La Liga 2012-13 Season Preview: Part 2

This is our second part of our La Liga season preview dealing with mid table and bottom half teams. You can also read our first part here.

Granada

Coach: Juan Antonio Anquela, Spain

Stadium: Estadio Nuevo Los CA?rmenes, Granada

Capacity: 22,524

Granada are a team which is going to be always in transition, majorly consisting of players who are on loan from Udinese. From the brink of closure to first division, the journey has been an eventful one for the club. There may be a lack of continuity and a solid project at the club but the same cannot be said about the availability of players.

According to a partnership agreement in place with Udinese, reserve and youth team players of the Italian club are offered a chance to impress at Granada. Also, players who may get limited opportunities are sent to Granada to hone their skills in a highly technical league so they are ready when the opportunity at Udinese comes across. Both clubs are in a win-win situation, thanks to such an agreement. Nine new players have arrived at the club this season already.

Last season position: 17

Prediction: Relegation battle

Player To Watch Out: Antonio Floro Flores

The Italian striker is contracted to Udinese but spent majority of the season on loan at Genoa where he amassed 10 goals in only 18 games. His impressive strike rate must have been a huge factor in his loan transfer to Granada. The club will be hoping for him to continue with a similar strike rate.

Rayo Vallecano

Coach: Paco, Spain

Stadium: Campo de FA?tbol de Vallecas, Madrid

Capacity: 15,500

While Rayo Vallecano have their stadium in close proximity to Real Madrid, the financial difference between the two clubs could not have been more. While Real Madrid are planning a ai??i??200m renovation of their stadium, Rayo’s annual budget is less thanAi??ai??i??20m.

Under new owners and in administration, Rayo Vallecano are another club who are struggling with their finances. Last year, they could not travel by plane and when they travelled by bus, had to avoid highways to save the toll money. When they nearly beat Real Madrid at their home last season, the players did not swap their shirts with their more illustrious counterparts because they could not afford it.

The support staff and the players were unpaid and the players willingly forfeited their wages to pay for their support staff. The fans come every week and cheer for their team, no matter what, dancing wildly, celebrating their team. Even when they lose, they celebrate. For the fans, watching their team in action is the greatest pleasure. Even Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid’s coach applauded their spirit while Iker Casillas admitted that Rayo did not deserve to lose last season against them.

The stadium with seating only on three sides never stops supporting their team. Under their previous manager, JosAi?? RamA?n Sandoval, they played pure attacking football. It did not matter if they were against Barcelona or Real Madrid, they just played the same way, and the fans applauded the same way. Its is probably one of the most awesome stadiums to watch football in Spain and the players know that they have to give back to the fans. The love is mutual.

But now, Sandoval is gone after a dispute with the new management. Their best player, Michu, the league’s highest scoring midfielder last season has been sold to Swansea. It remains to be seen if Paco, the new coach can pull off some magic like Sandoval did. But, one thing is for certain. The fans will be cheering for them all the time.

Last season position: 17

Prediction: Bottom Half

Player To Watch Out: Piti

Piti has been at Rayo since 2007 and has seen everything at the club and played a huge role in their promotion to the first division. With Michu now gone, there will be pressure on Piti to deliver the goals.

Real Betis

Coach: Pepe Mel, Spain

Stadium: Benito VillamarAi??n, Seville

Capacity: 56,432

Speaking of fans, they do not get any better than bAi??ticos. Real Betis is probably one of the most loved teams in the La Liga. Their fans are always behind their team, singing aloud in unison and singing ‘Long live Betis, even if they lose!’

Such is the love for Betis in their stadium. With a budget slightly greater than Levente or Osasuna, Real Betis applied for administration and have a debt of around ai??i??40m. Even under such circumstances, the team after four matches in La Liga last year, topped the table and was the only team to have a 100% record all across Europe. Its may not be a significant achievement when you come to think of it, but it is.

Pepe Mel ensured that his team avoid relegation last year and marshalled his players brilliantly. Last year, they had Roque Santa Cruz, the City striker on loan but now have let him go after his high wage demands. It remains to be seen what Betis can pull off this year but one thing is certain: everybody wants them to stay.

Last season finish: 13th

Prediction: Bottom half

Player To Watch Out: RubAi??n Castro

The Spaniard was in brilliant form when Real Betis gained promotion by winning in the second division. He was prolific last year too when he scored 16 goals leading the club to 13th place. His partnership with Jorge Molina will be crucial to the club’s fortunes this year again.

Espanyol

Coach: Mauricio Pochettino, Argentina

Stadium: Estadi CornellAi??-El Prat, Barcelona

Capacity: 40,500

Last season finish: 14th

Prediction: Bottom Half

Espanyol’s story is another interesting story in the league. They are probably the only team to have cost FC Barcelona the title atleast a couple of times in recent memory.Ai??Mauricio Pochettino’s side has been the only side that has suffocated Guardiola’s Barcelona more than any other Spanish side, including Real Madrid.

