The woes of innumerable Mohun Bagan fans around the world didnai??i??t seem to end this season as the club had to endure yet another trophy-less campaign. The last time Asiaai??i??s oldest club went through such a phase was back in late 1950s when they finished both 1957 and 1958 without any silverware.
Mohun Bagan started the season with a lot of optimism after several big money signings and employment of British coach Steve Darby. However, their season got off to a poor start as they went out of ai???lucky tournamentai??? Federation Cup in group stages after playing poor football. Staying true to recent tradition, Mohun Bagan officials swiftly sacked Darby, replacing him with Subrata Bhattacharya-Prasanta Banerjee team. Under these former players Mohun Baganai??i??s performance somewhat improved in I-League.
At one point it looked like Mohun Bagan could mount an unexpected title challenge but their form fizzled out when I-League resumed after AFC Challenger Cup. Their hopes of securing a domestic title was hampered severely due to a shock loss against minnows Police AC while the decision of not playing IFA Shield didnai??i??t prove the best one, in hindsight. Mohun Bagan ended I-League disappointingly behind Dempo and had to see arch-rivals East Bengal finish runner-up. Their last I-League match against Pune FC also saw the iconic Jose Ramirez Barreto play his last match for the club.
High Points
Performance of Odafa Okalie. Odafa once against showed why he is considered as the best striker in India as he scored goals at will at times. Despite getting poor service from midfield Odafa scored goals, often doing everything on his own. Mohun Bagan could have ended up in relegation zone if they didnai??i??t have Odafa to bank on this season.
Performance in Kolkata derby. Last season Mohun Bagan failed to win a single derby against East Bengal. Things improved dramatically this season when the Green & Maroons didnai??i??t lose a single derby and clinched two important victories. Their 2-0 victory in I-League with a depleted squad especially deserves praise.
Low Blows
Federation Cup, the tournament where Mohun Bagan enjoys success second to none proved to be a massive disappointment. They were expected to qualify easily from a group containing Churchill Brothers, Lajong FC and Royal Wahingdoh but Bagan slumped to embarrassing defeats to both North Eastern teams before bowing out.
Loss to Dempo. The 5-0 loss to Dempo in first leg of I-League was the heaviest defeat Mohun Bagan has suffered against an Indian club in last 37 years.
Loss to Police AC. Mohun Baganai??i??s loss to Police AC, a newly promoted club was embarrassing. The team coached by ex-Mohun Bagan legend Shishir Ghosh not only picked up a famous win but also blunted Mohun Baganai??i??s title chances.
Performance against Prayag United. Mohun Bagan lost to Bhattacharyaai??i??s former club Prayag United quite frequently this season. United are building up a strong squad for next season and Mohun Bagan must look to avoid a repeat of the same performance next season.

Player of the Season
Was there ever any doubt? Some players are worth splashing cash and Odafa OkalieAi??is surely one of them. Indiaai??i??s most expensive player made justice to his price tag by single handedly winning Mohun Bagan a number of matches. Odafa lacked proper fitness for much of the season but still managed to notch 36 goals in 34 matches. Odafa was off-colour in Federation Cup but he scored crucial goals in Kolkata Football League as well, including two virtuoso performances against BNR and Aryan.
Signing Odafa was perhaps the brightest point of Mohun Baganai??i??s season and it looks that he will be staying in the club for at least one more season. Odafa also rose to the occasion in the most important match of Mohun Bagan calendar, the Kolkata derby. His goal from the spot ensured Mohun Baganai??i??s win in first derby of the season while he scored again during the 2-0 win in I-League. Footballers in Kolkata are often judged on basis of their performance in the derby and Odafa has certainly passed with flying colours.
Other Top performers
Another new signing, Syed Rahim Nabi was Mohun Baganai??i??s most consistent player for most of the season. The versatile player played in defence, wings as well as attack when needed and always made valuable contribution. He was rightly selected as the best Indian player for last season. However, Nabiai??i??s form did drop dramatically in last 2 months of the season. The Pandua born player had a horrid time in AFC Challenge Cup and never really recovered his form after that. His off-form in later matches was one of the primary reasons behind Mohun Bagan getting knocked out of the title race.
Jewel Raja had already made his mark for India U23 as well as Arrows last season. Any lingering doubts as to how he will adjust in a big club were dispelled away thanks to his consistent performances. In an otherwise weak central midfield, Jewel was often the glue that held rest of the midfield together. There are numerous facets of his game which needs improvement, notably his ability to play the killer pass but he has plenty of time to get better. The 22 year old also scored a commendable 5 goals for Mohun Bagan this season.

Flop of the season
The Manipuri full-back, Surkumar SinghAi??used to be one of the best players in India at his peak but sadly, he is no longer fit to play in a top club. Surkumarai??i??s game was always dependent on physicality and pace and with age both of these factors have taken a hit. His defensive positioning was also suspect as he was caught woefully out of position multiple times.
Best Performance
Mohun Baganai??i??s performance against Dempo during first half in the 2-2 draw in second leg of I-League was possibly the finest football showcased by the team in last half a decade. However, the most memorable performance award will go to the 2-0 victory over East Bengal in Kolkata Football League. Mohun Bagan lined up for this match without Barreto and Sunil Chhetry and was clear under-dog. Subrata Bhattacharyaai??i??s masterstroke of marking Penn Orji and Tolgay with Daniel Zeleny and Masih paid rich dividends as East Bengal looked toothless in attack. A mistake by Sandip Nandy allowed Odafa to draw first blood for Mohun Bagan. Youngster Manish Bhargav scored a wonderful header to make it 2-0, game, set and match.
Worst Performance
Mohun Bagan fans will want to forget the embarrassing 5-0 loss to Dempo in I-League. The Mariners had not lost a match by such a margin against teams from outside Kolkata till now and this was their worst loss to an Indian club since the infamous 5-0 loss in Kolkata derby in 1975. The Mohun Bagan defence completely failed to handle Dempo attackers as the 5 time champions took a 2-0 lead within first ten minutes. Goals from Naik and Martins saw Dempo go into lemon 4-0 up. Joachim Abranches, who was later declared man of the match, score Dempoai??i??s fifth goal in second half to end a miserable outing for the Mariners.
Goal of the season
Again, an award which will go to Odafa Okalie for his second goal against BNR. With Mohun Bagan trailing 1-0 against BNR in Kolkata Football League, Odafa was introduced to salvage the match. Even he was largely quiet during regulation time. Then came injury time and Odafa exploded. He scored the equalizer with couple of minutes left in injury time and then scored a very, very special goal to earn Mohun Bagan three unexpected points. Odafa received the ball in midfield near touchline and then started an astonishing diagonal run. On his way he dribbled past entire BNR defence before slotting in an inch perfect shot past the BNR ai???keeper. It was a goal only he could score.
