying gap opened up between Arsenal and fourth place, and there was a media-wide clamouring to hammer in the final nail in this cannon-shaped coffin; the team got its act together with a gritty, determined final few months and sneaked into the final Champions League spot just as the fat lady was humming her last tremolo, consigning Tottenham to the ignominy of the Europa League once again. Although minimum objectives were achieved, the season was another one set against the overarching miasma of stagnation and surrogate trophies that plagues Arsenal currently.

Nonetheless, even a mediocre slab of chocolate ice-cream will have nuts and chips that blessedly stick to the teeth and linger on the tongue. This article looks back at five moments from Arsenalai??i??s season that stood out, either for the pivotal role they played in deciding the Gunnersai??i?? overall course, or because they were just so darned fun.

Santi Cazorlaai??i??s Signing

This is not to slight Arsenalai??i??s other two major summer signings ai??i?? Lukas Podolski, paragon of German efficiency, and Olivier Giroud, with lionai??i??s heart and modelai??i??s cheekbones ai??i?? but Cazorlaai??i??s arrival plugged a gaping hole in Arsenalai??i??s creative midfield, a term that was fast proving to be a bit of a misnomer. Having lost Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in a grievously wounding one-two punch the previous summer, Wenger tried to snare Cazorla and then Mata, only for moneybags Malaga and cash-rich Chelsea to flash their copious wares and get their men. A year later, when Santi was troubled in Spain as salaries went unpaid and Sheikhs reneged on promises, Arsene swooped in again, this time with success. And what a success it has been.

A few things about Cazorla were evident right from his first league appearance against Sunderland: his stunning ball control; his ridiculously impressive two-footedness as he swerved left and then right, coaxing defenders to commit before skirting past them; his propensity to drift to wide areas for space while playing at the front of a midfield three; and the comical largeness of his shorts. But more heartening revelations about the diminutive Spaniard were at hand as sunny autumn melded into harsh winter: there was stamina and steel to go with the gambol and guile; there was a refreshing imperviousness to injury that is so often lacking in creative lightweights; there was a willingness to dig in that went well with the ability to run rings around the opposition.

Cazorla played more Premier League minutes for Arsenal than any other player, and those minutes were marked with a variety of goals, from tap-ins and placed finishes to pile-drivers and whip-cream curlers. In a team that was becoming increasingly workmanlike, Cazorla brought sweeping paint strokes and violin flourishes to the table again.

7-5: Riding the Reading Rodeo

Although this victory didnai??i??t mean much in the end, as Arsenal eventually exited the League Cup to Bradford in a storm of embarrassment and chagrin, the match in itself will be afforded endless highlight reels in the years to come. A second-string but still potent Arsenal side faced Reading at the Majedski in the third round of the League Cup and got properly hairbrushed in the first half as the Royals raced into an astonishing 4-0 lead. Only Walcottai??i??s well-taken chip on half-time kept the game interesting.

As the second half progressed, ai???interestingai??i?? and other lukewarm adjectives were told to vacate the premises as things decidedly went full loco. Giroud came on and superbly placed a header in the top corner, Koscielny tumbled one into the net to atone for his earlier own goal, and Theo somehow wobbled in the equalizer with the last kick of normal time. Microphones were swallowed and newspapers were torn up. This had to be seen and believed.

Extra time was more of you-attack-I-attack-none-defends as Chamakh charged at goal like a well-gelled raccoon and swept a low shot in to give Arsenal the lead. The hysteria wasnai??i??t over: Pogrebnyak headed across goal and made it 6-6, cutting down viewersai??i?? lifespans further and seemingly taking the game to penalties. That was before Arshavin puttered half the length of the pitch in the 120th minute, raked a shot across goal that hit a defender on the line and fell to a gleeful Theo Walcott to slam home. Chamakh scored from a lob two minutes later, just to rub home the sheer ludicrousness of it all.

