TheHardTackle takes a look at Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend, who is making waves in Premier League with his wonderful performances. Is he going to become a world beater with England?
At the start of the year 2013, Tottenham Hotspur academy product Andros Townsend was looking for playing opportunities elsewhere. Townsend was in the periphery of things at Tottenham for a long time. He had been deployed in various positions by managers Harry Redknapp and Andre Villas Boas. His rare opportunities came at positions he wasn’t entirely comfortable with, which included minutes as a left back, left midfielder and a right midfielder. With Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale occupying the wings, Spurs youngster was unlucky to break down a regular first team slot for himself even after 8 loan spells in League One and Championship clubs.
The turning point of Andros Townsend’s career was yet another loan move and this time it was QPR, a relegation threatened Premier League outfit under former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp. ‘Arry was familiar with the winger and his talents, he decided to unleash the youngster in Premier League in a move to save the pride of the hoops faithful. Townsend made amends soon, he became a threat with his direct running and methods. His dribbling made a mockery of opposition defence and he started to pump in goals for the bottom table side. His efforts were valiant and he soon established as their main threat.
Andros Townsend established himself as a dangerous weapon and a consistent outlet for QPR attacks, still the Londoners couldn’t keep their head above waters. Teams started to deploy double marking on the youngster to counter his threat, still he evolved as a better footballer to perform above the weight of his team. When Andros Townsend returned to Tottenham Hotspur, he wasn’t an unknown quantity anymore. His performances deserved a place in Spurs squad itself and he was looking forward to the opportunities at his parent club.
Harry Redknapp had played a huge role yet again in transforming the career of a player. Like Gareth Bale, he had toughened Andros Townsend as well. The man motivator has done a splendid job already, and with a tactician like Andre Villas Boas to guide Townsend can be expected to make the mark soon. He isn’t afraid of the big opponents or big challenges. The youngster was very eager to impress everyone at Spurs lodge when the new season approached.
Spurs started the new season after securing the signatures of some of the best players which included Confederation Cup hero – Paulinho. Even though their talisman Gareth Bale departed soon after, Daniel Levy and co. brought in some big money players to fill the void left by the Welsh wizard. The additions of Argentine youngster Erik Lamela and Belgium winger Nacer Chadli was mainly aimed at strengthening the wide areas of Spurs attack.
The departure of Gareth Bale and an injury to Aaron Lennon could have been a nightmare for Spurs fans. Last season when the duo was absent, Spurs form plummeted. The team lacked the width, pace and directness in their absence. Opposition defence were able to frustrate the Tottenham team by parking the bus, and Spurs lacked the cutting edge to break the stiff defences.
The additions of Lamela and Chadli was mainly intended to address the issue. Spurs think tank had plenty of options to choose from this season. The returning loanee Andros Townsend was also staking claims for playing time at White Hart Lane. The competition for places started to get the best out of Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, who is nowadays favourite for the left midfielder/winger role in Spurs first team. On the other hand, the right hand side is occupied by a 22-year-old Andros Townsend, who was almost an outcast few months back.
The speedy winger has risen from the ashes and is the best dribbler in Europe according to the statisticians. He is ahead of the likes Frank Ribery, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the top dribbler in Europe this season. He averages 5.5 dribbles per game and is almost difficult proposition for the opposition to handle when ball is at his feet. His ability to play with both the legs makes him unpredictable and he uses this trait very effectively as well.
His dribbling abilities has often resulted in carving out openings from open play. He posses a deadly left foot which can produce some thunderbolts to stun the goalkeepers. Playing on the right hand side of Spurs attacks has helped him to use it to a good effect.
Andros Townsed’s game has got some stick due to his shoot on sight policy which often resulted in goal kicks. His tendency to move inward from the touchline to take shots has become predictable to some extent. Often managers has instructed their defenders to double upon him to prevent him from unleashing those shots which are unstoppable if precise. This tight marking system has resulted in him losing the possession, and sometimes it paves way for a counter attack as well.
Andre Villas Boas and Spurs coaching team has also paid attention to it, and the latest developments in Andros Townsend’s game is a clear indication of it. Townsend is ready to take the defender on his outside and has started to deliver the crosses from by line. Roberto Soldado and Jermain Defoe aren’t the ideal strikers to take advantage of the crosses coming into the box and that is the reason why his name is not registered in the assists column this season. An inform target-man in the mould of Emmanuel Adebayor, might be able to capitalize on those deadly crosses which is surely going to make some managers loss their sleep.
Majority of people considers Andros Townsend as an inverted winger, but in reality he is slowly becoming a double threat with his unpredictability. He is comfortable cutting inside to unleash his left foot and is not afraid to go outside to deliver crosses with his right as well. If he can introduce more perfection in his wing play, defenders will become confused when Townsend is running at them with his directness and trickery.
Harry Redknapp compared him with Arjen Robben recently:

Andros Townsend has improved his overall game in many ways recently. He has now become more of a team player and is a good contributor in Tottenham’s build up play. He is always willing to play neat triangles with his team mates which is slowly becoming a trademark of AVB’s style of play at Spurs. Townsend’s passing has improved as a result and he now boasts of 87% passing success rate, which is very good for a winger.
Andros Townsend’s understanding and link-up with Kyle Walker on the right hand side is developing into a deadly combination for both Tottenham Hotspur and England. Both the players have shown willingness to help each other in their duties and this combination will be one to watch out for in future.
Gareth Bale evolved into a World Class player when he started to pump in goals from all sorts of positions. Especially his long shots provided a different dimension to his team’s attacking exploits. Similar to Gareth Bale, Townsend also posses the ability to take long shots. He isn’t a finished product by any means, but his goal for England against Montenegro might give a fair idea about his long distance abilities. It was carried out by his weaker right foot as well. If the coaching staff can fine tune his shooting technique and decision making, England winger might become unstoppable soon.
Weaker teams usually tends to sit back against Tottenham Hotspur, with a player possessing deadly long shot abilities as Townsend, Spurs might find a way past the parked buses in future. His decision making requires a lot of development and it is something which is expected to develop with time and experience.
A place in the World Cup squad for England is an attainable target for Andros Townsend by the way he is evolving in the big stage. Andros Townsend’s main competitor Theo Walcott hasn’t matured as expected over the years, so is Tottenham Hotspur Winger Aaron Lennon. The duo lacks consistency and hasn’t fulfilled their early promise till now, making the gate open for Townsend. The way his game is developing at the moment, he is sure to rack up some goals and assists in Premier League.
