Napoli have so far performed well in Europa League as well as Serie A. The Azzuri fans are hoping for another successful season after the club won Coppa Italia lastAi??season. The club that came back to Serie A in 2007 after nearly a decade in lower league hell, has made an impact and is now once again considered one of Italian football’s greats.
They might not just be on the level they were at in the late 1980’s when Maradona, Careca, Giordano, Ferrara, and Zola rocked the city on the foothills of Mount Vesuvius, but this generation of Cavani, Hamsik, Maggio, Cannavaro, and De Sanctis has brought consistent top positions back to the city founded by the Greek around 4000 years ago. Napoli, one of the best and most passionately supported teams in Italy has once again clawed their way into the top half and is expected to be one of the prime candidates to challenge Juventus this season.
The B-side’s European success
With a few top positions however, come demands of increased consistency to achieve top positions every season. Having already got the taste of Champions League knock-out rounds, the fans are no longer satisfied with a fifth spot and Europa League football, an unloved competition in the peninsula. They demand Champions League qualification and it is just that that the club is fighting for at the moment. Along with that the club has been subjected to the sad consequence of missing out on a podium finish last season and thus dropped into the much maligned Europa League.
The Europa League no longer has to glory of 1990s when Serie A sides dominated the competition like never before. No it just a sad cousin of Champions League where most clubs send experimental sides. No one likes this cousin, but you go to his birthday anyway. He is your cousin after all, so you cannot really stay away, but you cannot manage to really bring your heart either. In Napoli’s case it means that a genuine B-team has been fielded, complete with reserve goalie Antonio Rosati. Encouragingly for the club, this party has turned out to be surprisingly pleasant despite a few overcooked dishes here and there.
With otherwise marginal players like Rosati, Dossena, Aronica, Vargas, and even the vague Marco Donadel shining, Napoli has succeeded in going through to the knock-out round. And that with one match still to play. While they didnai??i??t always dominate their matches the B team did successfully get the results when they were needed most. They were placed in a tricky Group F which contained in form Ukrainian outfit Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, Dutch powerhouse PSV and Swedish side AIK. Despite losing in both second and third matchdays, Napoli qualified from the group as runner-up. They did have to call up Edinson Cavani for some of the crunch games though. The Uruguayan duly delivered scoring 6 out of their 11 goals, including a four goal haul against Dnipro at the San Paolo. Despite Cavaniai??i??s heroics the reserves did deliver the goods when needed with Eduardo Vargasai??i?? hat-trick against AIK in second match-day deserving special mention.
Back to Serie A
In Serie A things are also still looking bright for the Partenopei. They started out in awesome fashion and while the likes of Inter, Milan, Fiorentina, and Roma were stuttering, Napoli looked like the only rival to Juventus in the race for the championship. In the last months things have turned somewhat back to normal as Inter have regained their shape, the new Fiorentina stars have started to gel, and Napoli have found it hard to keep going at the same pace. They lost to Juventus at home and lost form temporarily after that game. They dropped points against Atalanta and Torino. Two weeks back some hapless defending from Milan saw them race to a 2-0 lead at home but the Rossoneri fought back to gain a draw at San Paolo. This means that Napoli have dropped to fourth spot in the league table. However, a good run of form in past 2 weeks has seen them rise to second place, just two points behind Juventus.
Couple of seasons ago a fourth spot would be celebration worthy stuff for Serie A clubs but the situation has changed now. The loss of a Champions League spot paired with the growing ambition of the Napoli fans mean that anything less than a fight for the Scudetto is seen as a let-down. The league is still very close in the top but realistically Napoli are more likely to challenge for the Champions League slots rather than fight Juventus tooth and nail for the title. Looking at the squads and current form of Inter and Fiorentina no one can expect Napoli to have an easy passage to top-3 either.
Despite recent hiccups hopes are still high among the light blue supporters, and rightly so. Apart from a high profile but inconsequential match against already eliminated PSV Eindhoven (Gianluca Grava to play, anyone?) in Europa League there are no more European games before spring. The team can concentrate on Serie A and look to make up for all the points they have lost in past few rounds. Napoliai??i??s matches in coming rounds of Serie A can go on to decide where they will finish come the end of the season, which is something to look forward for fans and neutrals alike.
