Portuguese Diary ai??i?? January Edition: Benfica Open Up Five Point Gap At The Top, Sporting Start The Year Disastrously

January was a month with a lot action in Portuguese football. Four league matchdays were played, as well as all three matchdays of the League Cup group stages and the Cup semifinals, in a month that began to really shape up all three major competitions in Portuguese Football.

The Portuguese National Team didnai??i??t see any action this month, though, nor did the Portuguese clubs in European competitions, which are set to resume next week with the first round of the knockout stages.

The following is a summary of everything thatai??i??s happened in Portuguese football over the past month.

The Winter Market

Just like everywhere else, there was a lot of action during the winter transfer window in Portugal. It is obviously impossible to list all deals, so weai??i??ll focus just on the most notables ones, namely the ones involving the top clubs.

FC Porto loaned Freddy Guarin to Inter and Fernando Belluschi to Genoa, two players who were rumoured to be unhappy at Porto, while they brought back Lucho Gonzalez (from Marseille) ai??i?? a player who had won four leagues with Porto in his previous stint and been one of the best players in the Portuguese League at the time ai??i?? and Marc Janko from Twente, a 28-year-old striker who is expected to boost Portoai??i??s forward depth.

Sporting signed XandA?o (a young center back) from SA?o Paulo and Ribas (a 23-year-old striker) on loan from Genoa, and they recalled Renato Neto, a young midfielder who graduated in Sportingai??i??s academy and was on loan at Club Brugge. After his antics in the game against Moreirense in the League Cup (see video), Valeri Bojinov was sent on loan to Lecce.

Benfica released Cesar Peixoto (who signed for Gil Vicente) and loaned Ruben Amorin (who was reported to be at odds with manager Jorge Jesus) to Braga. They only made one signing, but it was quite possibly the most controversial move of the transfer window in Portugal. Yannick DjalA? had been sold by Sporting to Nice back in the last day of the summer transfer window, but the transfer wasnai??i??t registered on time and he couldnai??i??t play until January. He was now signed by Benfica on a free transfer, in a move that angered a lot of Sporting supporters.

These were the most relevant moves of the winter transfer window in Portugal. A more complete summary of the transfer across the league can be found here.

Portuguese League

There were four matchdays during the past month and the biggest winners have definitely been Benfica, who won all their four matches and opened up a five point gap at the top. The Lisbon outfit remains undefeated and, with 14 wins and 3 draws in 17 games.

Porto started the month with a 0-0 draw at Sporting, in a very tight match that could have gone either way, and ended with a shocking 3-1 defeat at Gil Vicente, a result that put an end to Portoai??i??s impressive 55 league games undefeated, the biggest streak ever in the Portuguese League. This result might have seriously compromised Portoai??i??s chances of defending their title. 5 points isnai??i??t that big a gap, but it might be very difficult to overcome given Benficaai??i??s great consistency. Hulkai??i??s absence from Portoai??i??s match at Gil Vicente (due to a small injury) revealed just how much Porto need their star forward in order to win.

Sporting were definitely the biggest losers of the month. After drawing 0-0 at home with Porto, they lost 2-1 at Braga and tied 0-0 at Olhanense. They did beat Beira-Mar 2-0 at home, but still only managed 5 points out 12. Sporting are now 13 points behind Benfica, which means that theyai??i??re completely out of the title race, and theyai??i??ve also lost their third place to Braga. Reclaiming that third place, thus securing a place in next seasonai??i??s Champions League preliminary rounds, is now Sportingai??i??s main goal in the league. The absence of Ricky Van Wolfsinkel (injured at the beginning of the month) proved too big an obstacle for Sporting to overcome, as the remaining forwards couldnai??i??t step up and score goals. With the Dutch forward and Rinaudo back, things are bound to improve for Sporting.

Braga had a perfect month, being the only team apart from Benfica to win all their four games. They remain eight points behind Benfica, but now have a five point advantage over Sporting in the quest for the last Champions League spot. Leonardo Jardim seems to be continuining the great work of now Sporting manager Domingos PaciA?ncia, and Braga remain a rising club in Portuguese football.

MarAi??timo have kept their fifth place (despite a home defeat against Braga) comfortably, now with a 6 point cushion and look favorites to qualify to the Europa League next season, even after selling their star striker Baba to Sevilla for around 4.5 milion.

The 6th place is now occupied by the resurgent VitA?ria de GuimarA?es, who had a brilliant month with three wins and only one defeat (away against Porto); Rui VitA?riaai??i??s side are finally playing to their potential and will look to improve even further in the coming months.

PaAi??os de Ferreira have also improved greatly under Henrique Calisto. They were isolated in the last place at the end of December, but they are now one point above the relegation zone, after collecting seven points during the past month, almost as many as they had collected until December (8). In contrast, Beira-Mar looked relatively safe last month, but after four straight defeats, they are only two points above the relegation zone.

The struggle to avoid relegation continues as fiercely as ever, with only seven points separating last place VitA?ria de SetA?bal (who had a dire month, collecting only one point) and Olhanense in 7th place, a scenario very similar to last monthai??i??s. Who will survive and who will get relegated, itai??i??s anybodyai??i??s guess.

The Portuguese Cup

The semifinals of the Portuguese Cup were played during this past month, with Sporting and AcadAi??mica advancing to the final, which will be played in May.

