December marked the end of a very successful year for Portuguese football. The league has been steadily improving its quality, the Portuguese National Team has qualified for yet another international tournament and the Portuguese clubs have been doing very well in Europe, giving Portugal a realistic chance of soon overtaking Italy in the UEFA rankings and take fourth place.
In December, matchdays 12 and 13 of the league were played, as were the quarter-finals of the Cup and the first game of the League Cup, while the four sides remaining in Europe got to know their opponent in the first knockout stage of their respective competition.
The following is a summary of everything thatai??i??s happened in Portuguese football during the past month.
The Portuguese League
Each team played only two matches since the previous edition of the Portuguese Diary, but some important differences were made in those games, namely at the top. Ai??Winter champions FC Porto won their two games, 2-1 at Beira-Mar and 2-0 at home against Maritimo; despite two pretty strong performances, Porto only secured both victories in the final minutes, mostly due to their wastefulness in front of goal. Still, the defending champions are the leaders at the turn of the year.
Benfica also won their two games, 1-0 at Maritimo with a late goal and 5-1 at home against Rio Ave, and they have the same points as Porto, although with an inferior goal difference. Both Porto and Benfica remain undefeated, both with 10 wins and only three draws. Porto havenai??i??t lost a league since March 2010, theyai??i??re currently on 53-match unbeaten streak.
Sporting, on the other hand, have lost ground in this past month. The Lisbon outfit started with a 1-0 home win over Nacional, but failed to beat a very organized AcadAi??mica side in Coimbra. Despite attacking until the very last moment, Sporting couldnai??i??t do better than a 1-1 draw and theyai??i??re now 6 points behind the leaders. In the next league game, Sporting will host Porto in a game that is absolutely crucial for the Lisbon outfitai??i??s title hopes.
Braga have taken advantage of Sportingai??i??s slip and are now just two points behind the Lisbon giants, after beating PaAi??os de Ferreira at home 5-2 and Olhanense away 4-3, in what will go down as one of the games of the season in the Portuguese league, with great football and full of twists and turns.
As expected, Maritimo were unable to maintain their early form against the leagueai??i??s top teams and lost to both Benfica and Porto, although they put up a good fight in both games and only lost in the final 10 minutes. They lost their fourth place to Braga but are still comfortably in 5th place, five points clear of AcadAi??mica.
At the bottom, the biggest winner has been Feirense, who racked up four points upping their tally to 14, two clear of relegation. Most teams got either 2 or 3 points, while VitA?ria de GuimarA?es saw their November progress halted with lackluster performances and only one point in December, and PaAi??os de Ferreira have cemented their last position with two defeats with an overall score of 2-8 and now look a serious candidate to get relegated.
The league remains very balanced, with only six points separating sixth place AcadAi??mica from 15th place Rio Ave, a balance that is likely to be maintained until the end of the league, with very little separating the teams below the top.
January promises to be a very important month for the league, with Sporting hosting Porto and Braga. A defeat against Porto would almost destroy Sportingai??i??s title hopes, while a win will make the league even more exciting.

Portuguese Cup

The last games of the year in Portugal were the quarter-finals of the Portuguese Cup. After a disappointing 1-1 draw in the league against AcadAi??mica, Sporting bounced back with a 3-0 home win against Maritimo and advanced to the semifinals. AcadAi??mica also advanced with a 3-2 home win over Desportivo das Aves from the second division. Nacional beat Moreirense on penalties and Oliveirense upset Olhanense 2-1, and they will be the only team from the second division to feature in the semifinals.
The semifinals draw was announced a few days ago. Favorites Sporting will play against Nacional, with the first leg at home on January 8 and the return leg on February 11. AcadAi??mica will host Oliveirense in January and decide everything on the road in February. Sporting and AcadAi??mica are the clear favorites to make the final, but the Cup has always been rich in surprises. This Cup is a golden chance for Sporting to put an end to their on-going three year title drought, with all the other big clubs already eliminated.
Portuguese League Cup
After some rounds involving the lesser sides, weai??i??re now in the group stages of the League Cup, with the top sides entering the competition. Only one game has already been played, with Porto winning 2-1 at PaAi??os de Ferreira in group D. All the remaining games will be played in January. All groups have 4 teams, with the two highest rated teams playing two home games and one away from home and the two lowest rated teams playing two games away from home and one at home. The winner of each group will advance to the semifinals. The groups are as follows:
Group A ai??i?? Sporting, Rio Ave, Gil Vicente, Moreirense
Group B ai??i?? Benfica, VitA?ria de GuimarA?es, Maritimo, Santa Clara
Group C ai??i?? Braga, Nacional, Portimonense and Penafiel
Group D ai??i?? Porto, PaAi??os de Ferreira, VitA?ria de Setubal and Estoril
All the games will be played in January. Ai??The two best group winners will be seeded and have home advantage in the (one-legged) semifinals. VitA?ria de SetA?bal won the first edition of the League Cup in 2008, with Benfica winning the last three.
Portuguese Teams in Europe

Since the previous edition of the Portuguese Diary, only Sporting and Braga played in Europe, in the last round of their respective Europa League groups. Sporting fielded a reserve side against Lazio and lost 2-0 in Rome, but they had the first place in their group completely secured prior to the last day. Braga, on the other hand, needed a win in Belgium against Brugge to win their group but they were down to 10 men in the first 15 minutes and couldnai??i??t do better than a 1-1 draw, thus finishing in second place.
On December 16, all the Portuguese teams got to know their next European opponents in the first knockout round of their respective competition. In the Champions League, Benfica will face Zenit, in what can be considered a pretty good draw. Itai??i??s true that Zenit upset Porto in the group stages, but in theory Benfica should have more than enough quality to beat the Russian side over two legs and advance to the quarter-finals. The first leg will be played in Russia on February 15 and the second leg in Lisbon on March 6.
In the Europa League, Braga were drawn against Besiktas, not exactly an easy draw but not one of the most difficult either, at least on paper. The first leg will be in Portugal on February 14 and the return leg in Turkey on February 22. Braga will undoubtedly face a very tricky first knockout round opponent in their quest to make another run to the final. Should Braga make it past Besiktas, their next opponent will be the winner of the tie contested between Lazio and AtlAi??tico Madrid.
Defending Europa League champions FC Porto were drawn against Premier League leaders Manchester City, surely one of the most difficult opponents possible. Porto have much more experience at this level and have every chance to advance, especially considering that theyai??i??ve improved a lot since the beginning of the season, but City are a fearsome opponent and will provide a very stern test to Portoai??i??s title defence. The first leg will be in Portugal on February 16 and the return fixture in Manchester on February 22.
Finally, Sporting were handed a relatively easy draw and will face Legia Warsaw, first in Poland on February 16 and then in Lisbon on February 23. Sporting are naturally huge favorites to reach the last 16. If they do eliminate Legia, their next opponent will be the winner of the Porto vs City tie, meaning that we could have another all-Portuguese tie in Europe, should Porto and Sporting both beat their opponents in this round.
In short, Benfica and Sporting were handed relatively easy draws (on paper) and should progress to the next round, Braga will face a tough, yet very beatable, Besiktas, while Porto have the hardest task as they will face the current Premier League leaders. It seems certain that there will be Portuguese teams left in Europe after this first round, the only question is how many. We must wait until February to find out.
Player of the Month in Portugal: Hulk (FC Porto)

Hulk retains the award (he also won in November) after another great month. He has kept on carrying Porto on his back, scoring, assisting and creating most of Portoai??i??s offensive moves. If he keeps playing like this, it will be hard for Porto to hold on to him for much longer.
