Pep Guardiola’s FC Barcelona are widely regarded as the greatest football team of their generation; they’ve won every major trophy in European football (league, national Super Cup, Champions League, European Super Cup and Club World Cup) bar their national Cup at least twice (and they are huge favorites to win their second Copa del Rey this season as well) in the past three years, doing it with a brand of football that made the world fall in love with them.
But this season, there have been some signs that Barcelona’s era of dominance might be coming to an end. While the Catalans keep dominating the head-to-head with eternal rivals Real Madrid – beating them at the Santiago Bernabeu in the league, beating them over two legs in the Spanish Super Cup and eliminating them again over two legs in the Copa del Rey -, they have a shown a kind of vulnerability in the “smaller” fixtures never before shown in the Pep Guardiola era. After yet another away draw, this time at El Madrigal, Barcelona are now 7 points behind Real Madrid in the standings and will need near perfect form until the end of the season to defend their league title.
While complacency and tiredness have been pinpointed by most as the reasons behind Barcelona’s decline in performance this season, the major reason has been AndrAi??s Iniesta’s constant injuries. The numbers don’t lie and they show that Barcelona have only lost 1 of the last 100 games where Iniesta started, barring the match at the Emirates stadium last season (a defeat that would prove to be inconsequential after Barcelona overturned the deficit in the second leg). This season, 9 of the 15 points Barcelona lost in La Liga came in matches where Iniesta was unavailable and 4 in games where he was just coming back from injury.

While Xavi and Messi are usually lauded as the most important players in the team, it has actually been without Iniesta that Barcelona have had their worst periods under Pep Guardiola. In 2008/2009, a 10-point lead at the top of La Liga became a four point lead in a matter of three games with Iniesta sidelined. The club’s only elimination in the Champions League since Guardiola took over also came with Iniesta sidelined for the tie against Inter Milan. There’s no doubt that Iniesta is just as important as Xavi or Messi, if not more.
Iniesta’s shooting and finishing might be his weakest point, but he’s arguably the best player in the world outside the box. As many opponents at the club and international level have found, his amazing control, dribbling in tight spaces and on-pitch intelligence, comparable to Messi’s, makes it almost impossible to dispossess him, while his vision and passing range, comparable to Xavi’s, make him an even more dangerous player. Besides, the Spaniard has that Jordanesque ability to step it up a notch in the biggest stages, as Holland and Manchester United found in the past and as Real Madrid have found out recently in the La Liga ClA?sico at the Bernabeu.
With Iniesta on the pitch, Barcelona have two players capable of dribbling through the middle in Messi and Iniesta. When the Spaniard is out, stopping Barcelona’s attack becomes much easier; while Busquets, Xavi and Fabregas are brilliant passers of the ball, none of them can offer even close to the same penetration as Iniesta. Opponents can focus almost solely on stopping Messi, who’s the only one who can give the team a cutting edge in Iniesta’s absence.
Pep Guardiola has always said that the midfield is the most important area in his system, and only Iniesta can complement the skill sets of the other Barcelona midfielders, making the Barca midfield a force to be reckoned with. The likes of Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara might one day be able to offer a kind of dribbling and penetration skills comparable to Iniesta’s, but as of right now the latter is absolutely irreplaceable in the Barcelona set-up.
If Barcelona are to continue their dominance this season, they will need Iniesta to fully overcome his hamstring issues and be at his best for the remainder of the season. If that doesn’t happen, Barcelona are extremely unlikely to win either La Liga or the Champions League. The drop in quality when Iniesta is sidelined has been very evident and there seems to be no way to make up for that void.
With about four months left in the season, this is the time where the major competitions will start being decided. For Barcelona, this season is a chance to further add to their status as this generation’s greatest team and AndrAi??s Iniesta’s fitness and ability to overcome his constant hamstring injuries might very well be the difference between great success and failure.
