Is it a hapless clutching of straws, affirmative-action style, or does it border on insularity and protectionism? Savio Medeira, coach of the Indian national football team, pinned the blame for Indiaai??i??s shoddy performance in the AFC Challenge Cup on the over-reliance of Indian clubs on their foreign strikers. On the face of it, the former Salgaocar player, raises a concerning point ai??i?? few of Indiaai??i??s clubs in the domestic league circuit can boast of homegrown talent up front. Consequently when it comes to an international fixture, the Indian national team is woefully short of strikers. But thatai??i??s hardly the point of contention.
Savio took things a step further, and many might say too far, by mooting a proposal to prohibit I-League clubs from featuring more than one striker of international origin. Will such a directive, if enacted, amount to nothing more than reserving a strikerai??i??s spot for ineffectual strikers who might otherwise have been rightfully consigned to the bench? Or will it offer Indian strikers a much-needed opportunity to ply their trade in tandem with the best international talents in the I-League?

From Goa where Joachim Abranches warms the benches for Dempo to Kolkata where Robin Singh has to wait for late second half substitutions to get a chance, the state of Indian strikers in I-League is very dismal. At a time when we speak of Joachim Abranches as one of the positives of the AFC Challenge the truth is that Abranches doesnai??i??t get to play for his club. The situation is even worse for Sushil Kumar who has failed to find an I-League club despite being in the National team for over 5 years now all because the I-League clubs have blind faiths in the foreign strikers who are rejects from their own nation and charge crore of rupees here.
Indians having one of the best goal-keeping squads in Asia can be attributed to the fact that goalkeepers in all the I-League clubs are Indians. The healthy competition has lead to the overall standard being improved. Hence if we ban the foreign strikers, the Indian strikers will get opportunity to play against the best defenders in the country and this will no doubt improve their standards and they will better suited to play for India in the international matches rather than looking clueless as is currently the situation.

Ban Foreigners from Local League, cut down number in All India Tournaments.
When the National Football League started only five foreigners played the first season. Not surprisingly only cases of Indians topping score charts ai??i?? Baichung and Raman Vijayan,Ai??were witnessedAi??in first two editions. The dependence of Indian clubs on foreigners for goals borders on ridiculous. And before giving examples like EPL or La Liga we should stop and think about the youth structure in these countries and that in India. Practically, it is impossible to ban a club from signing a foreigner for a particular position so the solution is to limit the number of foreigners in I-League and ban them completely in local leagues.
Clubs should not be allowed to field more than one foreigner at a time ai??i?? this way, Indian strikers will get more chances as clubs still play 4-4-2 mostly. Local leagues should be primarily used for grooming local, young players. It is undeniable that playing against foreigners can improve standards of Indian players but over-reliance on the same needs to end. Since the clubs have rarely shown inclination in developing players the only way is to force them to cut down on number of easy fix foreigners so that they concentrate on Indian players more.

The recent claims by Indian manager Savio Medeira over the increasing presence of foreign strikers has caused a lot of furor amongst the Indian football fans leaving them divided over this issue. Agreed that India failed to score even a single goal in the recently concluded AFC Challenge Cup, but the blame for the recent failure lies on the entire team especially the defense was in sixes and sevens and the midfield which got literally steam rolled in all the matches.Indiaended up conceding goals in the opening minutes not just 2012 Challenge Cup but also in the earlier warm up matches. Pointing fingers at the presence of foreign strikers for the teamai??i??s shambolic performance looks nothing more than hogwash. With several big players hanging up their boots over the past one year Indian football has come at a crossroad. Indian colts have some big boots to fill in with the departure of names like Bhutia, Gawli and Climax and that process will take its due course but the signs coming from the recent performance of teamIndiaare anything but promising. The primary reason behind this situation is AIFFai??i??s inability to provide world class infrastructure at the grassroots level and virtually non existent youth development programs of the clubs. Before pointing fingers at the presence of foreign strikers or at foreigners for that matter in the I-league, AIFF needs to do some serious introspection on their own behalf.
In fact, theAi??presence of foreigners gives an extra dimension to the league as it will help Indians to grow alongside players who they might end up facing in international fixtures. Also it was only in the later stages of the Bob Houghton era thatIndiaactually started playing considerable amount of international ties; before that it was only the presence of foreigners that chiefly gave Indians a chance to test themselves against outsiders before playing in any major tournament.

If we just turn back the pages, to the year when the National Football League was incepted (1996), that year, a so called Baichung Bhutia scored fourteen (14) goals and rallied his club (JCT) to a maiden league title. India had someone new, someone not from Goa or Kolkata, to share the throne with the legendary IM Vijayan. Thatai??i??s what NFL had served on the plate for its faithful viewers at that time, a shrewd and very intelligent striker. Years have gone by, and NFL got transformed into I-League, a new media-centric venture. But one trend which people failed to capture and analyse (till Mr. Savio pointed out in the post match conference against DPR Korea, which is the only positive thing many would take out from the entire tournament) that I-league clubs are short of Indian Strikers.
In the current season, Sandesh Gadkari is the top Indian striker with mere seven goalsAi??while Ranti Martins is leading the chart with staggering twenty one. The 10-11 season saw Jeje, who has been cited as the next big shot striker in the Indian football scene, finish with thirteen goals, whereas Ranti finished with thirty. One simple question to the readers – A boy, at a young budding age, watching a big I league match, and dreaming to become a striker one day, at this moment of the time has very few people to idolize and look up to. I-League needs to serve more of Bhutiaai??i??s and Vijayanai??i??s , and dilute the depressing fact of ratio of goals scored by foreigners to home grown strikers. Savio might be going out, but he has hit the nail on the head.

Savioai??i??s claim that foreign strikers should be banned from the I-League is a totally ridiculous statement. There seems to be no thought process behind that statement. Next season I could sign Ranti Martins as a defender- play him for ten minutes at centre back and then thrust him forward citing ai???change of tacticsai???. Will the referee haul him behind as soon as he crosses the centre line?
Savioai??i??s statement literally means that if India had a good striker we would have fared better in the AFC Challenge Cup. Well then let’s hand Savio Medeira the luxury of Lionel Messi for one whole game. Will it guarantee that India will win? From where will the supply to Messi come? From a defensive Syed Rahim Nabi? Or from an atrocious Adil Khan? The statement made by Savio would be that he needs equally good midfielders and defenders, which brings us to the real point.
All over the world national teams have been successful due to a strong youth development policy. Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have almost half their sides packed with foreigners, yet the German National team is one of the strongest in the world. Banning foreigners is not the solution to the problem. Having world class infrastructure with modern coaching methods is the way to go about and sadly Savio Medeira doesnai??i??t have the guts to point a finger at the AIFF and ask them what they were doing all these years when they should have got funds and built at least four world class academies in India.
When Danish FC Midtjylland coaches came to India they observed that at the age of 12 years, Indian kids and their European counterparts were almost on the same level technically. However when the age reached 18-19 years there was a vast gulf in the technical ability. They inferred that from the age of 12-18, European kids undergo far more training than the Indian kids- thatai??i??s why they were technically superior. This underlines the fact that India lacks the basic infrastructure and the coaches to coach the abundant talent that India had. What India needs to do is notAi??ban foreigners but improve facilities, coach the coaches and have a strong youth development programme. Iai??i??m afraid Savio has got it terribly wrong and is trying to save his job by making these ludicrous statements.