5-2: Rewashing Dirty Lilywhite Linen

Splendid, glorious dAi??jAi?? vu. While this result came too soon in the season to have lasting repercussions for either team, Arsenal entered this game off a poor run of results and badly in need of a pick-me-up. As ever, Spurs hilariously obliged after once again going in front, threatening to run away with the game, and then collapsing in a farrago of red cards, miscommunication, and lost confidence.

Emmanuel Adebayor, who has gone from chief villain to pitiable pantomime in Arsenal fansai??i?? eyes over the years, started the game well and diligently put away a rebound to give Spurs the lead. He then reinforced the fact that his head is stuffed with stale bales of hay, going in studs-up on Santi Cazorla and rightly being asked to cool off with an early shower. Arsenal were shortly back in it with Perai??i??s monstrous header, and a quick-fire double from Podolski and Giroud before the break practically consigned Spurs to the scrapheap.

Arsenalai??i??s fourth goal will live long in the memory: Szczesnyai??i??s punt forward was expertly headed on by Giroud towards Walcott; the English speedster played a measured ball through to Podolski on the wing, and the marauding German put in a rapier-like low cross for Cazorla to smash in. A fine goal by Bale frayed the nerves for a while, but a cool, calm, and moustached Theo Walcott finished the game off soon after with a well-placed effort. Letai??i??s do this every season?

Rosickyai??i??s Return

Poor Tomas must be cursing his luck that he can never get a full season under his belt without succumbing to a myriad knocks, niggles, coughs, and contusions. After enjoying a blazing run of form since the spring of last season, the war-weary Czech found himself on the treatment table yet again this term for this operation and that surgery. For some time, Rosicky was kept out of the starting eleven by Jack Wilshere, who was himself returning from a lengthy layoff. Just when one thought that Rosickyai??i??s season would pass by as a barely-used squad player, he answered the teamai??i??s concerned clarion call for the second year running.

From February onwards, Rosicky was virtually a mainstay in the Arsenal team, bringing with him a characteristic effervescence, bite, vision, and courage to play the forward ball. His willingness to run with the ball, coupled with his enthusiastic and effective stab-tackles to win the ball back when not in possession, ensured that he covered a fair number of miles every game in the teamai??i??s cause. He brought increased balance to Arsenalai??i??s midfield during a vitally important period of the season, essaying roles of the creator, the passer, and the heckler as the situation demanded. His two goals against West Brom were critical in picking up three points, and he shored up Arsenalai??i??s first line of defence along with Oxlade-Chamberlain after Arteta had gone off injured in the final game of the season against Newcastle.

This silkily coiffured, guitar-riffing thirty year-old is by far the most experienced member of the team currently, and Arsenal fans will hope he finishes his career with the club. A career henceforth spent more on the pitch than not, preferably.

Arseneai??i??s Post-Spurs Culling

Ironically, in a season where Arsenal took Spurs to the cleaners at home once more, it was perhaps their defeat to Tottenham at White Hart Lane that retrospectively had more positive results. After watching Arsenalai??i??s suicidal high line getting butchered, first by Bale and then by Lennon, Arsene Wenger decided to throw caution to the proverbial wind and drop his poorly performing captain, Thomas Vermaelen. This, along with a rap on the ears for Wojciech Szczesny who was dropped in favour of Lukasz Fabianski, turned out to be a twin masterstroke as Arsenal recorded a stunning 2-0 victory against Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena three days later.

Fabianski was playing with otherworldly confidence compared to his previous flappy, craven avatar, and the centre-back duo of Mertesacker and Koscielny was churning out clean sheets like nobodyai??i??s business. Following that resolute night in Germany, Arsenal went on an eleven-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, winning eight and conceding just five goals in the process. This hot streak was instrumental in getting Arsenal fourth place as Spurs dropped points in their tricky run-in to miss out again.

Dropping the captain and the first-choice goalkeeper showed admirable courage, something Arsene Wenger has been accused of not displaying in his recent footballing decisions. The optimistic Arsenal fans will now hope that similar courage and proactiveness is employed in the transfer window and that Arsenal make the additions their squad needs in order to genuinely challenge for honours. The more jaundiced fans will just hope that the scratched CD doesnai??i??t get any murkier.
