Southampton fans and a large proportion of other fans would probably admit that the selection wasnai??i??t all that surprising. Rickie Lambert has had a fantastic season to date netting 25 goals in all competitions. Heai??i??s followed on from 2 strong seasons in League one where he scored 57 goals for Southampton.
A number of people wondered whether he would be able to make the step up from League one to Championship; heai??i??d not played above League one level his entire career. This appears to have been only because he hadnai??i??t had the opportunity, and not through a lack of talent.
Rickie began his career as a footballer at Blackpool in 1998, but only remained with The Tangerines for 2 years having made only a handful of appearances.Ai?? He spent the next 7 years plying his trade at Macclesfield, Stockport County and Rochdale amassing 57 goals in all competitions. But it was with Bristol Rovers that Lambert really began to light up the football league. 59 goals in under 3 years with the team had made him an extremely valuable asset as well as a cult hero.
Southampton were relegated from the Championship at the end of the 2008/09 season at which point they were teetering on the brink of collapse, following their parent company going into administration. They were saved by Markus Liebherr who invested heavily into the club. This meant that at the start of the 2009/10 season, the Saints had a bit of money to throw around by League 1 standards. It was clear that Southampton wanted to make their time in the league short lived. They shelled out on some big names, one of which was, Rickie Lambert.
Then manager, Alan Pardew, paid A?1M for Rickie, who became a saint on 10th August 2009. His appointment was met with excitement by the Southampton faithful. He knew how League 1 worked and heai??i??d excelled during the previous season at Bristol Rovers. His first season in a Southampton shirt yielded 36 goals with the team narrowly missing out on promotion. Arguably his best game of the season came at MK Dons away.The Liverpudlian scored a second half hat-trick, the last goal of which was a superb 35 yard lob.
His second season at Saints was equally fruitful with the forward netting 21 goals as he was frequently partnered up front by ex-Southend striker, Lee Barnard. The strike partnership was extremely effective and along with other sterling performances throughout the team, Southampton were promoted back to the Championship.
Rickieai??i??s success at championship level has been impressive to say the least. He has scored three hat-tricks to date, the latest coming away at Watford. Heai??i??s a player at the top of his game and well and truly in form. Football league pundit, Steve Claridge was full of praise during the Football League Show on the day of the win at Watford. He commented that Lambertsai??i?? second goal was especially good due to the difficulty of the shot.
Adam Lallana, often a catalyst for Saints attacks, played a quick ball along the floor from left to right; Lambert let the ball come across his body and struck it with his right foot. The ball rifled into the bottom left hand corner of the goal. Claridge noted that to the untrained eye, the goal appeared to be a fairly simple one, but in actual fact it was one of the hardest in football. And that is what he does best: making the harder things look simple.
If a ball is delivered to him in the right area and thereai??i??s a good chance that heai??i??ll test the keeper. He has great positional awareness, an eye for goal, fantastic free-kick ability, Matthew Le Tissier style and a humility that makes him loved by the fans.
Southampton FC currently sit atop the Championship. If youai??i??d have said at the end of last season, to the St Maryai??i??s faithful that they be in this position with 10 games remaining, theyai??i??d have laughed at you. Now, football is a team game, it involves everyone from backroom staff, coaches and players in all positions, but there really have been some key players for the team this season. Rickie Lambert is one of the them. His consistency in front of goal is what managers look for in a striker. Its also extremely apparent when he isnai??i??t playing. In games where Rickie has been absent, through injury in December and suspension in January the team seemed slightly lost. It was almost as if the other players are aware of his status as much as the fans.
But can Lambert go beyond the Championship? When Alan Pardew took over at Newcastle, there were rumours that he was planning to take Lambert up to the Premiership with him. This was before this award winning season and scintillating form. Plenty of people questioned whether he could cut it at Championship level; heai??i??s proved those people wrong. He has the weapons in his arsenal to threaten any defence whether they are League one or Premiership quality.
Norwich achieved back to back promotions with their cult hero, Grant Holt. Holt has proven that he can challenge the Premierships defences; whoai??i??s to say that Lambert canai??i??t do the same? Itai??i??s a question that Southampton fans donai??i??t mind asking themselves.
They hope that they can achieve the promotion theyai??i??re striving for and that their award winning striker will help them do it. But there’s always that fear lingering about – will Southampton be able to keep Lambert, especially with top Premier League clubs desperate to boost scoring charts?
