The transfer season is on in full swing and a host of names have been linked to Liverpool. Veterans like Fabio Aurelio, Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodriquez have all left Anfield while Fabio Borini has become the first signing in Brendan Rodgersai??i?? ambitious project.
There are plenty more arrivals and departures to follow in the coming months. Clint Dempsey and Joe Allen have been strongly linked to Liverpool. What would their transfers mean for The Reds? THT takes a closer look.
Clint Dempsey

RumorsAi??have been steadily gaining pace about the 29-year-old Fulham frontmanai??i??s transfer to Liverpool. Dempsey enjoyed his best season in the Premier League last year, finishing third highest in the scoring charts. The attacking midfielder scored 17 goals and had 6 assists in the last season and his displays have attracted interest from a host of clubs.
Dempsey is versatile, hardworking and competitive – traits which the manager holds in high regard. Dempsey has played mostly as a left midfielder for Fulham over the years but was employed as an attacking midfielder last season. He was also used as a striker on five occasions and took to the position like a duck to water, scoring 5 goals.
Dempsey can be a replacement for Andy Carroll but it is more likely that he will be used as an attacking midfielder playing behind the target man. Dempsey can also be used as a left forward in the likely event of Craig Bellamyai??i??s departure.

The American international had 3.9 shots and 1.5 key passes per game last season and was a constant threat for the opposition defense. His pressing high up the pitch will help Liverpool win the ball back quickly in dangerous areas. Dempseyai??i??s aggression might land him a booking every now and then but he would add some much-needed steel to the side which has often been accused of not being able to ai???win uglyai??i?? when required.
Dempsey however, does not quite fit into FSG’s ai???moneyballai??i?? approach to football. At 29, Dempsey is at the peak of his powers but is not likely to have any significant resale value for Liverpool. However, FSG have been looking to actively promote Liverpool in USA and Dempseyai??i??s transfer would certainly help to sell some extra shirts across the Atlantic.
This move makes sense, both footballing wise as well as marketing wise, and at A?8 million, Dempsey could prove to be a good bit of business for The Reds..
Joe Allen

At the heart of the ai???Swanselonaai??i?? midfield, this 22-year-old from Carmarthen, Wales ran the show in a manner which his more illustrious Spanish counterparts would have been proud of. A 92% pass completion rate is quite a staggering achievement in itself but to have achieved it in the helter-skelter of the Premier League speaks volumes for this ladai??i??s talent.
Brendan Rodgers has worked closely with Allen before at Swansea and is keen on securing the diminutive Welshmanai??i??s services.Ai??Perhaps there is no other player more suited to Rodgersai??i?? brand of pass and move than Joe Allen. At Liverpool, Joe Allen along with Jordan Henderson would be competing for midfield places with world-class talents like Lucas and Steven Gerrard and there is no end to how much he would benefit from playing alongside these players on a daily basis.

Much like Xavi at Barcelona, Joe Allen was used by Rodgers as a central play-maker at Swansea. Along with Leon Britton, the duo was responsible for breaking up opposition play, recycling possession and initiating attacks. Apart from his obvious passing ability, Allen is also a tenacious tackler and reads the game well. He will be expected to demonstrate the same qualities at Liverpool. If the Merseyside team do well then it is likely they will play over 70 games this season and Allen will get plenty of chances to impress the Anfield faithful.
Liverpool were found wanting in the midfield in the absence of Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva. With the likes of Allen in the squad, Liverpool would still be able to compete given any contingencies. His arrival though could spell the exit for Charlie Adam who might not fit into Rodgersai??i?? footballing philosophy.
There is very little downside to this deal but the transfer fee could be a sticking point. Media speculation pegs the figure at anywhere between A?10m and A?20m. If Rodgers manages to secure his services around the A?10m mark, then it would definitely be smart business by Liverpool.
Joe Allen is only 22 and is sure to improve further. If he were to be sold in the future, he is likely fetch a substantial amount and this would be in line with FSGai??i??s new policy regarding transfers. If Allen can continue to showcase his unbelievable from last season, Liverpool may well become the passing machine which fans are hoping for..
Life Without Wingers at Liverpool
Liverpool have had some of the best wingers in the game over the years and the likes of John Barnes and Steve Heighway kept The Kop bouncing throughout the 70ai??i??s and 80ai??i??s. But, in the modern era, the RedsAi?? have had a real dearth of quality wingers and many have correlated this with a lack of premiership titles won.
Inverted wingers/Winger forwards are in vogue and Liverpool has started to make the effort to secure quality additions up-front. In the current Liverpool squad, only Stewart Downing can be termed as a traditional winger. Liverpool have not been linked with any traditional wingers in this transfer window either as Rodgers’ footballing philosophy does not include classical wingers.
The manager has been vocal about playing three forwards upfront to solve Liverpoolai??i??s goal scoring problems and in the coming season, we will probably find the likes of Luis Suarez, Fabio Borini and Clint Dempsey playing as a flexible front three. Raheem Sterling and Daniel Pacheco are two players from the youth set up who would be perfect for this system and could get some playing time given the extra games that Liverpool would have to play this season.
A team without wingers seems to be the way forward for Liverpool. Only time will tell if the move yields some long sought after silverware.
