Transfer rumor mill rolls on as Ai??Liverpool are reportedly linked with a January move for Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, according to reports in the Daily Star.
Huntelaar has entered the last year of his current contract at the German club. Talks of a contract extension have seemingly hit a road block and the Dutch international has postponed contract talks to December. In January, Huntelaar will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with any club if Schalke fails to extend his contract by then.
A host of European clubs, including Arsenal and Tottenham, have already been linked with a move for the prolific striker but Liverpool have now made the Dutchman their high priority target in January.
The English club is in desperate need of a striker and manager Brendan Rodgers has made it clear in a recent interview.

At the moment, Luis Suarez and Borini are the only senior strikers in the Liverpool squad and after Borini picked up an injury while on international duty, Liverpool were left short in numbers upfront. Huntelaar will certainly be a great addition to the Liverpool squad as the Dutch international has an outstanding goal scoring record. Last season, he exhibited a blistering form for Schalke, scoring 44 goals in 47 appearances (in all competition).
Liverpool will face tough competition from Arsenal and Tottenham this winter if Huntelaar decides to leave. The fact that Liverpool are without Champions League football this season might come as a deterrent. But if Brendan Rodgers can pair Huntelaar with his former Ajax strike partner Luis Suarez, they will possess one of the best pair of strikers in the league.
However, Looking at FSG’s policy of investing into the youth and their reluctance towards the signing of Clint Dempsey from Fulham in the summer, the move looks unlikely to go through. Even though Brendan Rodgers might fancy the Dutch Ace, the owners may not be willing to pay over the odds in order to get Huntelaar on the Liverpool roster.
