Rahim saab was adamant. India was all set to face South Korea in Jakarta Asian Games. Indian contingent had been subjected to jeers and barracking from home fans throughout ai??i??62 Asian Games. There was tension in the air and Syed Abdul Rahim wanted to make a crucial change in his team.
The change looked highly risky. With Indiaai??i??s first choice goalkeeper out with illness, Pradyut Burman, from Eastern Railways FC, had been in exceptional form throughout the tournament. Rahim saab wanted to replace Burman in the final and bring back Indiaai??i??s first choice ai???keeper, despite of concerns about his fitness. He insisted that the 6 feet 4 inches custodianai??i??s physical dominance would make a difference against Koreans. Like most of the times, Rahimai??i??s stubbornness won in the end. And like many other occasions he was eventually proven right. Despite starting the match in shaky form, Indian #1 came to his elements as the match progressed. Jarnail Singh and PK Banerjee scored goals to give India a decisive lead. Korea pulled one back in second half as the Pakistan hockey team (incidentally only spectators in the stadium supporting India!) had their hearts in their mouths for a brief period. But the custodian held firm, as India captured their most important medal in football till date. He had justified Rahimai??i??s faith in him.
But then again, Rahimai??i??s faith was not misplaced in first place. After all he was Peter Thangaraj, the gentle giant from Hyderabad, who was a stood tall (pun intended) among the stellar cast during golden age of Indian football.
Thangaraj Makes a Mark with Services
Born in December, 1936 in Bolarum, Andhra Pradesh, Thangaraj blossomed as a teenage footballer and represented the likes of Morning Star Club and Friends Union Club. His exploits soon attracted the attention of bigger clubs as he joined Services and represented the institutional side Madras Regimental Center in 1953. Curiously, Thangaraj, thanks to his height still played as a lanky center-forward when he joined MRC, for a measly sum of Rs. 37. However, as his career in the army team progressed he dropped back and began to focus on goalkeeping. Both Thangaraj and Indian football would be glad about this decision.
1950s were the golden era for Institutional sides. Syed Abdul Rahimai??i??s famous Hyderabad City Police (nicknamed the ai???City Afghansai???) were challenging the dominance of Kolkata. Madras Regimental Center, a historical entity, being the first regiment in Indian Army, also enjoyed a glorious spell of successin this era. With Thangaraj in goal they reached their first ever Durand Cup final in 1955. After a nail biting encounter with Indian Air Force they triumphed 3-2. Madras Regimental Center became only the second Institutional side to lift the Durand Cup (other being Hyderabad City Police) after independence. Three years later, they repeated the same feat, this time demolishing Gurkha Brigade 2-0. On their way to the title they demolished East Bengal 4-0 with Thangaraj stopping opponent’s legendary forward-line.
Thangaraj, still justAi??22, had quickly established himself as one of the most talented players in India. Services reached their first ever Santosh Trophy final in 1958 but lost narrowly to Bengal. Two years later Thangaraj further established his reputation by captaining Services to their first ever Santosh Trophy title. He was inspirational in the final as he kept out a star studded Bengal attack in the first final which ended 0-0. Services won the repeat final 1-0, thanks to a goal from Shyam Thapa,Ai??with Thangaraj again being unbeatable under the posts. Peter Thangaraj was one of the hottest properties in Indian football at that time and it was just a matter of time before he made the switch to bigger football clubs.
A Fan Favourite in Kolkata
He joined Kolkata giants Mohammedan Sporting in 1960/61 season. The Black and Whites were going through a lean patch at that time. Thangarajai??i??s arrival failed to remedy their downslide as they failed to land silverware during his tenure. Though he failed to find success in Mohammedan, Thangaraj achieved a lot in these three years. These three years coincided with his winning a gold medal in 1962 Asian Games and representing the Bengal team which won the Santosh Trophy in 1962.
In 1963 Thangaraj moved to cross town rivals Mohun Bagan. The Green & Maroons had built up the Los Galacticos of Indian football in early 60s. Thangaraj joined forces with his national team mates Jarnail Singh, T Rahman, Kempiah, Arumayinayigam and Chuni Goswami to complete what was easily the best team in India. Trophies started flowing in as he won back to back Durand Cup and Calcutta League titles in 1963 and 1964. This was followed by another Santosh Trophy title, this time with Railways. Till date, Thangaraj holds the unique record of winning Santosh trophy with three different teams.
