As Arturo Vidalai??i??s spot kick hit the back of the net after beating Stefano Sorrentino in Palermo’s goal, Juventus captured their second consecutive Serie A title. This was also the second back-to-back Serie A title for Antonio Conte, his seventh if one considers the five he won as a player with Juventus. However, unlike the title win last year, the Old Lady was expected to lift the Scudetto this year so there was hardly the same amount of shock and awe that accompanied the triumph twelve months back. This was a successful season for Juventus and it was a step in the right direction for the Bianconeri in more than one way.
The Rise of Paul Pogba
The French starlet has burst onto the scene this season in a way few expected him to. Pogba transferred to Juventus after a somewhat bitter saga which involved his old club and super-agent Mino Raiola. 
As the season dawned to a close, Pogba had made strides few expected him to make this season. Most importantly, the youngster has won the faith of Conte quickly and the manager seems to have complete belief that the Frenchman is fully ready for the big stage. Indeed, Conte has used him in some big matches this season, including the ones against Shakhtar Donetsk and Bayern Munich in Champions League. Pogba has started an impressive 18 times in Serie A and scored 5 goals, including a brace against Udinese. Most interestingly, he is only the second player for whom Conte has decided to tweak his formation to accommodate him in the starting XI. The first one was Arturo Vidal. Conte used a 3-5-1-1 formation towards the end of the season so that Pogba could start in central midfield and he did justice to his coachai??i??s faith by being one of the most consistent Juventus players during the nine-match winning streak in March and April. In his age bracket, Pogba is the only players since Del Piero to have scored five goals for Juventus.
Incredible is the word that will best describe Pogbaai??i??s potential at his age. With the management showing enough faith in him he can very well become one of the best midfielders of his generation in future. Pogba is not a direct replacement to either of the starting Juventus midfielders but he brings in energy and his box-to-box movement is an asset when teams do the proverbial bus parking. Pogba has attempted 1037 passes in Serie A with an impressive 83% success rate and has shown some glimpses that he can be an alternative creative outlet to Pirlo. His aerial prowess and ability to hit booming long rangers are added assets to Juve attacks.
More Efficient, More Ruthless
A persistent problem last season was Juventus failing to win matches despite dominating possession. A multitude of reasons, including strikers failing to convert chances contributed to this pattern. This season, there was a change in that trend. Despite not creating a plethora of chances in a number of matches, Juventus squeezed out victories. The best example of such a performance was the match against Celtic in Glasgow when the home team dominated possession but Juve chiseled out a perfect 3-0 away win. It is vital that a team which sustains success wins even when it doesnai??i??t play to its full potential and Conteai??i??s Juventus has mastered this art in current season.
The above graph compares performance of Juventus in last 2 seasons. It is quite evident that the graph deviated more this season, especially in November, which was the worst month in Conteai??i??s reign. On the other hand, Juventus managed to earn full points in three months, compared to just once last season. The greatest part about Juveai??i??s form curve in 2012/13 is its consistently upward trend February onwards. After dropping very few points, it culminated in a long winning streak at the business end of the season and it ended only when the players relaxed a bit against Cagliari after putting the title beyond doubt. A definite sign of a champion team.
They may not have been as easy on the eye as last season but Conteai??i??s Juventus was more efficient and more ruthless in his second season.
Performance in Champions League
It has been quite a while since Juventus performed well in European competitions. The last Champions League campaign ended with a 4-1 humiliation against Bayern Munich in Turin, followed by a 4-1 loss against Fulham in Europa League. Juventus didnai??i??t suffer any losses in Europa League in the 2009/10 season but set a new and dull record of drawing six consecutive matches.
Antonio Conteai??i??s side found themselves in a tough group this season along with European champions Chelsea and Shaktar Donetsk and FC Nordjaelland, both champions of their own leagues. The Bianconeri looked down and out when they were 2-0 down against Chelsea in the opening match but clawed their way back to eke out a creditable 2-2 draw. Two more draws followed as ai???Drewventusai??? of last season made an appearance in Europe. Juve did bounce back magnificently, winning rest of the games and topping a group few expected them to.
