The Premier League brings a sense of pure joy to football fans all over the globe. The intense competition, the superstar footballers and club loyalties make each week highly anticipated.
The top teams facing each other provides added excitement and fans circle their calendars for these games well in advance. Rivalries are renewed and the banter between rival fans reaches fever pitch as the game draws nearer.
Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield this week in a highly anticipated encounter. Both teams are going through a transition period with several new players coming in to the side. The Premiership giants have had a somewhat stuttering start to their campaigns and the onus on getting three points from this game shall be high.
Liverpool and Arsenal have had a long drawn struggle in the transfer window over Nuhi Sahin and his presence is expected to provide added spice to the encounter. Encounters such as these are known for the banter between fans and resident authors Sreyon Chatterjee (SC) and Sounak Mukherjee (SM) try to get each other on the back foot at TheHardTackle. SM: One of the Bookies came up with the stat that ‘Brendan Rodgers is on top of the list’ as the first manager to be sacked this season? How much of a gibberish do you think that is? How much of belief does a Scouser have in Brendan Rodgers?
SC:Ai??After going through a turbulent time over the last three years, which saw three managerial changes, Liverpool finally seem to have found the right man to take the club forward. After a highly publicised search for a manager, FSG seem to have finally found someone who echoes their philosophies. Brendan Rodgers’ management of the media and transfers has been exemplary so far, while the tactics and the possession based football philosophy is slowly starting to take shape. Rodgers has a clear long term plan on how to rebuild Liverpool FC. The performance of the team might be inconsistent over this period but both – the owners and the fans, will be looking for steady improvement from the side.
Fans have already taken to the manager. Rodgers’ footballing philosophy and his eloquent interviews have endeared the Anfield faithful.Ai??Finishing among the top 4 positions is a priority for this season but it is not a criteria on which Rodgers will retain his job. The owners are likely to give Rodgers time to implement his ideas and barring some catastrophic performances on the pitch Rodgers is likely to be at Anfield for many years to come.
SM: Are Liverpool realistically targeting European Place finish this season? How much of a change of expectations are there from board and fans considering the case of Rodgers with Dalglish?
SC: Cautious optimism is probably what would describe the sentiments of Liverpool fans most aptly at this point of time. Kenny Dalglish’s return brought with it a lot of euphoria for fans. After spending heavily in the last summer window, fans were optimistic about pushing for a top 4 spot. However, things didn’t quite go according to plan and while Liverpool’s performance in the domestic cups was quite outstanding, the league results left a lot to be desired.
After years of underachieving, fans have tempered their expectations and are more realistic in their expectations. The top 7 teams have all strengthened and fans realize that breaking into the top 4 is going to be a tough task. Nonetheless, with Rodgers’ football philosophy and some smart buys in the transfer market, Liverpool fans do harbour hopes of getting back in the Champions League.
SM: Even though Suarez is an exceptional striker, isn’t there a need for Liverpool to buy another top-class striker and not depend on the Uruguayan completely?
SC:Ai??Suarez has had an excellent goalscoring record over the years for Uruguay as well as Ajax. Although he was the top scorer last season, he has been unable replicate the same sort of goal-scoring form for The Reds. Carroll has been inconsistent since his big money move from Newcastle and has now gone on loan to West Ham. Although the addition of Borini will help to ease the goal-scoring burden off Suarez’s shoulders, Liverpool definitely need more firepower. Lack of goals had been the main reason for Liverpool’s poor performance last season and this season too Liverpool have yet to score from open play. The Reds will need to bolster their attack with more striking options before the end of the window. Liverpool created plenty of goalscoring opportunities last season and adding a poacher to the side would do their chances no harm. Names like Klaas-Jan Huntelaar have been linked with The Reds and we shall have to wait to see who Rodgers gets in on deadline day.
SM: Is Rodgers seriously thinking about using Downing at left full back this season? Or is there a possibility of offloading him in the final hour of transfer deadline day?Ai??
SC:Ai??As ludicrous as it may sound, Downing as a left full back is a genuine possibility. Rodgers likes to have his full backs play as high up the pitch as possible and provide width to the team. Downing seems to have the perfect attributes to play in that role. He will provide pace down the left flank and is capable of swinging in a good cross. He has performed well in the games he has been used as a left back. Enrique lacks competition for the left back slot and Downing may be the one to provide that. With the pressure of scoring off his back, Downing may actually contribute a lot more to the side from a left back position. Rodgers does seem to rate him and he might yet have a future at Anfield.
SM: Having secured the signing of Sahin from the mouth of Arsenal, where will be his usual position in the side? Does he fit in the side with Lucas considering they are of similar mould?
SC:Ai??The key to Rodgers’ system is having two strong midfielders, who can control the game. Rodgers likes mobile midfielders, who are good passers of the ball but are not shy of putting in a tackle. Lucas, Allen, Henderson and Shelvey are all similar in that regard. Gerrard can also play the role when required. Sahin has all these attributes and would fit seamlessly into Rodgers’ plans. Much like the other players that Rodgers has at his disposal Sahin is multifunctional and can be used in a variety of roles. He would be used as an additional option and could be paired with any of the other young midfielders in the side.
