Just over four months ago Inter’s mourning of the loss of the legendary coach Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid finally came to a head, as the manner in which Jose left the treble winning giants of Italian football sent shockwaves throughout every aspect of Inter from the club itself to the fans on the terraces and on the streets dropping a dark cloud of depression and doubt over what should have been the most glorious time in the history of the club.
It’s not that all Interisti didn’t enjoy the glory of the acheivements of the 2009/10 season but as the next season started after a busy World Cup summer, the buzz and passion around the club of the previous season seemed to have left with Mourinho and this was made all the more worse by the appointment of Rafa Benitez as his replacement. The big problem was that Benitez lacks Jose’s charisma and with the players already feeling downhearted a tension was created in the changing room that was affecting the performances on the pitch.
Fast forward to a year ago and with the now despised Spanish coach gone, the likable Brazilian Leonardo took the reigns and the Nerazzurri of old seemed to reappear and stability within the squad was restored, admittedly in bigger matches Leonardo’s tactics left a lot to be desired but as the season ended there was a feel that in the 2011/12 season Inter would get back on track and return to their former glory under the tutelage of Leonardo. Then disaster struck Inter as newly rich PSG tempted leonardo away with an offer of his prefered role of director, leaving the Nerazzurri once again in a panic to find a replacement with the new season fast approaching.

It was this panic and a lack of long term strategy that caused Massimo Moratti to make the biggest mistake of his time as Inter president; he made the controversial decision to appoint Giampiero Gasperini as head coach even though it was common knowledge that he only ever used his trademark 3-4-3 formation and would not ever change this to suit the players available. This was the beginning of the worst period in Inter’s history, with the players’ confidence at an all time low from the lack of stability at the club. The departure of the influential forward Samuel Eto’o made matters only worse. Gasperini forced his three man defence tactics on the most unsuitable squad of players in the league and the result, much apparently, was chaotic. By the time Moratti realized his mistake and removed Gasperini Inter, were faced with a long hard season and were sitting just above the relegation zone.
So yet again for the fourth time in less than 18 months Moratti was forced to employ a new head coach, but this time given the situation within the club and the shockingly low morale of the players there was only one choice for the position, that man was football’s very own ‘Mr Fixit’ Claudio Ranieri. Granted there were better tactical coaches Moratti could have opted for but to rebuild the crestfallen Nerazzurri, some special talents were needed and although he is considered an ‘also ran’ for not having a huge list of honours silverware wise, he is undoubtedly one of the best in the world at restoring order to the ranks and getting things working as they should.
All has not been rosy at Inter since he joined; at times the ‘tinkering’ that he is also famous for has cost Inter points but this can be excused as he needed to experiment to find a right balance in the squad. Surprisingly the best thing that could happen for Ranieri was when Wesley Sneijder got injured in November. This at the time seemed disastrous for the Nerazzurri but in reality it gave Ranieri the chance to go back to basics with the squad and revert them back to the traditional 4-4-2 formation giving them a balanced set up to work with as they worked to get back to the great form of old.

His ‘tinkering’ has had a positive influence also giving some of the younger members of the squad the chance to prove themselves as first team players with Faraoni, Coutinho and also Alvarez shining as the season has approached the half way point. Alvarez in particular, has been a major influence on the team’s incredible run of six wins in a row that has seen a rise from the bottom half of the table to now being right back in to the race for the Scudetto.
Last weekend’s win in the Derby Della Madonnina being the most important of the run of victories, not only for the chances of catching up the front runners but to beat arch city rivals in an away fixture showed that Ranieri has managed to reinstall the steel and belief that was evident back in the treble winning season with Mourinho. For devoted Interisti the win meant more than just closing the gap on both Milan and Juventus. It was also a proud moment when all the faith they have in the team was repaid after a long first half of the season where fans have had to stand ridicule and insults from rival communities of almost every big club in Europe due to the team’s major fall from glory.
So now, as Inter are back in the title race, what should one expect from Ranieri for the remainder of the season? The targets should be a top three finish in the league, to make it to at least the quarter finals of the Champions league and the final of the Coppa Italia but to achieve these goals Ranieri still has a big job on his hands with the return of Sneijder and Alvarez’s stunning form especially in the trequenista position he needs to evolve his work with the 4-4-2 formation in to a 4-3-1-2 or even a 4-3-2-1 to accommodate these two players to their full potential.
If Ranieri can prove he has the tactical knowledge to adapt his philosophies to these more modern formations this could really be the Tinkerman’s time to prove he has what it takes to win and at worst if he doesn’t then he has rebuilt the team to a point where a higher calibre coach can come in and guide the team forward next season. Only time will tell what’s in store but Inter and the Interisti are pretty confident about the second half of this season to be much smoother than the first for the mighty Nerazzurri.
