Villarreal was a major force until last season. But, this season, nothing is going right at El Madrigal. Now, knowing that we aren’t going to find a lot on Villarreal, we decided to consult an expert on the matter. TheHardTackle interviewed Allen Dodson, manager of villarrealusa.com, which happens to be one of the most comprehensive weblogs on Villarreal on the internet. Q. Let’s get started on a personal note here. Why did you start supporting Villarreal?
When I saw them in the CL, I liked their style of play, the fact they were from a small town in an interesting part of Spain, and they had players like Forlan, Riquelme and Senna.
Q.Ai?? How much is Manuel Pellegrini responsible for Villarrealai??i??s success so far? His time at Villarreal caught the attention of many including Real Madrid. What magic wand did the Chilean possess?
A.Ai?? Pelle certainly was a great coach for us; he benefited from the team’s ability at the time to pick up players unwanted elsewhere and ‘cheap’ South American players.Ai?? And he was given enough time at Villarreal to produce results.
.Q.Ai?? But, Pellegrini did not win any silverware with Villarreal even though they were an excellent team. He could not do it with Real Madrid. Do you think he can achieve that with Malaga?
A. Well, winning a trophy depends on luck to some extent as well as skill, and Villarreal was never quite able to get ‘over the hump’ to a final.Ai?? I can understand Pellegrini wanting to go to Madrid–how do you turn them down?–but it wasn’t a good fit for him.Ai?? Villarreal doesn’t have the sort of boardroom dissension Madrid does, and it’s such a small club–you’re only in the media spotlight when you want to be.Ai?? At Madrid, you are always in the spotlight and that didn’t work for Pelle.
As to his future at Malaga, it depends on the degree to which the money actually flows there.Ai?? Take away Isco and Santi Cazorla and they are an average team at best.Ai??Ai?? I think there may be more going on behind the scenes at Malaga than we’re aware of (they continue to be late paying taxes on transfers, etc.), so whether that money gets spent this summer I don’t know.
Q.Ai?? Moving back to our original subject, letai??i??s cast an eye over at Villarrealai??i??s finances. Is Villarreal owned by the fans like Real Madrid and Barcelona or by the President?
A.Ai?? They’re owned by the President (and possibly his family too, I’m not sure exactly).Ai?? The Roig family is very involved in the management of the club as well.
Q.Ai?? How well are Villarreal equipped, financially? Would you be able to provide us with some figures to put things in perspective?
A. Ai?? It’s hard to provide a short answer to this.Ai?? Vila-real (the town) only has about 50,000 people, and our stadium holds 25,000.Ai?? Matchday revenues are very small compared to our main competitors, and commercial/sponsorship revenues are not large either, so we are quite dependent on TV money.Ai?? Excluding payments from European football competitions, we’re probably doing well to get ai??i??70-75 million in revenues.
President Roig’s goal is for the club to stand on its own financially–he’s put a lot of money into the club but can’t do it forever.Ai?? Last year we lost money even with the Europa League cash, this year the early Champions League exit hasn’t helped.Ai?? We’ve budget to break even this year, but attendances are down and we still don’t have a shirt sponsor, so it’ll be tight.
The larger question really is how anyone can compete with the big two in La Liga.Ai?? Valencia and Atletico want to build new American-style stadiums with hotels, shopping complexes, etc. attached to bring in more revenues.Ai?? That’s not something Villarreal can do.
Sr. Roig has been very active in developing contacts in China.Ai?? I can’t say that these have paid off yet in terms of cash for sponsorships, but clearly we’re looking to that market to help us generate revenue.Ai?? We have more followers by far on the Chinese Weibo network than any other La Liga team, for example.
Q.Ai?? In the last decade, El-Madrigal has witnessed special talents like Forlan, Riquelme, Senna and Cazorla gracing the field. Who, according to you, has been the most influential player for the club in that period?
A.Ai?? That’s a tough question–you can make an argument for each of them!
I’ll say Senna, because of his longevity.Ai?? When he retires, he will be very hard to replace.
Q.Ai?? From Champions League material last season to relegation contenders this season, what has gone wrong at the club?
A. Where do we start?Ai?? Everyone expected Barcelona to sign Rossi, and if they had made a decent offer he would have gone.Ai?? And I think the club had already figured that would happen.Ai?? When it didn’t, we spent the rest of the summer figuring out what to do next, and the roster was still unsettled even as the season started.Ai?? Then came the injuries.
Then there was the coaching issue.Ai?? Garrido was fine motivating young players, but his obsessive approach didn’t work well with veterans, especially once Cazorla and Capdevila, who could keep everyone loose and relieve the tension, were gone. And Garrido’s eye for talent was questionable, to say the least.Ai?? We certainly didn’t do a good job reinvesting the money from Santi’s sale.
Q.Ai?? How important was Santi Cazorla to this team? Was selling him, instead of Rossi, a bad move by the club?
