West Brom travel to Old Trafford to face champions Manchester United in a match that promises to be a tasty affair given the free flowing nature of football practiced by the two sides. Roy Hodson has continued the philosophy of good football started by now Chelsea manager Di Matteo and will no doubt take notice of how Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic Bilbao dominated United in midweek by deploying a fearless free-flowing passing game. The Baggies will also take heart from the fact that they were the only team to take points off United at Old Trafford last season and Hodgson will be hoping much the same from his team on Sunday.
However, it won’t be easy as they face a wounded United team who were humbled and humiliated by Bilbao on Thursday. With progress to the next round in EuropeAi??seemingly out of reach, Sir Alex and his team will be determined to retain their Premier League crown – their only realistic chance of silverware this season.Ai??After two undeserving away victories against Norwich and Spurs, the manager will demand a much better performance from his team during the run-in in order to keep the pressure on Man City who have a relatively tough fixture list.
West Brom, on the other hand, come into this game winning three games on the bounce scoring 10 goals in the process. The last of those wins was a 1-0 home win against Chelsea last weekend that spelled doom for their manager Villas-Boas. But more than the victory itself, the manager would have been very proud of the performance of his boys who dominated the game from start to finish and if anything, were unlucky to win by just a solitary goal.
The reverse fixture between these two sides was on the opening weekend of the season where United scraped to a 2-1 win at the Hawthorns when Steven Reid’s late own goal separated the two sides.
Team News and Tactical Brief
Manchester United
Chris Smalling is a major doubt for the game after his stitches reopened in the game against Bilbao. Antonio Valencia will also miss the game as he is due to return to training on Monday. However, the good news for United is that midfielder Tom Cleverley might make the bench on Sunday if he is passed fit. The rest of the players are fit including those who finished the Europa League game, while Vidic and Fletcher are long-term absentees.
Scholes should return to the starting line-up after being rested on Thursday. Also, Carrick – only a substitute against Bilbao – will be back in the first eleven alongside Scholes as both will be looking to control the game from central midfield. Carrick will primarily be protecting the back four while the 37 year-old will be looking to get forward on every opportunity as he did against Norwich at Carrow Road. The midfielders will be flanked by Young and Nani who was also used as a sub in midweek. Ryan Giggs is expected to be on the bench after playing for 75 minutes in midweek.
Rio Ferdinand will also return for the home side after sitting out the Bilbao game. He will be partnered by Jonny Evans in what has been a solid partnership at the back for the champions. The Anglo-Irish pair was brilliant at White Hart Lane as they deprived the dominant Spurs off any clear cut chances on goal. They will be supported by Patrice Evra as left-back while Jones and Rafael will fight it out for the other full-back slot.
Up-front it will be the usual pairing of Rooney and Welbeck with the teenager leading the line and the ex-Evertonian playing a free role, building up the attacks for United.

Roy Hodgson has a few injury problems to worry about in this game. Steven Reid and Zoltan Gera are definitely out, while Jerome Thomas is a major doubt as the winger is struggling with a hamstring injury. However, defender Billy Jones – who has been out for a few weeks – might be fit in time to take Reid’s place which will be welcomed by the manager.
The English manager has been using a 4-3-3 formation successfully in recent weeks and is likely to go with the same tactics once again. The trio ofAi??Keith Andrews, Youssouf Mulumbu and James Morrison has been in brilliant form as they have controlled the midfield in the past few games with some slick passing and excellent ball retention.
They have been well supported upfront as well by Fortune, Odemwingie and Thomas. However, the injury to Thomas will force Hodgson into a change with fit again Chris Brunt being the most likely replacement.Ai??Fortune has done a brilliant job for the Baggies upfront and has also helped Odemwingie regain his form as the Nigerian has scored five goals in his last three games.
The defence has also been performing very well for Hodgson with McAuley and Olsson forming a formidable central defensive partnership. Ridgewell will be the left-back making constant overlapping runs to help out the attack while Tamas is likely to be the right-back in place of Reid. However, the Romanian international is much a more defensive minded full-back than Reid and hence, is expected to be more inside his own half than causing trouble to United’s defence.
