What a difference a week makes! Before last Tuesday night’s game at Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool had lost six out of their last seven games and the pressure was beginning to build on manager Kenny Dalglish. But, a last minute Andy Carroll header gave the Reds a morale-boosting 3-2 victory in a game where they played over an hour with 10-men following the dismissal of goalkeeper Alexander Doni. On Saturday, they followed it up with an even better victory – a 2-1 FA Cup semi-final win over Merseyside rivals Everton at Wembley, with Carroll once again the last-gasp hero. With the Carling Cup safely in the Anfield trophy cabinet and a FA Cup final date with Chelsea set for 5th of May, the storm clouds that were threatening Anfield look to have passed for the time being. Suddenly, life at Liverpool looks good again.
This Sunday though, they are reminded of past problems as former boss Roy Hodgson makes his first return to Anfield since his turbulent spell as boss. After the sacking of Rafael Benitez in June 2010, Hodgson was chosen as the man to steady the Liverpool ship. But, by the end of his six-month tenure in the Anfield hotseat, the good ship Liverpool instead resembled the Titanic! As if only 13 wins from 31 games was bad enough, Hodgson picked a team full of youngsters and bit-part players in the Carling Cup tie with then bottom of the Football League Northampton Town and suffered an embarrassing penalty shoot-out defeat. Signings such as Paul Konchesky and Christian Poulsen did little to increase the former Fulham manager’s stock on the Kop, whilst some of his post and pre-match press conferences left even his biggest of fans scratching their heads, or rubbing their faces as Roy often did on the Anfield touchline. When the Reds fell to their ninth league defeat of the season at Blackburn Rovers on January 5th 2011, new owners FSG reacted, relieved Hodgson of his duties and instilled Dalglish as temporary boss.
But Hodgson was not out of the game long as only five weeks later he was named as boss of West Bromwich Albion. The much-travelled boss put his Anfield nightmare behind him and led the Baggies to 11th, their highest finish for three decades, with 5 wins and 5 draws from their last 12 games, including a 2-1 home win over Liverpool.
This season, Hodgson has continued his fine job at The Hawthorns, with the Baggies currently sitting in 13th on 42 points, a mere four points behind Dalglish’s Liverpool, and more importantly, 13 points away from the relegation zone. When things weren’t going so well at the turn of the year, Hodgson showed that despite his poor transfer record at Anfield, he could still spot a player as January saw Liam Ridgewell and Keith Andrews arrive and help the club to two successive four-goal victories, including hitting five at arch-rivals Wolves.
With confidence restored at Anfield and the small matter of the Reds trying to finish above Everton in the league, the home side will start as favourites. But, with Hodgson likely to get a hostile reception from the Anfield crowd, the Baggies boss, who believes he wasn’t given a fair crack at Anfield, will be out to show the Kop that he wasn’t as bad as they thought.
Team News and Tactical Brief

With an FA Cup final now on the horizon, it is hard to predict how Liverpool will approach their remaining 5 league games. Will Dalglish try to build up some momentum in readiness for the clash with Chelsea or will he instead use the rest of the league programme to give fringe players a run out and blood some of the club’s exciting youngsters?
One thing sure to happen this weekend, is the return of goalkeeper Pepe Reina. After his controversial sending off at Newcastle United last month, Reina sat out three games, including Saturday’s Merseyside derby. During his suspension, Alexander Doni had his first taste of playing for the Reds, but his sending-off at Blackburn ruled him out of the semi-final too and created a fairytale story for Brad Jones. The Aussie keeper saved a Yakubu penalty with his first touch in the league for the Reds, then performed well against Everton. With Reina returning, Jones will have to settle for a place on the bench, but he is sure to get a good reception from the Anfield crowd for his recent efforts.
As for the rest of Sunday’s line-up, Daniel Agger may move across to the centre of defence to allow Martin Skrtel a well-deserved rest. With teams hard to break down at Anfield, full-backs are often the key to unlocking teams, so attack-minded Jose Enrique will return at left-back, whilst fit-again Martin Kelly will rival Glen Johnson for a start on the right.
In midfield is where the real selection headache begins. With the Reds likely to dominate possession against the Baggies, they shouldn’t really need to play a holding midfielder, so expect to see Jay Spearing make way, with Jordan Henderson partnering Steven Gerrard in the centre. Out wide, Dalglish likes to have pace on one side and the ability to tuck in and graft on the other, so he will either choose Downing left and Kuyt right, or go with Bellamy and Maxi, a duo that has combined on a number of occasions so far this season.
Up front, despite the option of playing Kuyt in his more favoured role, it’s likely that Dalglish will want to give the ever-improving Suarez-Carroll partnership another outing.
The Reds’ boss may also view this as a game where he can give some of the youngsters a go, so exciting winger Raheem Sterling, who got on for the last five minutes at home to WiganAi??Athletic, may make the bench along with Spanish playmaker Jesus Fernandez Saez, better known as Suso.

All-but-safe from relegation, the pressure should be off Roy Hodgson’s side when they visit Anfield, but the former Liverpool manager will still be keen to avoid defeat against his former employers.
With striker Marc-Antoine Fortune facing a late fitness test on a hamstring injury and key midfielder James Morrison a long-term absentee, the Baggies are likely to adopt a 4-5-1 formation with Peter Odemwingie leading the line.
A central midfield three of Paul Scharner, Youssof Mulumbu and Keith Andrews will attempt to stifle the Reds midfield, with goalscoring midfielder Andrews asked to try and support Odemwingie when the Baggies have possession. Chris Brunt will provide quality delivery from the left, whilst Graeme Dorrans, last weekend’s matchwinner against QPR, will operate on the right.
With Reds striker Andy Carroll likely to feature, Hodgson will opt for a physically strong back comprising of Jonas Olsson, Gareth McAuley, Liam Ridgewell and Billy Jones. As well as trying to keep out the Reds attacks, Baggies defender Ridgewell may prove to be the visitor’s best hope of a goal as he is a constant threat from set-pieces.
If West Brom find themselves behind at any point, Hodgson will have a plethora of goalscoring talent on the bench to turn to with Shane Long, Simon Cox and Solomon Tchoyi all capable of finding the net.

It has taken a while, but finally Andy Carroll is starting to look like a Liverpool player.Ai??Often found on the bench, Carroll used his start at Blackburn to put in a good performance, topped off with a last minute winner. On Saturday, despite missing a host of chances, the big striker kept plugging away and once again proved to be the match-winner.
His confidence should now be soaring, so if Dalglish rewards him with another start, Carroll could continue his mini revival.

It’s hard to predict what sort of Liverpool we will see on Sunday. Will it be one that is full of confidence following two victories or will it be one saving themselves for Wembley? But, with West Brom all but safe from relegation, and with little else but pride to play for, whichever face of Liverpool shows up, they should still be good enough to pick up all three points. With this in mind, TheHardTackle predicts only a sixth home win of the season for Dalglish’s men.