Celtic, who had trumped Barcelona in group stages, was comprehensively defeated in the first knock-out round. In the quarter-final, though, Juventus was left clutching for thin air as Bayern Munich completely outplayed Conteai??i??s team in both legs. No team has dominated the Old Lady like Bayern did, since Conte took over. In hindsight, Bayern proved that they were a team on a different level, be it quality of players, experience at the top level or managerial factor. It was a learning experience for most of the Juventus team as well as Conte.
Despite the underwhelming exit, Juventus took giant strides in Europe this season. In the Abrahamovic era, no team had come back from 2-0 down at Stamford Bridge or inflicted a 3-0 loss to Chelsea in an away game ai??i?? Juventus did both. Same was the case with Shakhtar Donetsk, whose 100% win record in all competitions at home snapped against Juventus. Defeating Celtic 3-0 in Glasgow is also one of the most difficult tasks in European football, even Marcelo Lippiai??i??s Juventus failed to do it.
Juventus was second after Borussia Dortmund in terms of UEFA Coefficient points till quarter-final. They moved up a massive 23 places to reach the 20th position in UEFAai??i??s list. Improvement in coefficient points should also go on to ensure that they get easier groups in coming editions of Champions League.
The Financial Situation
The financial implications of UEFA Champions League became all too evident when Juventus released their financial statement recently.
Juventus enjoyed a year end revenue of ai??i??223.5 million, a whopping increase of 43.2% over last seasonai??i??s ai??i??151.2 million. The significant part of this money, ai??i??51.9 million, arrived due to the run to Champions League qualification and Juventus was further buoyed by the fact that Udinese were knocked out in qualifiers, meaning the money from TV rights was divided between Milan and Juventus, giving these clubs more.
Juventusai??i?? club statement drew an optimistic future for the club, revealing that it had made a profit of ai??i??13.8 million in first three quarters of the current financial year, a sharp change from last yearai??i??s scenario when the club made ai??i??53.4 million loss in the same period. ai???The forecast for the year 2012/13 is a loss but with a significant improvement over the previous yearai??? signed off the statement with optimism.
Indeed, things can only get better going forward, financially. The average attendance in the Juventus stadium rose slightly from last season and is likely to improve next season. The profile of the club, which took a significant beating after the events of 2006, has improved by leaps and bounds after their performance in Europe. Behemoths like Samsung have reportedly expressed an interest in buying the naming rights of the Juventus stadium.
The club is not likely to receive massive windfall, should the reported deal materialize but it is likely to open up avenues for future association with the Korean giants. In December, Juventus announced the acquisition of 180,000 square meters of area (along with 33,000 square meters of pavement area) around the Juventus stadium for a period of 99 years. This area will be used for the Continassa Project and will house a range of buildings from media center to hotels. Once this project finishes Juventus is likely to gain a windfall in terms of profit.
Backroom Staff
Perhaps never before in the clubai??i??s history has the importance of a strong backroom staff been emphasized like the current season. 
Alessioai??i??s ban ended before Conteai??i??s and he took over the mantle from Carrera.
Conte, Alessio and Carrera were all team-mates in Juventus in 1991/92 season under Giovanni Trapattoni and it is clearly evident that they share a strong bond. Along with these three, Fabio Paratici is another vital cog in Juveai??i??s managerial machinery. His eye for spotting young talents is already well appreciated in Italy and he has improved Juventusai??i?? scouting network significantly in past two years. Both Alessio and Paratici were reportedly wanted by other clubs, the former was linked to smaller clubs in Italy and the latter, a lucrative job with PSG. Both rejected their offers citing that they wanted to work with Conte. Liverpoolai??i??s legendary Boot Room crew proved decades ago that a stable back-room staff is invaluable for sustaining success, Juventus fans would be hoping the same happens with the current managerial team.
Overall, season 2012/13 was another step in the right direction and Juventus, looks set for a brighter future both on and off the field.