AcadAi??mica saw off Oliveirense with a 1-0 win in the first leg at home and a 2-2 draw in the second leg on the road. AcadAi??mica showed that theyai??i??re clearly superior, but they still struggled a lot in the second leg, with Oliveirense making the most of their chances to go 1-0 and 2-1 up. But in the end AcadAi??micaai??i??s evident superiority prevailed and the winners of the first edition of the Portuguese Cup back in the 50s are through to the final.

Logic also prevailed in the other semifinal tie, with Sporting eliminating Nacional. It wasnai??i??t easy though; Nacional saw themselves 2-0 up at half-time in the first leg at Alvalade and only after Nacionalai??i??s Marcio Madeira got sent off did Sporting manage to fight back and equalize in the last minute of added time. Still, Nacional only needed a 0-0 draw at home to qualify; but led by Rinaldo, making his first appearance after three months sidelined (due to injury), Sporting got a difficult, yet deserved, 3-1 win. Sporting opened the score with a fabulous goal from Rinaldo himself from outside the box and, once again, Nacional got a player, Rondon this time, sent off in the second half. The Islanders still managed to equalize through Diego Barcelos, but Ricky Van Wolfsinkel (also starting his first match after injury) and JoA?o Pereira sent Sporting to the Cup final, giving the Lisbon giants a chance to put an end to their trophy drought.

The Cup will now only resume in May, with Sporting and AcadAi??mica playing the final in the National Stadium.

Domingos PaciA?ncia might be the man to put an end to Sporting's title drought

League Cup

The League Cup semifinals were decided a few days ago, with the winners of the four groups advancing. Both semifinals will be played on March 21, with Benfica hosting Porto and the surprising Gil Vicente hosting Braga. The semi-finals will be played in only one leg, with the winner of each match advancing to the final.

Group A (Sporting, Gil Vicente, Rio Ave, Moreirense)

Sporting were huge favorites to win this group and advance to the semifinals, but they disappointed greatly and finished last in the group, with two draws in their first two matches away at Rio Ave 1-1 and also 1-1 at home against Moreirense (with the Bojinov incident in the last minute denying Sporting the win), and a final day 1-0 home defeat against Gil Vicente, in a game where a win would have been enough to win the group and advance.

Rio Ave also managed only two draws, against Sporting and Gil Vicente, while Moreirense beat Rio Ave, tied against Sporting and lost to Gil Vicente.

Gil Vicente started by beating Moreirense at home and then draw at Rio Ave. In the last day, they needed a win at Sporting to advance and they did so, with ClA?udio scoring from the penalty spot. It is the first time that the Northern club has advanced to the semis of Ai??a Cup competition in their history.

Group A Final Standings:

1-Gil Vicente ai??i?? 7 points

2-Moreirense ai??i?? 4 points

3-Rio Ave ai??i?? 2 points

4-Sporting ai??i?? 2 points

Group B (Benfica, MarAi??timo, VitA?ria de GuimarA?es and Santa Clara)

Benfica and Maritimo won their first two games easily (Benfica 4-1 at GuimarA?es and 2-0 at home against Santa Clara; MarAi??timo 2-0 at home vs Santa Clara and 2-0 at GuimarA?es) and decided everything in the last match, with Benfica having home advantage. MarAi??timo had eliminated Benfica from the Cup back in November, but they couldnai??i??t repeat the feat this time. Benfica won 3-0, with youngsters Nelson Oliveira and Rodrigo shining and Yannick DjalA? making his debut, and they secured their place in the semis of a competition that they have won three times in four editions so far.

Final Standings:

1-Benfica ai??i?? 9 points

2-MarAi??timo ai??i?? 6 points

3-Santa Clara ai??i?? 3 points

4-VitA?ria de GuimarA?es ai??i?? 0 points

Group C (Braga, Nacional, Portimonense and Penafiel)

Braga easily secured qualification with three wins, 2-1 at Nacional, 2-0 at home against Penafiel and 1-0 at home against Portimonense. They went into the last match with qualification already secured. Nacional finished second, five points behind Braga, while Penafiel ended with 3 points and Portimonense with just one.

Final Standings:

1-Braga ai??i?? 9 points

2-Nacional ai??i?? 4 points

3-Penafiel ai??i?? 3 points

4-Portimonense ai??i?? 1 point

Group D (Porto, PaAi??os de Ferreira, VitA?ria de SetA?bal and Estoril)

Lucho Gonzalez's return has boosted Porto's hopes in all competitions

Porto also advanced in relatively easy fashion, beating second place PaAi??os de Ferreira 2-1 away from home in the first game. Straightforward home wins against Estoril (1-0) and VitA?ria de SetA?bal (2-0) confirmed qualification. The game against SetA?bal marked Lucho Gonzalezai??i??s return, with the Argentine getting a beautiful goal from outside the box to celebrate the occasion.

Final Standings:

1-FC Porto ai??i?? 9 points

2-PaAi??os de Ferreira ai??i?? 6 points

3-VitA?ria de SetA?bal ai??i?? 3 points

4-Estoril ai??i?? 0 points

Player of the Month in Portugal

Oscar Cardozo (Benfica)

Oscar Cardozo had a fantastic month, showing a very rich goalscoring vein in all competitions, becoming the top scorer in the Portuguese League with 13 goals. The Paraguayan striker was vital in many of Benficaai??i??s victories this month. He is the player of the month in Portugal.

Don’t miss next month’s edition of the Portuguese Diary to find out how the league is evolving and how the Portuguese clubs will begin their campaigns in the knockout stages of their respective European competitions.
