Needing a point to seal the Ligue 1 Championship, Montpellier didnai??i??t need a cracking performance at relegated Auxerre. Nonetheless, they were treated to a cracking performance – but of an entirely different kind – by the home crowd. Incensed by their teamai??i??s relegation to Ligue2 the home crowd indulged themselves in mischief and hooliganism by throwing tennis balls and toilet papers on to the ground at half time. In fact, the sheer volume of the aforementioned ai???filthai??? on the ground, forced the match officials to delay the resumption of the game by 20 minutes. If this was not enough, they started throwing fire bombs on to the pitch. The officials had had enough. The stewards swung into action and the game was completed in front of evacuating stands.
But nothing could stop Montpellier from claiming the title they thoroughly deserved. They had overcome every obstacle thrown at them through the entire course of the season. They had shown the tenacity and ability to handle pressure as the possibility of winning the title became more and more real. Who, after all, could have predicted that they would end up winning the championship. This was a team ranked 14th in the league last year. This was a team with the 14th highest or the 7th lowest wage bill in the league. This was a team that was 80/1 to win the championship.

Montpellier have defied the odds and the economics. They spent 2 million pounds on players this season; the runners-up PSG spent 100 million. Javier Pastore, poster boy of Ligue1 and PSG, cost the Parisians A?37 million; more than Montpellierai??i??s annual budget of A?29m million. But this was team that had ai???performersai??i??. They had the meanest defense in the league. They had the best striker in the league-Oliver Giroud, the golden boot winner with 21 goals. They had the best young player in the league-Younes Belahanda. They also the best defender in the league-Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa. In short, they had the right ingredients.
But this team is about more than individuals. If ever, anything epitomized why they won the league, look no further than the final game. They came from a goal behind to record a well-deserved 2-1 victory. But the goals did not come from Oliver Giroud. Younes Belahanda was suspended. Remy Cabella, the young, exciting midfielder had a mixed game. The goals came from Nigerian striker John Utaka, one of the many unheralded stars of the team. As is the characteristic of winning teams, someone or the other put his hands up when the situation demanded. When Giroud suffered a slight dip in form after the winter break, Belahanda took over the goal scoring responsibility as he kept the team atop. When Belahanda was suspended, Remy Cabella filled in his big shoes with remarkable ease. These are some of the threads that went into making them champions.
Whilst the players shone on the field, the support staff must also get the plaudits. Rene Girard, put together a team which not only knew how to win games but also played some beautiful football in the process. Girardai??i??s ai???ugly ducklingsai???-his own words-played the kind of sumptuous football that was nowhere near ugly. He said after his team won the league, “I think our triumph is a real shot in the arm for French football.It just goes to show that everyone can beat everyone and that money isn’t the be-all and end-all. We’re a club of mates, a club that brings young players through and gives them a chance. At the end of the day, it’s worked out well for us. Girardai??i??s steadfast refusal that his team was not in contention for the championship worked wonders as the players seemed to play without any pressure weighing on their shoulders. Credit also must be given to their feisty, colourful and driven owner Louis Nicollin. From diffusing the flames of discontent in the team after Younes Belahanda accused Giroud of shirking responsibility in the 2-2 draw at home against Evian to asking the media to give him a blow job if his team won the title, there is never a dull moment with Nicollin around. He also stood by his word that he would get a mohawk haircut if his team won the title. Montpellier were clearly the deserved winners, the fifth in the last 5 years-Lille, Marseille, Bordeaux and Lyon won in 2011,2010,2009 and 2008 respectively.
PSG, bankrolled by the petro dollars of Qatar, finished runners-up, as their eventful season came to an end with a 2-1 win at Lorient. When Carlo Ancelotti took over the reins from Antoine Kombouare, the Parisians were 3 points ahead of Montpellier in the top spot. While some sections of the French media have been quick to harp on this and paint the season as a failure, they have achieved their primary aim of securing Champions League for the next season. Ancelotti, tinkered with his formation since he took over, often playing a 4-3-3 with no designated strikers and also deploying a 4-2-3-1 with mixed success.
Ironically, their best performers this season were two of their lesser glamorous players. Brazilian Nene- the combined top scorer in the league with 21 goals-was their most consistent performer as he scored important goals regularly. Jeremy Menez, signed from Roma, was another star performer, running the midfield and becoming an important cog in their wheel. Javier Pastore, was maddeningly inconsistent sparkling only in spells and needs to produce more to justify his exorbitant ai??i??40 million price tag. The jury is still out on winter signings including Alex, Thiago Motta etc. The general impression on PSG is that, though they may have missed out this season, with more players expected to come in-the likes of Higuain, Lavezzi and Pato are being bandied about-they may have taken their first steps towards establishing a football dynasty. With the experienced Ancelotti at the helm of affairs, they may be well be the dark horses in the next Champions League campaign.
