In a wonderful gesture, the Indian national team wore black arm bands to show their respect to Sailendra Nath Manna – the former captain of India who passed away earlier in the morning.
First Half
Gourmangi Singh wore the captainai??i??s armband for the first time as Samir Naik was rested by Savio but this decision of the Indian manager backfired as the Indian back line did not seem to have learnt their lesson from their game against Oman, as they went on to concede a goal against Azerbaijan in the third minute itself due to shambolic goalkeeping by Subhasish Roy Chowdhury. A shoddy Ai??clearance from the Dempo SC goalie gifted the possession to the opposition and Vugor Nadirov wasted no time in slotting in the first goal of the match leaving the Indian team shell shocked.
The Blue Tigers failed to recover from yet another early blow as their European opponents completely dominated proceedings for the rest of the first half. The Indian side was thoroughly outclassed in the middle of the park and Azerbaijan, playing in an all white kit, kept on bombarding their goal with crosses from either of the flanks. However, the Europeans were unable to put the finishing touches on their crosses.
The persistence of Azerbaijan finally paid off in the dying moments of the first half as they earned a penalty when Mahir Shukurov was brought down inside the box by Indian defender Raju Gaikwad. Mahir coolly converted from the spot to give Azerbaijan a two-goal advantage into the break. Meanwhile, Indian forwards looked clueless with the ball at their feet as Azerbaijanai??i??s keeper – Achayev Kamran was merely reduced to play the role of a spectator.Ai??

Second Half
The second half was an altogether different story for the men in blue as they looked a lot more assertive in their game play. India came really close to score their opener but Joaquim Abranchesai??i??s header was barely but successfully kept at bay by Kamran. Adil Khan and Jewel Raja went on to trouble the Azeri midfield but the later managed to hold onto their two-goal lead. The Europeans continued on with their attacks, but the half time team talk seemed to have revived the defensive play of the Indians as they looked far more confident in dealing with opposition attacks.
As the game progressed, the momentum of the game came down considerably with the players tiring out. Sushil Kumar again failed to make an impact ahead of the field and one must think that his days are numbered in the national colors unless his performances improve drastically.
All the Indian hopes of making a comeback into the match were dashed eightAi??minutes from time when an unmarked Nizami Hasiyev netted Azerbaijanai??i??s third goal from an inch perfect cross which came in from the right flank.
The match eventually ended 3-0 in favour of Azerbaijan as the Indians ended their dismal Dubai training camp by conceding eight goals in just two matches. Savio has a lot on his plate at the moment and needs to do a lot of thinking especially in the defensive department ahead of their AFC Challenge Cup campaign.
The team will fly back to New Delhi on 3rd ofAi??March for their final training camp before boarding the flight to Kathmandu the very next day, where they are scheduled to participate in the AFC Challenge Cup beginning on the 9thAi??of March.