That itself must be a huge compliment to the Argentine coach. With a debt of ai??i??100m and relegation hovering when he took over, Espanyol have come a long way. Of course, they don’t make big money signings unlike their city counterparts but they do have an academy that churns out first team players pretty much like their city rivals.

Pochettino’s emphasis on youth appears to be paying rich dividends and the club has managed to put itself on the right track and balance its books. Recently, they were embroiled in a controversy regarding the Catalan Super Cup which they called off after disputes with the Catalan federation.

Player To Watch Out: Joan Capdevilla

The World Cup winner is finally back at the club where he started out as an academy player. There is no doubting the pedigree of the left-back and his World Cup and Euro winning medal will attest to that. In a team filled with youngsters and academy graduates, Capdevilla will be expected to guide them all and inspire them.

Real Mallorca

Coach: JoaquAi??n CaparrA?s, Spain

Stadium: Iberostar Stadium, Mallorca

Capacity: 23,142

Real Mallorca, in 2010, entered into voluntary administration inspite of finishing fifth in La Liga. They were disallowed from participating in the Europa League and had to be rescued by a consortium which included the tennis superstar, Rafael Nadal. And then they have clawed their way back. After a two year struggle, Mallorca have managed to finish eighth last season under Joaquin Caparros.

Caparros is a very good coach when it comes to managing teams with low budgets and with Mallorca’s operating budget set at ai??i??30m this year, he probably is the best man to lead this club. Mallorca have already lost 9 players including influential players like Ivan Ramis, Pablo Caceres and Chori Castro. Caparros, unflustered by it, has called up nine players from the youth squad and majority of them are expected to make the cut this year.

But it has not been entirely one way traffic. They have signed up Javier Arizmendi and Javi Marquez with rumors of Johan Djourou also arriving at the club. Caparros has made it clear that he would love a new striker but is no rush to sign anyone as yet.

Last season finish: 8th

Prediction: Top Half

Player To Watch Out: Javi Marquez

The former Espanyol player was a target of many clubs but he finally chose Real Mallorca and was signed for around ai??i??1.2m. Expectations are high as Marquez is a technically sound player with the ability to hold the ball as well as recover it quickly.

Getafe

Coach: Luis Garcia Plaza, Spain

Stadium: Coliseum Alfonso PAi??rez, Madrid

Capacity: 17,700

Getafe is another club which has been bought over by a Middle-Eastern Sheikh but thankfully the owner has not pumped great money into the club to leave it with a huge debt. When the Royal Emirates group bought the club, it was expected that they would make an effort to help the club to attain an European spot. But, no such thing has happened.

When you are in Madrid, you are sure to be usurped by the bigger club, Real Madrid. Getafe is known as being a cousin to Real because transfers between clubs are easy. There are no hard feelings and definitely not a derby feeling in between both the clubs. Of course, Atletico and Rayo are considered better supported in Madrid but Getafe does have its share of supporters as well.

Getafe appointed Luis Garcia after he helped Levante avoid relegation miraculously. Garcia is the person who laid the foundations for Levante to prosper and Getafe will be looking up to him to revive their fortunes and get them an European spot.

Last season finish: 11th

Prediction: Bottom half

Player To Watch Out: Pedro Leon

Technically, he still is a Madrid player but he will never play for Real Madrid. Sidelined by Mourinho because of a coaching conflict, the Spaniard is back on loan at the club where he shone before he left for Real Madrid. Continuing his loan spell for the second year now, he would be hoping to be more productive this year compared to last which was hampered due to injuries. He will be hoping to make an impact this year.

Deportivo La CoruAi??a

Coach: JosAi?? Luis Oltra, Spain

Stadium: Riazor, La CoruAi??a

Capacity: 34,600

When Deportivo la Coruna were relegated, everybody was disappointed. A force to reckon with at the end of the old and start of the new millenium, ‘Super Depor’ slowly floundered and as the story is with most Spanish clubs, messed up their finances. The final nail in the coffin was the ridiculously bland football Deportivo played before they got relegated.

But after relegation, the club appointed JosAi?? Luis Oltra, who asked for patience from the fans and set about the job of rebuilding the club. And he did it in style. Deportivo won back promotion comfortably, winning the second division with a flurry of goals and finally treating Riazor to the performances it deserves. Also, it means that the haunted Riazor, especially for Real Madrid, one of the most tough away fixtures, will finally have its say in this year’s La Liga.

