“With great powers, comes great responsibilities” – as was aptly stated by Peter Parker in Spider-Man. But in Football, with great powers, comes the ability to misuse it.Ai?? From the power of being a renowned figure in Italy to the power of being a football fan in Romania, 2011 saw the best and worst of football – both on and off the pitch. TheHardTackle presents the top five controversies from last year.
Serie A – Atalanta Match-fixing
Italy has been no strangers to match-fixing and bribing with their history littered with numerous scandals. The fact that “The beautiful game” also has a dark side is nowhere more apparent than in the peninsula. Last year, the stink started when a probe was initiated against Atalanta and Udinese. Match-fixing reared its ugly head once again, but this time in Serie B. 3 Serie B clubs, 11 Pro League clubs and 2 amateur clubs were summoned in this case. It also included many “dignitaries” like Giuseppe Signori and Cristiano Doni, both very notable figures in Italy.

An irregular betting pattern around Atalanta’s match last season gave them away, as the newly-promoted club began their Serie A journey with a 7-point deduction. The worst hit was Atalanta’s captain, Cristiano Doni, who received a three and a half year ban for his involvement. His team-mate, Thomas Manfredini was also slapped a three year ban. Apart from these two, many other upcoming players were slapped heavy fines. Clubs found guilty were deducted points (14, in case of Benevento) while some others were slapped with heavy monetary fines (80,000 Euro, in case of Chievo).
But the worst was yet to come. And it came in the last month of the year, when as many as 17 people were arrested for their involvement in match-fixing. Cristiano Doni, who was earlier banned was not arrested among other players from Roma, Piacenza and Spezia. Doni later admitted guilty of the charges.
EPL – Suarez-Evra Racism Row
It all started with Manchester United’s trip to Anfield for their match against Liverpool on the 15th of October. An equally contested affair saw a 1-1 draw where Gerrard scored for the home side, whereas Hernandez equalized for United to spoil Liverpool’s day. To any football lover, the match would have ended there, but then we saw the amazing twist in the tale which left everyone with a bitter taste in their mouths.

Suarez was charged with making racial comments to Evra as many as 10 times in that match. As per the ruling, Suarez called Evra “negro“, which in Uruguay is not as offensive as it is in England. On 16th of November, 2011, the FA charged Suarez with misconduct due to his use ofAi?? “insulting words” towards Evra. The initial punishment was a 8-match ban and 40,000 Pound fine. Liverpool, however came out strongly in support of Suarez, even issuing a statement on their site.
Liverpool Football Club is very surprised and disappointed with the decision of the Football Association Commission to find Luis Suarez guilty of the charges against him. We look forward to the publication of the Commission’s Judgment. We will study the detailed reasons of the Commission once they become available, but reserve our right to appeal or take any other course of action we feel appropriate with regards to this situation.
Further to this, Liverpool players strongly came out in support of their be-leagued colleague, as they practiced in “Suarez 7” t-shirts ahead of the game against Wigan. Even though that gesture drew the ire of few prominent black footballers, Evra himself came out in his support, saying that Suarez is not a racist. The case is still open and according to recent developments, FA is suggesting that the ban could get extended should he appeal further.
UEFA vsAi??FC Sion
While most football fans have been focused on Europeai??i??s big leagues and the Champions League, the most significant thing happening in football this year might very well be the FC Sion vs UEFA dispute. A simple matter of deciding a place in the Europa League has now surpassed all boundaries and now threatens to change the footballing landscape as we know it.The present predicament has its root in 2008, when Sion was banned by FIFA for two transfer windows, as they reportedly “influenced” a player to abandon his present contract and sign for them.

Sion’s subsequent appeals were turned down, first by the Court of Arbitration for Sport and then by the Swiss Federal Court. Sion then wrote to FIFA, asking if they were eligible to sign players in the last transfer window and FIFA answered in the negative. Another round of appeals and rebuttals followed. Fully aware of this ban, Sion went ahead nonetheless, as they signed as many as 6 players. UEFA immediately issued a warning asking them not to be included in the Europa League squad. Sion ignored that and after defeating Celtic over two legs, rightfully qualified for the Group Stages.
In retaliation, UEFA removed Sion from the Europa League. One more round of appeals-and-rebuttals started, with CAS this time ruling that UEFA has been right in their course of action. Sion was fined 40,000 Swiss Francs and on top of that, were docked 36 points for fielding “ineligible players” in the League. UEFA has managed to squash FC Sion for now, but from the looks of it, this one is in for the long haul.
Ajax vs AZ Match
A Dutch Cup tie featuring Ajax and AZ was abandoned on December 22, due to one of the most bizarre and shocking moments from last year. AZ were down by a solitary goal when an Ajax fan ran into the pitch and “attacked” AZ keeper, Esteban Alvarado. Alvarado meted out his own version of punishment, literally kicking the life out of the fan. Due to his actions, he was shown the red by referee Bas Nijhuis. The official had this to say later –
I understand that Esteban was defending himself, but he walked to him (the supporter) and kicked him multiple times. He could also have walked away.
Following the red card, AZ coach Verbeek ordered his players off, saying that his players did not feel safe in such an environment. Ajax later apologized and insisted that the intruding fan be banned for life. Later the red card was overturned and now the match will be replayed behind closed doors.
Even though that match was abandoned, the intruder surely got to feel every bit of the sucker punch emanating from Alvarado’s boots. This is surely one ‘kicking’ tale to look back later.

A similar incident occurred in the match between Petrolul Ploiesti and Steaua Bucharest. An angry fan ran the length of the pitch to punch a player in the face, seemingly angry over a penalty decision. While defender George Galamez collapsed to the ground, his team mates came to his rescue, kicking the life out of the intruder. Two red cards followed due to their actions. The match was eventually abandoned after stand-in keeper was hit in the back by flares.

The Turkey Football Scandal
2011 will be forever etched in memory not for football but for the myriad match-fixing scandals that engulfed Turkish football. The rot started on June 29, when Mehmet Ali AydAi??nlar was elected President of the Turkish Football Federation. Within a week of his appointment, Prosecutor Mehmet Berk and his staff launched an all-out investigation into a rigging saga from last season, where FenerbahAi??e was crowned Champions.

Among the dignitaries who were detained were FenerbahAi??e Chairman Aziz Yildirim and several other FenerbahAi??e officials. Other prominent football figures includes former Turkey Football Federation Chairman Ai??zgener, Trabzonspor Chairman Sadri Azener, former Turkey Football Federation official Levent KAi??zAi??l and a host of others over match-fixing allegations. Former AnkaragA?cA? administrator MA?mtaz Karakaya and player Serdar Kulbilge were also detained.
As many as 93 suspects were unearthed. As a result of this, inspite of winning the Turkish Championship, FenerbahAi??e was withdrawn from this year’s UEFA Champions League by the orders of UEFA. This match-fixing scandal soon became the talk of the town and it immensely affected the national team’s fortunes, as they were knocked out of Euro 2012. The 2011-12 Turkish Season, which was supposed to commence on August 5, was postponed to September 11. The perception that the three big teams of Turkey – FenerbahAi??e, Galatasaray and Besiktas were “untouchable” was broken as a result of this murky scandal which engulfed the entire footballing community.
