Few nights back, reports came out of Spain that the Head of Referees in Spain (Sanchez Arminio) had this to say about Gerard Piqueai??i??s claims in the media that his red card was premeditated: ai???Pique saying his red was premeditated is very bad. Weai??i??ll lodge a complaint to the federation.ai??? Indeed, Senor Arminio has seen fit to talk about players having respect for referees and there are claims that Gerard Pique will be sued or at the very least, punished.
Let’s briefly go through the events of the Barcelona ai??i?? Sporting Gijon match. Gerard Pique was given a harsh red for a foul. In the argument that ensued and, moreover, in the post match interview Pique was quoted as saying that he had informed the referee during half time that the push on Seydou Keita was a foul and hence a penalty (and it was). Pique claims that because he told the referee about this incident, that the official took it personally and that the red card could have been premeditated (in fact, Pique supposedly said half premeditated and not premeditated, for those of you into details).
There are some details of course, besides this particular incident. For instance, this is the same referee that denied Barcelona two clear penalties against Valencia and, in this particular game, Barcelona were again denied 3 penalties. In the Sporting Gijon game, there were three very obvious and blatant fouls in the box that Ai??would make it extremely difficult to consider the officials in Spain as competent in any way. Velasco Carballo, is considered one of Spainai??i??s top referees. How is that even possible?
- Dani Alves was bundled off the ball, the defender made absolutely no attempt at getting the ball and instead used his arm from slight behind Alves to foul the player. Indeed, if Piqueai??i??s foul was a red card, then this particular foul had to be a penalty.
- Seydou Keita when jumping for a corner, was clearly pushed from behind and fell over. Penalty and itai??i??s hard to call it any other way.
- The worst of it all, depending on which camera angle you choose, a Gijon defender on the floor (in his box) using his hand to push the ball away. One camera shows it as him handling it only once, another camera shows as twice. Nonetheless, it seems the referees have literally turned a blind eye to all of it.
It is the sheer hypocrisy of it all, of course. The referees in Spain want respect? Velasco Carballo is the ai???top refereeai??? who will be officiating at the Euro 12ai??i??. In the Gijon match, he produced 12 cards (combined between the two teams) and the only reason we can use to justify it is that he had some kind of nervous twitch in his hand.
Then comes the sheer incompetence of the RFEF. The countryai??i??s football association plans to take up the request of the head of referees about suing Gerard Pique. Keep in mind, that what Pique said after the game is wrong, there is no other way about it. However, if you have been following football since at least Mourinhoai??i??s advent, you will know that thanks to the Special One, in Spain anything goes.
Jose Mourinho has poked eyes, Sergio Ramos has complained about referees (even on twitter) and ai???Saintai??? Iker has told the referees to ai???go dance with them(Barca)ai??? after another loss to Barcelona hinting at the fact that the referees are in collusion with the Catalans. Of course, that isnai??i??t disrespectful. No, maybe it has something to do with the Saint and his aura around most parts of Spain (minus the Catalan and Basque region). What excuse does Sergio Ramos or Jose have? Unlike Iker, Ramos and Joseai??i?? reputations precede them. How did they not get punished for the large number of infractions?
This season, more so than ever, has shownAi?? that officials in Spain are at the very least, incompetent and, at worst, corrupt or blatantly biased. What other excuse could there really be for the fact that the person who will have to judge a complaint against Gerard Pique is a 85-year-old ex-member of Real Madrid (Alfredo Florez)? If flat-out conspiracy theories are not your thing, then how about a huge conflict of interests?
If Spainai??i??s Calciopoli is too harsh a term to explain the events over the season, then how about an extremely huge drop in the quality of referees in Spain. In fact, after incidents occurring from one week to the next (without fail) even neutral observers are beginning to wonder whatai??i??s going on. In general, writers would try to avoid this subject simply because of how controversial it is. However, the noise being made by everybody every week is getting louder and there are even certain articles around the internet where the league table is recalculated if the referees had not suffered so badly from ai???human error syndromeai???.
This season, Real Madrid have got more penalties than any team in any of the top 5 leagues in Europe. In La Liga, they got 1/5th of all penalties given, in a league of 20 teams, that is quite a number. Considering what defenders Pepe and Sergio Ramos are like, the statistic that is even more surprising is that Madrid have not conceded a single penalty all season. Barcelona, on the other hand have also had a couple of favorable calls. For instance, against Atletico Madrid an offside was called against Columbian striker Falcao when it was not but the sheer number of bad calls that Barca have got this season far outnumbers the favourable decisions. Some of the penalties that Barcelona have been denied is also quite shocking.

From having perfectly good goals being disallowed for non-existent off sides to clear penalties being denied. Nonetheless, in the end it is extremely important to keep in mind that Pep Guardiola and most of the players have for the best part stuck to the ai???we donai??i??t want to talk about refereesai??? or ai???they have a tough job as it isai??? quotes to the media. Gerard Pique, though, did not and he made a mistake (a big one) by saying what he did. Punishment would have been fine if it didnai??i??t seem like Spain had double standards though. How can it be that Pepe can continue to stomp on players hands and ankles (check Rayo Vallecano vs Real Madrid), Ramos with his elbows and yet, Mourinho can get away with complaining about referees and somehow ,no punishment?
The general standard of referees in Spain have to be improved drastically and by next season. If not, talk of a European Super League (with the same standards for all teams) and Spanish Calciopoli will only get louder. The longer the incompetence goes on, the more difficult it will get for people to ignore that for some reason Spainai??i??s referees seem to always get it wrong. Ai??Maybe Gerard Piqueai??i??s biggest mistake was not that he said what he did bt that he said it to the media? Maybe Pique should have waited and caught the referee in the parking lot? It has to be said, Barcelona do not deserve to win the league this season considering that their form has not been good but punishing Gerard Pique for his quotes is so hypocritical that it leaves one in shock.
Finally, Spain need to find some way to make their FA transparent and improve the referees because ai???human errorai??? will only be acceptable for so long. The worldai??i??s best league, for many football fans, is great as far as the technical skills and talents of players are concerned but falls miles short of the high(er) standards that other leagues have. The RFEF is beginning to look like an organisation run by incompetent people in a backward nation, not like a league that has the worlds best players in it, should be run.
