It is somewhat of a surprise, that Paul Jewell’s Ipswich Town side have managed to turn around a bad run of form which saw them manage seven games without a win. At the expense of West Ham United, the Suffolk side have launched a run of ten games where 23 points out of a possible 30 have been collected. This can only be seen as the way forward for an Ipswich side that can mathematically still make the play-offs.
Earlier on in the season, Ipswich were anything but good, showing the inconsistent form and conceding ability of a relegation candidate. Teams such as Nottingham Forest rooted to the bottom half of the table, hadn’t scored in seven games until they got a free hall pass against Ipswich at Portman Road, netting on three occasions; Watford scored two late goals to take all three points in Suffolk and not to mention, the horrific display during the early stages of the season which saw Town stoop to an all time low with a 7-1 drubbing against Peterborough at London Road.
Ipswich fans were dreading what could happen next; relegation was the thought on many minds. With no sign of improvement, when it mattered most in front of the home faithful, Jewell was under increasing pressure from the fans who wanted him gone. Virtually anonymous owner Marcus Evans stepped in at a crucial time, and controversially backed Jewell against the wishes of a large proportion of the Ipswich fans.
Something had to change quickly, so that Jewell could win back the support of the fans. His first move was to terminate the contracts of Ivar Ingimarsson and Colin Healy after their consistently poor performances, which was followed by the departure of a fans favourite Shane Oai??i??Connor. The player being released after his only appearance in a blue shirt under Jewell was against Arsenal at the Emirates in the Carling Cup semi-final loss last season.
After losing away to Leeds due to some horrible defending and less than ideal debut for on loan keep Alex McCarthy from Reading, Town took on West Ham at Portman Road. Many town fans resisted the idea of their team beating the likes of West Ham, who were at the time on top of the League.
But the unthinkable happened.
Ipswich ran out 5-1 winners, which turned out to be the moment of complete turn around in the faith of fans towards Paul Jewell. Since then, Ipswich put on a consistently good run and the likes of Daryl Murphy, Jay Emmanuel Thomas, Michael Chopra, Lee Martin and Luke Hyam have changed the fortunes of the side completely.
Wins against Coventry, Portsmouth, Cardiff, Bristol City and most recently Burnley, have fired the tractor boys into the public eye, often being labeled as one of the most entertaining football teams to watch in the football league. The stats speak for themselves – 128 goals have been seen in Ipswich Townai??i??s games this season and thatai??i??s just in the League. 61 of those goals being scored by the blues, the third highest goal tally behind leaders Southampton and Blackpool.
Although town have conceded 67 league goals this season, their ability to match up against some of the best defences in the league hasnai??i??t gone unnoticed; gaining draws against some of the most formidable teams in the championship from an attacking and defensive point of view. Ipswich owe a lot of their success to Keith Andrews – the on-loan midfielder netted on 11 occasions during his stay at Portman Road – but little cannot be said about the efforts of Michael Chopra (14), Jay Emmanuel Thomas (6) and Lee Martin (5), who have all been in superb form over the last 10 games. The consistency of the make shift back four of Carlos Edwards, Damien Delaney, Tommy Smith and Aaron Cresswell, has been surprising for most, who wouldnai??i??t have even imagined any of these four playing on the same pitch together, let alone putting up a tough defensive barrier that many struggle against. The turn of fortune within the club can only be put down to man management, the coaching and the huge backing from the fans.
An example of good man management has not only been seen by Paul Jewell, but by Marcus Evans and the board of directors who have continuously backed Jewell throughout his time at Ipswich. A lesson probably better off learnt after dealing with the likes of Jim Magilton and Roy Keane.
Evans is a businessman of many backgrounds willing to back Jewell with whatever it takes; that stability and mentality within the club, nurtured through the capacity of running a brand well, will spread within the fan base and will make an all around better club.
The football that has been seen at Portman Road of late exceeds most peopleai??i??s standards; maybe that charisma and determination can rub off onto next season’s campaign and launch a realistic promotion bid. That’s if Ipswich don’t make the play offs this season. There’s no denying that Paul Jewell and Marcus Evans are the way forward for this club.
