Football is more about money than loyalty these days. Spiraling wages, greedy agents scheming their next move and the Bosman ruling have tipped the balance in favour of the players. Contracts are more about salary raises and less about future commitments.
This is not to paint a depressing picture, but to confront an evolving reality. Now, more than ever, teams have to possess a strong youth structure and develop and promote players from within the club. The Premier Leagueai??i??s homegrown quota is another reason for clubs to embrace a solid and sustainable academy project.
Manchester United, along with Ajax and West Ham, is one of the frontrunners in managing a successful youth academy. David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, the Neville Brothers and Nicky Butt among many others, provide the perfect examples of young players coming through the ranks and making a mark on the clubai??i??s history. A successfully enforced youth setup goes a long way in creating a core of loyal players and saving on future transfer fees.
Youth Team Structure
Manchester Unitedai??i??s academy is based at the clubai??i??s top-of-the-line Trafford Training Centre, a sprawling 70-acre site in Carrington, Manchester. More commonly known as Carrington, the Trafford Training Centre (TTC) has 14 football pitches of varying sizes and doubles up as a home away from home for the clubai??i??s youth teams.

Players of various age groups train at Carrington, starting from the Under-9ai??i??s to the Under-18ai??i??s. Competition is stiff, and only the best are retained each year. The Youth teams are carefully constructed, with provisions for outstanding players to jump age groups and find their true level.
Players who work their way up to the U-16ai??i??s and U-18ai??i??s are eligible for playing in the Premier Academy League (PAL) and the FA Youth Cup. As the name suggests, the PAL comprises of academy teams of Premier League clubs as well as a few Football League clubs.
FA Youth Cup
The FA Youth Cup is the most coveted tournament of Youth football in England and Man United is the competitionai??i??s most successful team, having won the cup 10 times since its inception in 1952-53.
The likes of Gary Neville, Giggs, Beckham and Butt were part of the 1992 FA Youth Cup triumph. Along with Paul Scholes and Phil Neville, this group was given the moniker of ai???The Class of 1992ai???.
DID YOU KNOW: In the inaugural FA Youth Cup in 1953, a Manchester United side comprising of Duncan Edwards and the other ‘Busby Babes’ hammered non-League side Nantwich 23-0 in the Second Round – still a record.
Reserves
Academy playersai??i?? good performances are rewarded with a promotion to the Reserves side. Reserves are sometimes seen training with the First Team squad, to hasten their growth and above all else, learn from the pros. Budding academy players are often picked for season-ending Reserves games to give them a taste of the action, although itai??i??s common for certain players to play for both Academy and Reserve sides.
The Man United Reserves take part in the North section of the Premier Reserve League and compete with reserve sides of Premier League clubs. The Reserves compete for 5 trophies in a calendar year, in order to prepare them for life in the top rung of football.
Coaching Staff
Itai??i??s all good having the right youngsters at your club, but it is equally important for them to be learning from the right people. Manchester United has, over the years, retained some of its successful players in coaching positions to ensure that the philosophy of the club rubs on to the youngsters.

Brian ai???Choccyai??? McClair, Ole Gunner Solskjaer and Mike Phelan are among those ex-United pros that have been retained for the knowledge of the game and work ethic that they displayed during their time at the club as players.
Current First Team Coach Rene Meulensteen was brought on-board in 2001 as Technical Skills Director. His main responsibility was to work on the technical aspects of academy players and improve their ball-keeping and close control skills. His work with the academy players was noticed by the higher-ups and soon he was seen working with Reserves and First Team players. His is just one example of the right people being identified to work with youngsters and following that, being moved on to a more important role.
Loan Moves and Feeder Clubs
Loan moves are litmus tests for aspiring professionals and many fail to make the grade and are cast aside. Once again, only the best survive and make it to the first team. Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley are the latest examples of players making the most of loan moves and forcing their way into the first team squad.
Feeder clubs are a vital component of any clubai??i??s youth setup, as it allows the parent club to loan out youngsters for first-team experience and resolve work permit issues.
Royal Antwerp of Belgium is a notable feeder club for Manchester United and a perfect example of why the affiliation has taken place. Belgium has more relaxed work-permit laws and so when United was unable to obtain a work permit for Chinese striker Dong Fangzhou, he was loaned out to Royal Antwerp. Johnny Evans also had a loan spell at Royal Antwerp in 2006 before being loaned out to then Championship team Sunderland.
Manchester United recently signed 17-year old attacking midfielder Lucas Evangelista from Desportivo Brasil, another one of their feeder clubs.

Mats Moeller Daehli (17, Midfielder)
Hailing from Oslo, this young Norwegian joined United in July 2011 and is already being tipped by United insiders to make the cut. A central midfielder by trade, Daehli starred in a recent United-Bolton Uai??i??18 fixture. Sir Alex Ferguson was in the stands that day, and he must have been pleased with the potential on display. Daehli picked up the prestigious Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award this season and also earned a call-up to the Reserves side.
Gyliano van Velzen (18, Winger)
An alumnus of the prestigious Ajax academy, Van Velzen joined United in late 2010 and hasnai??i??t looked out of place. Having represented Holland at the U-15, U-16 and U-17 levels, the quality is there for everyone to see. Mainly a left-winger but also capable of playing upfront, this tall, quick-footed wide player had a stellar 2011/12 campaign which culminated into 3 appearances for Warren Joyceai??i??s Reserves. Van Velzen is expected to be promoted to the Reserve team next season, so we will be sure to hear more of him.
Adnan Januzaj (17, Midfielder)
United won the race to sign this highly-rated Anderlecht midfielder in July 2011 and Januzaj hasnai??i??t disappointed. His composure and technical skills belie his age and he was head and shoulders above his peers in a 4-0 dismantling of Torquay for the U-18ai??i??s. A naturally attacking midfielder, Januzaj showed his versatility by playing in a deeper role against Torquay and controlling the midfield. A serious injury brought his season to an abrupt end, but much is expected of this Brussels-born teenager in the 2012/13 campaign.
Tyler Blackett (18, Defender)
Itai??i??s only fair that a list of Manchester United Academy prospects includes a Mancunian. Blackett, who has been with the club for 10 years, is a tall and powerful defender capable of playing across the back four. He has already represented England at youth level and made the most appearances for the Reserves in 2011/12. His powerful free-kick against Swansea on the way to winning the FA Youth Cup in 2011 is another aspect of his game that is sure to earn him a spot with the reserves at the start of next season.
Jack Barmby (18, Winger)
London-born Jack Barmby is the son of former England and Liverpool player Nick Barmby. A constant presence on the left flank for the U-18ai??i??s, Barmby finished the 2011/12 campaign as the top scorer with 13 goals and also achieved the impressive feat of scoring in every match of the FA Youth Cup. Quick, intelligent and with plenty of tricks to bamboozle opponents, Barmby is expected to see out his final year with Paul McGuinnessai??i?? U-18ai??i??s and make the step up to the reserves.