The club has let go of quite a few of its star players from previous seasons but the relegation of Villarreal has benefitted them as it has done for various clubs in the first division. They signed Carlos Marchena and got Javier Camunas on loan to help their midfield and inject it with experience.

Deportivo still retains its set of fans across of Europe who were enthralled by this team and their performances. They all will be looking forward to a new beginning.

Last season finish: Promoted

Prediction: Top half

Player To Watch Out: Daniel Aranzubia

The only goal keeper in La Liga to score from open play, Aranzubia is quite a talent. From being called up to UEFA Euro 2004 and replacing Casillas in an international friendly to watching his club getting relegated, the Spaniard has endured it all. An excellent goal keeper who will provide a much needed security at the back, he is our Deportivo’s player to watch out for.

Celta Vigo

Coach: Paco Herrera, Spain

Stadium: BalaAi??dos, Vigo

Capacity: 32,500

Celta got relegated five years ago after struggling with their finances and mismanagement. But, they seemed to have learnt their lessons. They did not come up instantly. They have worked their way up, reducing their debt and improving management. This time, they look better prepared to deal with the first division. Though it is difficult to see them coming out of the bottom half, Celta can be expected to put on some decent displays of attacking football.

Last season finish: Promoted

Prediction: Bottom half

Player To Watch Out: Iago Aspas

The striker was influential in Celta’s promotion last year by scoring 23 goals. Celta will be hoping that he retains his form in the first division too.

Real Zaragoza

Coach: Manolo JimAi??nez, Spain

Stadium: La Romareda, Zaragoza

Capacity: 34,596

It is probably a miracle that Real Zaragoza are still playing first division football this year. Amid reports that the club owe more than ai??i??130m in debt, out of which ai??i??50m is unpaid wages, Zaragoza are a mess too big to ignore. It is again the result of ridiculous management, an owner spending on useless players and making tall promises. Real Zaragoza may never recover from this mess but yet here they are fighting to live another season. And the credit of making it possible should solely go to one man, Manolo Jimenez.

“Leaving now would be the act of a coward. I am the captain of this ship and I am not going. We need to let women and children off the boat first, then the men, then the crew and last of all the captain,” he insisted when asked about his future at the club after the fans protested against the management. He has remained true to his word and acted as a real captain, pulling up his boys, with nothing to lose and mounting a challenge to avoid relegation. The club has managed to hold onto him for now. But pulling off a miracle two times is something which probably even Moses can’t pull off.

Last season finish: 16th

Prediction: Relegation

Player To Watch Out: Romaric

After releasing some of their influential players like Angel Lafita, Zaragoza has signed Romaric from Sevilla for free. A central defender, he was decent in his loan spell at Espanyol last year.

Valladolid

Coach: Miroslav A?ukiAi??, Yugoslavia

Stadium:Ai??Estadio Nuevo JosAi?? Zorrilla, Valladolid

Capacity: 26,512

Real Valladolid got promoted to the first division after winning their play-off round against Alcorcon. Frankly, very little information is available on Valladolid and it remains to be seen what this team is capable of in the Primera League.

They have lost quite a few players who helped them in promotion to various teams and have not made any substantial signings. As usual, their finances are weak and management isn’t proper. Not a good recipe for a team looking to survive in the first division.

Last season finish: Promoted

Prediction: Relegation

Player To Watch Out: Javi Guerra

The Spaniard has already scored 46 goals in 80 appearances for Valladolid and spoke about his excitement to finally make an impact in La Liga. We sincerely hope that he makes the same kind of impact he had in the Seguna division.

Real Sociedad

Coach: Philippe Montanier, France

Stadium: Anoeta, San Sebastian

Capacity: 32,200

You could be forgiven if you heard Real Sociedad only when reading about Xabi Alonso. But, Real Sociedad is much bigger than that. Traditionally one of the big two of the Basque region, the other one being Athletic Bilbao, the club has always produced brilliant youngsters from its youth system.

Another feature of this squad is the reliance on youth- all players are under the age of 30. Leading them all is Xabi Prieto, a brilliant midfielder in the mold of his namesake, Xabi Alonso, on whose brilliance hinge the fortunes of this team. Carlos Vela, after being released by Arsenal has finally found his feet at Real Sociedad and his contribution to the team last year was immense.

Last season finish: 12th

Prediction: Top Half

Player To Watch Out: Antoine Griezmann

The French midfielder moved to Real Sociedad’s academy at the age of 13 and moved up the ranks to finally grab a spot in the first team. Relatively unknown in France due to his progress in Spain, Griezmann finally caught everyone’s eye when he impressed in the 2010 UEFA Euro Under-19 championship. A technically brilliant player and a maturity beyond his years, Griezmann will be looking to finally prove his worth. It is only a matter of time before big clubs come calling.
