But rarely does everything go according to script. Probably these teams get caught up in the media hype of being ai???too Good to go downai??? and believe that they will stay up, naturally. A classic example of this can be seen in the last seasonai??i??s Italian Serie A. Sampdoria, who had a very good first half of the season, endured a miserable run of results in the second half and got relegated on the last day. That their poor run of form coincided with the sale of their strikers, Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini, was no coincidence.
Until the fag end of the season, despite their wretched run of form, everyone was convinced, or everyone convinced themselves, that Sampdoria were too good to go down. It was only after relegation that reality sunk in. A similar script was played out in the Spanish League with Deportivo. In Franceai??i??s Ligue1, Monaco were deemed ai???too good to go downai??? and they too got duly relegated to Ligue2.
This season, it seems FC Lorient are the ones playing their part to perfection in this drama. Last weekai??i??s 2-0 loss away at fellow relegation strugglers Nice, left them in 18thAi??place in the table, as a wretched run of form that has seen them pick up a solitary win in their last 16 games. There are a lot of things to be admired about Lorient.Ai?? Their style of play is quick one touch passing and their entire game is based on attacking principles. They also have a sound financial structure and a unique performance related pay structure.

But why do they find themselves in this rut, this season? Their last win in the league came 3 weeks ago, against Brest at home. This win was their first win in 4 months. Theyai??i??ve won only one of their last 16 games. But it all started very brightly for the team from Brittany. Their victory on the opening day of the league against Paris Saint German was hailed as a victory for a team against a collection of individuals. They dominated their illustrated opponents for vast stretches of the game and the 1-0 score line flattered the noveau rich Parisians. That prompted Gourcuff to wax lyrical about how his team does not have a Leo Messi but how they make up for it with their work rate and efficiency.
A cursory look at the stats gives us an insight into what is ailing the team. Ironically, for a team which prides itself on its attacking prowess, Lorient have scored a paltry 28 goals in 31 games this season, the second lowest in the league. Their defence is still doing its job, conceding 40 goals which is the 7thAi??best defence in the league and not bad for a team stuck in the relegation zone. Their lack of firepower in front of goal has been attributed to a lack of quality in the final third. Comparing the goal scoring statistics of this season with the previous season, one gets a clearer picture.
Last season, their top scorer was Kevin Gamerio with 22 goals – second highest tally in the league. They also had one of the best providers in the league in Morgan Amalfitano, who chalked up 12 assists, again second highest in the league. Both have since been sold, the former to PSG where he has scored 11 goals and the latter to Marsellie, where he has struggled for playing time. After moving on these two influential attacking players, Lorient resorted to their tried and tested practice of replacing them with young but unknown talents. So in came Mathieu Coutaduer, Lucas Mareque, Jeremie Aliadiere, Quercia and Joel Campbell- on loan from Arsenal.
But this time, their move has not paid dividends. The stats for this season provide a stark contrast. The top goal scorers this season are Innocent Emegreha with 5 goals, Arnold Muvemba with 3 goals and Yoann Jouffre with 3 goals. Jouffre, a bright spot in an otherwise bleak season, is also the primary provider with 8 assists. Jeremie Aliadiere, who was expected to take the goal scoring responsibility, has 2 goals and Joel Campbell after showing some initial progress finds himself out of the first team picture.
With complete lack of firepower upfront and an apparent lack of a Plan B in place, they have dropped like a stone. With other relegation threatened sides like Sochaux seemingly turning their form around at this crucial stage, Lorient’s inability to win against sides in and around them may comeback to haunt them.The fact that their next 3 games are against Montpellier, Lyon and Marseille exacerbates the situation, and given their current form, getting something out of these three games looks mighty improbable. With their last 2 games against Bordeaux and PSG, their run-in may prove a little too good for them to stay up.
