Manchester United: Ashley Youngai??i??s Debut Season ai??i?? The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Ever since Ashley Young made the switch from Villa Park to Old Trafford, all eyes have been on the Englishman to see if he had it in him to make the grade at the Theatre of Dreams. Many believed Young was at his level at Aston Villa, the proverbial big fish in a small pound. But when United come calling itai??i??s hard to turn down such a life changing opportunity. Young didnai??i??t as Sir Alex shelled out close to A?16 million to capture the winger.

Experts believed that the Red Devils had paid over the top as Young was in his last year of contract. Furthermore, adding another winger to the roster, when there were more pressing concerns elsewhere, made it a rather surprising move in general. Did United really need Young and how will he displace the likes of Valencia and Nani as the first choice wingers for the Red Devils? For what’s it worth, such questions didnai??i??t seem out of place whatsoever and must have emerged in the mind of every United fan.

Itai??i??s fair to say the signing of Ashley Young didnai??i??t really set the pulses racing. It was acknowledged as a signing that improved the squad rather than the first team. A season has passed and the winger made his presence felt in more ways than one – some of it admirable, some not so.

Ashley Young ai??i?? The World Beater

Young began his United stint in a blaze of glory, with match winning performances against West Bromwich Albion and Arsenal. United fans could hardly believe what they saw as Young found the top gear almost instantly. The game against Wengerai??i??s Gunners was the zenith, as United demolished the hapless North London outfit 8-2. Ai??Young scored a memorable brace as Fergieai??i??s side destroyed all comers early on in the season.

Another outstanding feature of the Englishmanai??i??s game was his delivery from crosses, whipping them in from his right foot to the far corner. Even when his form floundered, Young was able to come up with delightful crosses which resulted in goals – Ryan Giggs’ late winner at Norwich a case in point. Also, Youngai??i??s proficiency in front of goal must have pleased United fans to bits. Another splendid brace in a tough away encounter at White Hart Lane earned United three vital points and kept them in the title hunt. Young ended the season with a tally of 8 goals and all of them memorable for a reason or the other.

Largely deployed on the left wing as an inverted winger, Young had brief spells on the right flank; he was on the odd occasion deployed in the hole behind the front man. Ai??His versatility came in handy during several junctures of a grueling campaign.

In totality, Young showcased enough moments of quality that should spring eternal among the red faithful.

The Perennial Bugbears

So, Youngai??i??s left foot is almost as big a threat as a toothless rattle snake and that shouldnai??i??t have come as much of a surprise to those of who have followed him during his Villa and Watford. The fact was reiterated on number of occasions through the season as Youngai??i??s ability or the lack of it, to use his left leg was clearly evident. Consequently Young drifted infield and United’s attack lacked width down the left. His oneAi??dimensional approach made it easier for opposition full backs as Young rarelyAi??threatenedAi??to attack the byline.

Nevertheless, what was rather more dampening from the United supporters point of view was his reluctance to take on his man and beat him with trickery or pace. An out of form Young didnai??i??t trust his skills enough and with lack of confidence his impact on the match diminished.

Comparisons with Nani and Valencia were inevitable. Did Young do enough to dislodge them from their starting places? Probably not. Valencia was outstanding throughout the season while Nani mesmerizing in brief spells. Young missed the consistency and the bulldozing pace of Tony V, while Nani still has the edge on him as far as the match winning talent goes.

There could be more competition for places with Kagawa coming in and Moura also in the fray. Young needs to clean up the cobwebs and start the season on the front foot as only the best make the cut at Theatre of Dreams.

The Blot Of Play Acting

Young lost a lot of neutral admirers and perhaps a few United fans as well after he failed to stay on his feet on a few occasions. Although, it wasnai??i??t day light robbery as some had suggested and a few media outlets would have you believe, still it did the player and the club no good. Now, the albatross around the neck is hung and his reputation precedes him as referees begin to turn a blind eye.

The incidents against QPR and his former team Aston Villa got a lot of eye balls and even prompted Sir Alex to have a word with his player as the Scot feared Young would become the target of opposition fans ire.Ai??To be fair to Young there was contact each time he went down but the ai???divesai??i?? were theatrical and over the top and did not justify him going down so blatantly.Ai??Hopefully lessons were learned and Young will clean up his act for the upcoming season. Young already has a lot of competition from within the squad to starve off and could do without any sort of distractions.

The Ashley Young saga so far has been topsy-turvy to say the least with mountaineering highs and a few nadirs in between, however, you canai??i??t say it wasnai??i??t exhilarating.