After spending two successful seasons in Mohun Bagan, Peter Thangaraj joined the elite list of players who have represented all three Kolkata giants when he joined East Bengal. It was in East Bengal that he would reach the pinnacle of his club career. With Thangaraj in goal East Bengal stopped Mohun Baganai??i??s dominance in Calcutta Football League by capturing the title in 1966, their first in five years. East Bengal also won the Shield that year, doing the double. A year later Thangaraj achieved the rare feat of winning the Durand Cup with three different sides as East Bengal lifted their fifth title. 1969 was a memorable year for him as he was selected as the captain of Red & Golds. He led his team to a derby double over Mohun Bagan in the league and won the Rovers Cup as well. However, he faced a demoralizing 3-1 loss against the arch-rivals in IFA Shield final and was culpable for two of the goals.
In 1970, the ageing Thangaraj gave one of his most memorable performances in the IFA Shield final. Playing Iranai??i??s PAS Club, he along with Sudhir Karmakar formed an impregnable wall. A solid defensive display was capped off by a late goal from Parimal Dey as East Bengal wrapped up one of their most famous wins.
After a stellar six year stint with East Bengal, Thangaraj played for one more season in Mohammedan before retiring from professional football. It was end of an era.
Excelling With National Team
Peter Thangaraj made his debut for the national team at a tender age of 19 when he travelled to Dhaka to participate in Quadrangular tournament. He quickly became a mainstay for Rahimai??i??s golden team and was the undisputed #1 for almost a decade. With Indian team he participated in 1956 Melbourne Olympics when India became the first Asian team to reach last four in Olympics football. He was an established first team player during 1958 Asian Games. Thangaraj played in goal as India almost pulled off a shock win over France in 1960 Rome Olympics. Thangarajai??i??s performance againstAi??Indonesia in 1959 during a pre-olympicAi??match eventually became a stuff of legends. His peak of his career with the national team came in Jakarta in 1962. Despite being ill for most of the tournament Rahim placed his faith on Thangarajai??i??s physical attributes and fielded him in final. After a shaky start he made strong saves to deny Korean players. The goal he conceded was rather soft, however. Jaydeep Basu remarks that if Thangaraj was fully fit then he would have never missed the flight of the cross which led to the goal.
In 1964, Thangaraj was one of the central figuresas India finished runners-up in Asian Cup. 1968 Asian Cup proved to be his final major tournament for the national team. During his almost two decade long career for India, Thangaraj also represented the country in Merdeka Cup multiple times.
Legacy
Peter Thangaraj was one of the most popular and easily recognizable players of his time. Affectionately referred as ai???Uncleai??? by his team-mates for his paternal nature, he was respected all around. Such was his popularity that coolies in Howrah station in Kolkata refused to accept money from him even after three and half decades of leaving the game! Arun Ghosh, a national team mate, recollected how the army man would always wake up early in the morning and then go about waking rest of the team up. He was a strict disciplinarian but had a heart of gold.
Thangaraj was also a revolutionary ai???keeper in Indian football. A devout fan of Lev Yashin, he was the first man who showed that goalkeepers could assist attackers with their long kicks and long throws. Such was the force of his kicks that he once cleared the East Bengal ground with one of his kicks. The likes of PK Banerjee and Chuni Goswami have often credited Thangarajai??i??s long kicks as source of some of their more important goals. One of the very few criticism leveled at him is his weakness for low shots.
Thangaraj received international acclaim as well. He was the first and only Indian to be selected as Asiaai??i??s Best Goal keeper (1958) and represented Asian All Stars team twice. He also received the Arjuna award during his playing career. East Bengal club awarded him their all-time best goalkeeper title as well.
Peter Thangaraj passed away on 24th November, 2008 after a massive heart-attack. His passing away at the age of 72 shocked many as the great man was seen playing football just months before his death in a five a side tournament. Till his death, he was associated with football as he worked as an advisor to the football division of Bokaro Steel Plant.
