Manchester United – Luis Nani Fiasco, Using Kagawa & Waterproofing The Defense

With December drawing to a close and the Christmas spirit in the air, ai???tis indeed the season to be jollyai??i??. Ai??Hitherto, this season, the Red Devils have had enough reasons to celebrate – top of the league, through to the knockout rounds of the European Cup and victories against all major rivals in Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool to boot. One can hardly find any reasons to complain whatsoever.

Nevertheless, resting on laurels and past glories has never been the norm at Old Trafford, at least not under the Scotsmanai??i??s stewardship. Ferguson has drilled and instilled a mentality to achieve excellence among the members of the squad and consequently fans too demand high levels of performances weak in, weak out.

This festive season, the United fan base has some aspirations budding in their hearts, a wish list of sorts which would quench the thirst of everyone around the Theatre of Dreams. A shout out to Santa to consider the plea, after all it is that time of the year.

Resolution of the Luis Nani Fiasco

One way or the other, the deadlock must end and soon. Nani has been on the periphery of the first team so far and his involvement would be needed sometime during this grueling campaign. Sir Alex has reverted back to the use of wide players, after a brief flirtation with a midfield diamond, and it seems to be paying rich dividends. Ashley Young and Tony V have fared admirably so far, nonetheless, Nani can force his way into the team if he gets his act together. The Portuguese winger brings those rare match wining qualities and his genius might prove pivotal in a closely fought title race.

Carlos Tevezai??i??s return last season egged City on to the chequered flag, a resolution to the Nani fiasco could yet prove to be the distinguishing factor in the final reckoning. Man United would do well to secure the future of a player who at his best is a match winner par excellence, but at what cost remains to be seen.

An injury free run in the team for Anderson

The nearly man of Old Trafford has yet again suffered a setback due to injury and this time just when he was finally beginning to come into his own and showcase his talent. Anderson, during his limited game time this season, has looked to be the one exceptional player in Unitedai??i??s beleaguered midfield and was just about beginning to repay his managerai??i??s patience and trust. The curse of injuries returned to haunt Anderson at a crucial juncture and he has been sidelined yet again.

Old Trafford awaits the return of the Brazilian maestro with bated breath and hopefully a sustained and an injury free run in the side as well. Every knock andAi??re-occurrenceAi??of a niggle is met with a sense of dAi??jAi??-vu at United, sadly it just never seems to fit for the much loved Ando.

Using Kagawa to his potential

The forward line at the club has done the manager proud so far this season, Rooney, RVP, Chicharito have all raised their game when the need be and United have scored goals a plenty. However, the exciting summer signing Kagawa hasnai??i??t been in the thick of the action just as yet. The Japanese has been out of action for close to two months and his return is now imminent and inevitable.Ai?? Now Sir Alex faces the dilemma of integrating the former Dortmund man into the team without disturbing the balance of his side. Ideally, Kagawa would occupy the same position that Rooney currently favours, ergo the million dollar question would be how to use the trio of Rooney, Kagawa and Van Persie all together in the same line up?

Exciting possibilities arise if Kagawa could flourish in a deeper role partnered with a Carrick or would the Japanese play role from out wide drifting into the middle ala David Silva for Man City. One can nevertheless trust Fergie to find the right combination, hopefully very soon.

Waterproofing the leaking defense

Stating that United have conceded cheap goals this season would be the understatement of the year. It would also be stating the obvious. But the reasons for the same should be examined and eliminated before they turn to calamitous. Firstly the manager would do well to give a sustained and incessant run to one of the two goalkeepers, and that must surely be the Spaniard David De Gea. DDG has been solid and largely error free this season and is definitely a better out and out shot stopper than Anders Lindegaard. Also, De Gea looks a bit more secure with his handling of balls in the six yard box and has shown a willingness to iron out the deficiencies ailing his game. Lindegaard at best has been average and hence must be the Spaniardai??i??s deputy.

Now, with the goalkeeping department sorted Ferguson must focus his attention on rotating his center backs in a way that the all four of Vidic, Ferdinand, Smalling and Evans remain fresh but importantly Sir Alex must decide on his first choice center back pairing for the monumental occasions. The return of Nemanja Vidic will surely calm a few nerves and things at the back will no doubt improve.Ai??The full-backs especially Rafael has had a stellar season and along with Robin Van Persie, the Brazilian has been Unitedai??i??s most consistent performers. Evra too has seen his form rise but the Frenchman could still get better.

Most importantly United can defend much better as a unit, often the side does well for the first few minutes of the game but then the energy tends to wane off. Pressing is one of the most important aspects of defending and often a much neglected one. Hopefully the turn of the year would see Man United set the record straight and defend the goal line like their life depended on it.

The Red Devils have given more than what any fan would have hoped for at the start of the season, but there is never an end to desire. And with the wily old Scot at the helm, they have a right to do so as well. May he grant these wishes as well as he has done for so many years. Amen.
