Sundayai??i??s big Premier League defeat at Old Trafford for Arsenal FC, just their second loss of the season saw the Gunners drop three crucial points diminishing their lead at the summit to just two points.
Though the Gunners failed to score, they will certainly not feel as if they were totally outclassed by David Moyes and his boys. Of course, playing at Old Trafford can be intimidating for any team and it gave United the advantage, but the slender one-goal lead could easily have been wiped out with the Gunners having many close shaves. The pre-match shuffle in the starting XI also didnai??i??t help their cause, as both Tomas Rosicky and Per Mertesacker were out due to illness.
However, this meant a recall for the Belgian centre-back Thomas Vermaelen into the starting line up, who has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal and has previously played just 24 minutes in the Premier League. Since being handed the captaincy last summer, it seems the Belgian has almost forgotten how to defend. The 27-year-old has probably buckled under the responsibility of leadership rather than thrive on it and has made too many costly mistakes.
Since joining Arsenal from Ajax in 2009, the Belgian has enjoyed tremendous success in the red sphere of North London but has found himself squeezed out by the scintillating form of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in 2013. However, Vermaelen has not lost hope and told the Belgian newspaper, Nieuwsblad:
“There are so many games in a year that that opportunity comes anyway. For now the manager picks for Per and Laurent, and you have to accept that.
“You may become frustrated but that does not help you move forward. I am confident that I will get chances again if I keep working on training.
“My relationship with Arsene Wenger is no different than other players. Our relationship is good. We talk occasionally but ultimately he makes the decisions. In my whole time at Arsenal my relationship has only been positive.
Vermaelen was included in the starting XI at the last moment at Old Trafford and there were understandable concerns that he might be off the pace. What more, last season at this venue he made a costly mistake misplacing a clearance into the path of his former captain ai??i?? Robin Van Persie to gift United the lead in the early moments of the match.
But the fears of the Arsenal fans were misplaced. He put in a spirited performance to remind everybody of his ability and to put forth a message that he is here for the long haul.
Defensively he was faultless and the statistics further highlight how effective Vermaelen was. His passing was of the highest order, having completed 39 out of his 43 attempted passes, Vermanelen registered a 91% pass completion average. Only Mikel Arteta(94%) and Phil Jones(95%) managed to record a better overall pass success rate.
He won 4 out of 5 headed duels and when Van Persie rose to head home the winning goal, he was not at fault as he was diligently marking in a different zone. He also made a staggering 11 out of 11 clearances, won 100 percent of his tackles and made four interceptions.
Even after putting in a prolific performance, Vermaelen could stop Arsenal from ending their 9-match unbeaten run in the Premier League. However, his performance will be the biggest plus from Sundayai??i??s defeat at Old Trafford for Arsene Wenger.
Vermaelen in a recent interview:
“I’m happy here. At no time thought to leave here. In football, it is sometimes hard to think far ahead because it depends on many factors. Also Arsenal. But at this moment I can not say anything else than that I’m happy.”
The World Cup is fast approaching and Vermaelen needs to get a consistent run of games to get a place in the Belgian national team. Even though he has professed his desire to stay at Arsenal and fight for a place, the fickle mindedness of the modern generation of footballers cannot be neglected.
Arsene Wenger will have to rotate his starting XI in-order to provide Vermaelen with sufficient playing time and to keep him ai???happyai??i??. Otherwise, he will be contemplating to call it quits in the January transfer window, as a lot of clubs are willing to have him on board.
Thomas Vermaelen is a world-class defender and a fan favourite with a very catchy nickname, the Verminator, and every Arsenal supporter would be hoping that Wenger manages to hold on to their captain.
