International football in 1980s is characterized by three of the finest individual performances ever seen on big stages in the sport. Sandwiched between Paolo Rossiai??i??s unexpected and surprising golden run in 1982 World Cup and Diego Maradonaai??i??s god-like performance in Mexico ai??i??86 is a performance which was arguably as good as both, if not better. Enter Michel Platini and France in Euro ai??i??84.
Donai??i??t let the media glitz, glamour and mythical proportion of 1986 World Cup fool you. Diego Maradona might have dominated the scene in second half of the decade but there was no player in the world, including him, who could come within a touching distance of Michel Platini between 1983 and 1985. In this period everything Platini touched turned into gold. He won two Serie A titles, a Cup Winners’ Cup, an Intercontinental Cup with an all-conquering Juventus team. He also raked in individual awards faster than the number of hair metal bands which kept springing up at the Sunset strip in this period – A hattrick of European player of the year awards, a hattrick of Serie A top scorer awards with a total of 54 goals in three seasons, a top scorer award in European Cup in 1985, a goal in the tragic final in Heysel, a man of the match award in the Intercontinental Cup testify Platini’s dominance in the era.
Yet, despite his magnificent achievements in club level what elevated Platini from being a supremely talented player to one of the all-time greats was his exploits on his home soil in the summer of 1984. Aided by his majestic form and playing some of the best football ever seen, Michel Hidalgoai??i??s France etched their names on the annals of football history.
You canai??i??t say that their success was a surprise. Bookmakers had selected the hosts as a pre-tournament favourite, thanks to their performance in the world cup two years back. France won hearts but failed to reach the final after a classic but controversial semi-final loss to West Germany. Les Bleus had evolved in these two years. Joel Bats in goal with Yvon Le Roux and Patrick Battiston had strengthened the defence. Luis Fernandez had joined the famed Platini-Jean Tigana-Alain Giresse midfield to turn the magic triangle into a magic square. It was a perfect midfield. Most importantly, Platini had honed his goal scoring skills to perfection. France had often struggled to finish the bundle of chances they created. Not anymore.
France made a stuttering start to their campaign. Platini was bottled up by Klaus Berggreen as France struggled to break down a resolute Denmark defence. Twelve minutes from the final whistle Le Roi finally broke his shackle. Platini escaped his marker for a split second, to fire a shot which took a slight deflection before hitting the net. France had survived a nervy start and they were about to hit their groove.
Neighbours Belgium were one of the dark horses in Euro ai??i??84, having reached the finals four years back. Fielding the legendary Jean-Marie Pfaff in goal, the ai???Red Devlisai??? were known for their stubborn defence. Their defence, however, had never faced anything like the magic square. Giresse and Platini ran riot in the Belgian defence as the latter scored Euro ai???84ai??i??s fastest goal on 4th minute. Giresse and Fernandez added two more as France went into the break 3-0 up and firmly in control. They were still relentless as Platini scored two more goals ai??i?? a penalty and a header, leading his side to a 5-0 whitewash.
An already eliminated Yogoslavia played without pressure as France struggled to put away their chances in first half of the third match. MiloA? Ai??estiAi?? put the Eastern Europeans ahead on the half-hour mark. An upset on the cards? Not with Platini on the field. In an eighteen minute riot act in second half Platini single handedly put France 3-1 up. Another perfect hat-trick. A goal with his left foot, a header, a goal with his right foot. In that order. Platini had notched up 7 goals in 3 group league matches.
Portugal, who qualified at the expense of defending champions West Germany provided a stern test to the hosts in semi-final. In front of a boisterous Marseille crowd, France took the lead through a Jean-FranAi??ois Domergue free-kick. France completely dominated the match after taking the lead but were unable to get past Portuguese ai???keeper Bento who was in an inspired form. They were made to pay for their profligacy as Rui JordA?o scored an equalizer against the run of play on 78th minute. Extra-time beckoned.
Rui JordA?o soon shocked the home crowd as his volley gave Portugal the lead on 98th minute. After the heart-break of 1982 world cup, France was suddenly looking at another exit despite dominating the match in normal time.
Like Lillian Thuram fourteen years later, Jean-FranAi??ois Domergue too picked up the big stage to score his first and second goals for the national team. The defender latched to a short pass from Platini to bring France level on 114th minute. The ai???Platini Euroai??? was never destined to have a game where he wouldnai??i??t score. Desperate to avoid dreaded penalty shootout, Tigana made one last ditch run past his marker and passed towards Platini. Platini received the low cross. Time froze in Stade Velodrome for a few seconds. As if he had all time in the world, he coolly chipped it past Bento. Game, set, France had clinched the classic match. ai???I’ve not seen a match like this in yearsai???, said BBC commentator John Motson. The first truly great match in Euro history, according to many.
France were overwhelming favourites in the final and they did dominate Spain for long periods. However, they had to wait for 57 minutes before the first goal was scored by, you guessed it, Michel Platini. The French captain was aided by some good fortune as Spanish ai???keeper Luis Arconada spilled his free-kick. Bruno Belloneai??i??s late strike, first of Franceai??i??s 14 goals in Euro ai??i??84 to be scored by a striker, put the match well beyond doubt.
For the first time, France had won a trophy in a team sport. On their way to the title they breezed past most opponents, scoring an average of 2.8 goals every match. Platini, never a striker per se had scored 9 goals in 5 matches, a record which will perhaps never be broken. The worldai??i??s best player had lived up to his billing.
