Round 27 of Serie A began with Napoli hosting Cagliari at the San Paolo. Keeping the all-important Championsai??i?? League match at Stamford Bridge on mind Mazzarri rested Maggio and Edinson Cavani from starting line-up. Their absence didnai??i??t seem to affect the Azzuris who ran riot in front of the home fans and opened up a 3-0 lead in no time. Introduction of Cavani in second half made Napoli all the more dangerous as they finished the match with a 6-3 victory. With this win, Napoli move closer to the Champions League spot, a prospect that seemed improbable few months back. This was their 5th consecutive win in Serie A and made more impressive by the fact that Maggio, Hamsik, Cavani and Lavezzi, four of their most crucial players were not together on the field at any given point of the match. Cagliari meanwhile sink closer to relegation zone. In Fridayai??i??s other match, Internazionale ended their 9 match winless streak with a labored 2-0 victory over Chievo in Verona. Saturdayai??i??s only match saw AS Roma travel to the Renzo Barbera to take on Palermo. A beautiful assist from Erik Lamela saw Fabio Borini put the Romans ahead early in the game. Palermo responded well in front of their home crowd resulting in an exciting match-up. Roma hung on to three very important points in the end and moved closer to European places.
Sunday saw business as usual at the San Siro where AC Milan curved out a 2-0 win over basement boys Lecce without much fuss. Zalatan Ibrahimovicai??i??s 19th goal of the season makes him clear favourites to finish as the top scorer this year. With eleven games to go the Swede can also match the much coveted 30 goal figure with a little luck.
Business was also as usual at the Luigi Ferraris where Juventus managed to draw yet another match, their 14th of the season, one more than the number of wins. Juventus failed to break down the worst defence in Serie A despite a much improved performance from last two matches. Antonio Conteai??i??s team has won just one match since February and should be worried more about the chasing pack rather than challenging Milan.
Some respite came for Juve as both Lazio and Udinese slumped to losses on late Sunday kick offs. A win would have seen Lazio close the gap on Juve to just two points but instead they lost 3-1 at the Olimpico against a brilliant Bologna side. Currently placed 9th, Bologna are looking towards their best Serie A finish in years. Injuries have robbed Udinese off their form in last few months. The Friulianis had lost just one match till November but have lost six times in 2012 and look in danger of missing out from Championsai??i?? League. Novara, on the other hand, may not survive the drop this year but have notched up some memorable wins including this triumph.
Catania continued to impress and push for a European place with a gritty home win over Fiorentina. Another important result on Sunday saw Siena grab three invaluable points after a 2-0 away win over Cesena. Siena leapfrogged teams like Parma and Fiorentina after this win.