With Lucas now out for 3 months, Sahin would probably get a lot more gametime than previously expected. However, even with Lucas back in the side there is no reason as to why the two cannot form a successful partnership at the heart of the Liverpool midfield.
SM: Finally, after seeing all kinds of players leaving clubs for money and citing ‘ambition to win trophies’ as an excuse, what kind of a relief does a player like Steven Gerrard give to a fanAi??? As far as his importance to the side goes, is he still that ‘one moment of magic later’ game-changing Stevie G of old?
SC: Players like Gerrard are a rare breed. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest players of his generation but probably does not have as many trophies in his cabinet to match his talent. Few players would sacrifice their personal ambitions to the extent Captain Fantastic has done for Liverpool.
Although age does seem to be catching up, his presence in the side gives an instant boost to fans and players alike. Gerrard no longer possesses the physical attributes to play the “blood and thunder” style of football for over 90 minutes. Class is permanent however and Gerrard has started to mould his game accordingly. The moments of magic may now be few and far between, but he still brings a lot to the table for Liverpool and they are a stronger side with him in the team than without.
Having survived some difficult questions from the Arsenal fanatic, it is now Sreyon’s turn to shoot some tricky ones towards Sounak.
SC: Two goalless draws against teams which The Gunners should ideally beat. What are your thoughts on Arsenal’s start to the season?
SM: Yes, I agree we are have dropped four points from the point of view of our ambitions for this season. But, to be honest, I am extremely happy with the work the defensive unit has done in the two games. Again, you will argue about the fact that Sunderland and Stoke City have, hardly, the attacking players that can trouble your defense. I agree with that too, but we have had made lots of defensive errors in the last few seasons, that has cost us games. Those seem to have been amended. Moreover, we ‘owned’ Stoke at The Britannia. Frankly, I don’t remember seeing an Arsenal team over there and calmly dealing with ‘their game’. I never had a nerve-wracking moment in the last game. As far as goals are concerned, they will come, let the attacking unit, which is new and fresh, get to know each other.
SC:Ai??The last time Liverpool met Arsenal at Anfield, Robin Van Persie scored a brace including an injury time winner. How much will he be missed this time round? What can we expect from Arsenal this Saturday?
SM: Well, van Persie is a fantastic player, any team in the world will miss him if he leaves that team. He was an asset, he provided us with a lot of goals, and of course, that last-minute winner at Anfield was simply special. Without him, we will have to distribute our goals to the rest of the team – shared by Podolski, Giroud, Gervinho, Theo, Cazorla and Ramsey. I can see 50 goals coming from these men if they are totally committed to Arsenal’s cause.
This Saturday, we won’t be any different from what was seen in the last game. We’ll continue to defend immaculately keeping the full backs close to the center backs for most parts of the game, making life difficult for Theo and Gervinho. But, of course, Cazorla will be our main man anchoring the midfield, pulling the strings. I expect the team to give Liverpool a serious run for their money.
SC:Ai??What are your views on Arsenal’s summer transfer window? Has Arsene Wenger done enough to replace the likes of key players like Robin Van Persie and Alex Song?
SM: Again, van Persie isAi??irreplaceableAi??individually, but can be replaced in the long run with a collective effort from the attacking unit of the team. I’ll assume Arsene will bring in a defensive minded midfielder before the transfer window shuts down on us. If he doesn’t bring anybody, then we are truly short on the ‘replacing Song’ front. Diaby, Wilshere, Frimpong and Coquellin can all slot into that position, but no one has the presence that the Cameroonian had at the center of our midfield.
SC:Ai??The Nuri Sahin saga will provide added spice to the encounter. What will Arsenal fans have in store for the Turkish international should he be involved on Saturday?
SM: Is he starting? I am not really bothered about him now. If he has chosen Liverpool above Arsenal, it is his decision and I will respect that, but not necessarily like that. I don’t really expect ourAi??magnificentAi??away fans to jeer the Turkish International. That will be too childish!
SC:Ai??The top 7 clubs have all brought in several talented players. How optimistic are you about Arsenal’s chances for securing the top 4 this season?
SM: I am quite confident that we can finish in the top 4 yet again this season, unless we hit one of those crazy injury crisis. With almost a new attacking unit, Arsenal fans will have to give them some time to bed in. The defensive unit is quite experienced and under fresh supervision now, so I expect quite a lot from them. Overall, a top 4 finish is quite likely; a trophy not likely though.
SC:Ai??Last season saw both teams walk away with away victories. What are your predictions for this week’s encounter?
SM: I am not sure if both the teams are more dangerous when they play each other away from home. Anywho, I expect Arsenal to win this game or at least come back home with a solitary point and another good defensive performance.
