If ITI, one of the biggest names in Bangalore football circle sharing a intense and passionate rivalry with HAL, existed even, they would have shed tears seeing HALai??i??s performance this season. Just one win out of 26 matches and a 3rd place in the BDFA super division, one canai??i??t expect HAL to win I-league or top 4 finish.
At least a well-fought relegation battle was expected by small but loyal fan base who come bearing the horrible traffic, weather and pathetic stadium facilities to watch their team play on the new artificial turf. However, they were badly disappointed this season, with HAL failing to win even one single match at home in I-league.
Curses were heaped on the managers and players, but inside everyone knew this was bound to happen with the departure of HALai??i??s legend Xavier Vijay Kumar, captain Murali and various other players, who left HAL seeking out greener pastures. While walking out of the stadium dejectedly, one could hear angry criticism about the management, fitness of the squad and old folks reminiscing the good old days of Bangalore football.
Future looks very bleak for Bangalore football and HAL, as they got relegated along with Chirag Kerala. Football Icon Baichung Bhutia displayed every Bangalore football fanai??i??s frustration when he came down to promote TCS 10k marathon, “We need a good professional club from Bangalore. HAL has done well but we need a private limited club like USFC. HAL, being a public sector company canai??i??t do certain things. Football has a huge following in Bangalore. There are also so many big corporates here. I think the AIFF should help out in finding investors. You need a nice club in Bangalore which is going to reach out to football lovers, the masses. We need the I-League in Bangalore, need a new professional club with new investors!“. But one cannot imagine Bangalore football without HAL, love them or hate them but they still own the hearts of every passionate football loving Bangalorean.
BDFA (Bengaluru District Football Association) super division
Defending champions HAL started out as favorites in the local league but fizzed out soon, as they neither had the fitness nor the bench strength compared to defence sector and army teams, which eventually led to a horrible run finishing 3rd in the table, topped by MEG(Madras Engineering Garrisons) and followed by ASC.
Federation Cup
Federation cup was another tragic tale for HAL, who were knocked out mainly because of their own mistakes and poor tactics, such as conceding a penalty in dying seconds against Pailan Arrows, losing to Mumbai FC after failing to hold on to the lead in the stoppage time and eventually losing out to Champions Salgaocar 4-0.
I-League
HAL SC started their I-League campaign at home, by going down 1-0 to fellow relegation battlers Chirag Kerala, which was followed by a heavy string of losses. There was a huge hype and expectations on HALai??i??s new recruit Alexander Sudovic from Serbia, who wasnai??i??t as good as YouTube projected and was eventually expelled from the club in mid season.
HAL SC had a brilliant first half against Mohun Bagan where they were leading 2-0 at half time only to lose 3-1. Their worst defeat this season has to be against East Bengal, where they lost 8-1 at home. The best way to describe HALai??i??s run this season is that they thought football to be a 45 min game. Blame for this has to be taken by the managers, Mr Thyagraj and Murali, who failed to use the tactics properly.

The only bright spark this season was young Indian teenager, Malemngamba Meetei, who used to make experienced defenders and center-backs tremble with fear with his incredible runs. He can definitely add some spark to Team India if heai??i??s selected. HAL finally ended their dismal I-League campaign by just getting one win in 25 games. They were eventually relegated with just 8 points out of possible 75.
Reasons behind HALai??i??s failure this season
HAL campaign this year was full of loopholes and the noteworthy oneai??i??s are –
- No proper replacements – With the departure of experienced players like Xavier,Murali and unavailability of Nepalese Rohit Chand, there was none in the team who could replace the hole they had left, which eventually led to many position changes and lack of adaptation by many players.
- Poor fitness and bench strength – Fitness levels of HAL players where very low even when compared to Indian standards and by half time players where either exhausted or injured. Bench was filled by youngsters who hardly had any game time or old horses who could just run around for maximum 10 minutes.
- Inefficient Tactics – Tactics used by managers was the one of the main reasons for HALai??i??s relegation this year, if the team was leading they would use cautious approach which eventually lead to horrible defeats and relegation.
Future looks very bleak for HAL SC and their chances of getting promoted appears slim but even if they get promoted surviving in I-League will be a herculean task. HAL SC officials need to pull up their socks, ignore their office politics and elections,and for a change need to concentrate on this age old club which brought Bangalore glory.