A. Ai?? I think the basic problem was Villarreal never got a serious offer for Rossi that was anywhere near market value and/or had enough money upfront.Ai?? Barcelona could’ve had Rossi had they wanted, but they went for Alexis Sanchez instead.Ai?? In hindsight, we would have been better off selling Nilmar, but Roma didn’t get serious about him until the Santi deal was done.
I hated to see Santi leave, though.Ai?? On the pitch not only did he do the obvious things (score goals, assist others, win the ball back) but he also absorbed a lot of fouls, and I thought he and Borja worked very well together.Ai?? Without Santi, Borja has been hacked a lot this year.
And off the pitch, he and Joan Capdevila were the crazy duo that kept things from getting too serious, and when they both left it seemed the team’s ‘soul’ was lost.Ai?? I’m not sure Garrido and/or Roig really understood how much those departures would affect locker-room dynamics.
Q.Ai??Ai?? Jose Francisco Molina has come up coaching the youth teams at Villarreal. It is obvious that he will have an in-depth knowledge of the club and its players. Do you think he has what it takes to turn this season around for the Yellow Submarines?
A.Ai?? I think so, but I do worry that he’s learning on the job as far as tactics are concerned.Ai?? CaparrA?s certainly outcoached him last week. He is a calm hand, and on balance we’ve played better–quicker tempo and better pressing to win the ball back quickly– under Molina than Garrido, but we have some serious issues I’m not sure can be solved that quickly regardless of who is coaching.Ai??Ai?? Nilmar has been poor, Cani as well, which has put too much pressure on Borja to drive the offense forward, and Marco Ruben needs a second striker who can work with him.Ai?? And our defending, specifically set-piece defending, has been poor.
I would drop Cani and play HernA?n PAi??rez to give us some better width in our attack.Ai?? And while I think we have to play Nilmar to get his fitness and confidence back, we also need to look at Martinuccio who I really like and think could help us down the road.
Q.Ai??Ai?? They say, no matter who you support in Spain, it is an open secret that you support either Real Madrid or Barcelona. What about you? Does this dominance of the big two worry you?
A.Ai?? No, I don’t support either of the big two really.Ai?? Their dominance is killing the league. The last time another team finished in the top two was Villarreal in 2007-08, and it may be another 5+ years before it happens again–if ever.
Q.Ai?? How good is the youth system at Villarreal? Any interesting players to look forward to?
A. The youth system is good, but so far Bruno Soriano has been the only star who has come through it and really succeeded with us.Ai?? But the pipeline is getting full with guys who can at least add squad depth and help out, if not necessarily guys who can move right in to the starting lineup.
As far as players to look forward to, we have two good keepers: Juan Carlos (currently on loan to Elche) and Diego MariAi??o with our B team. If Diego LA?pez leaves this summer–Atleti has been interested on him in the past– those two might be with the first team next year.
We have some players at the B team level who might be a year or two away, but I especially like Pere Sastre (right back), Joselu and Moi Gomez (strikers) and Lucas Porcar (attacking midfielder).Ai?? Jaume Costa is a bit older than these guys, 23, but might get a chance to move up next year– he’s a left back and we need help there.
There are some other players with the B team now who have promise but haven’t yet shown consistency: Florian Lejeune, a French central defender for example.
And we loaned Jefferson Montero to Betis this year, so we have to decide on his future.Ai?? I’d like to see him part of our squad next year.
Q.Ai?? Finally, your prediction for Villarreal this season. Will the club avoid relegation and claim a European spot?
A. Ai??Will we avoid relegation? I think so, but this team has a fragile psyche, even though it’s much better under Molina. We seem to be unable to totally shake the clubs beneath us; if we had won last week, things would be a lot different.
If we could win our remaining games at home (except for Real Madrid)Ai?? we would have 47 points, even if we took nothing on the road.
The problem is we have some tough teams to play in El Madrigal (Malaga, Espanyol, Athletic, Atleti), but we do tend to play well at home.
Our road games are a lot easier (Sporting, Zaragoza, Real Sociedad, Betis for instance) but as we saw last week we often play down to the level of our opposition on the road.Ai?? Still, we should stay up, but I don’t see any way to qualify for Europe.Ai?? I think the game in Mallorca pretty much ended that dream.
Q. Assuming the team does stay up, do you expect Villarreal to sell one of its stars?
A. Realistically, I think we have to expect Rossi to move to Italy if a good offer comes in.Ai?? A lot depends on how he recovers from his knee injury.Ai?? If he can play well for us in the last month of the season, say, and play in the Euros, that offer probably will come.Ai?? If not, then I think we decide how much money we want to raise and what players we really need to keep and build around him.
Borja would be most in demand, but also the most valuable to us; Nilmar and/or Diego Lopez might be better candidates to move.Ai?? But we’ll see.Ai?? Summers are always a bit scary for us Submarine fans!
