Real Madrid set the tone for the weekend by dispatching Racing Santander 4-0 in what seemed like a rather comfortable match for the capital side. Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Angel Di Maria found the back of the net to take their team to a 13 point lead over Barcelona (who played on the next night). The big change in the table occurred over the weekend when Athletic Bilbao under Marcelo Bielsa showed their class in the 2nd half to score 3 goals against Malaga to move up to 4th in the table. The Basque side is now in the Championai??i??s League spot and will be more than happy if they stay there for the rest of the season. Bielsaai??i??s side have surprised many with their drastic improvement this season. Iker Muniain showed his class and caused Malaga numerous problems throughout the whole match.
Levante are now 7th in the table after losing at home to Rayo Vallecano which turned out to be a great game. The minnows of Spanish football lost 3-5 to newcomers Rayo in an explosive match.
Although Villarreal got thrashed by Mallorca 4-0 in what is fast becoming a rivalry in Spanish football, they remain a spot above relegation after Racing lost to Madrid. The Yellow Submarines are now 3 points above the relegation spot. Mallorca got their revenge over Villarreal and now find themselves 13th in the table.
