Ai??Sepp Blatter’s powerful statement was music to the ears of Indian football fans
My aim as the FIFA President stays to establish Football in the Continent of India. Continent rather than a country. I have been closely following the development of football in India. The FIFA Development Office is presently based in Delhi and the setting up of the Regional and the Elite Academies are a step in the right direction. I had referred to India as the Sleeping Giant during my last visit to India in 2007. But I know, the giant has started to wake up.
There cannot be World Football without India.
This sums up Mr. Blatter’s second visit to India on 9th of March and his first since getting re-elected. He wasAi??accompaniedAi??by the acting AFC presidentAi??Mr Zhang Jilong. This trip, which gave an impetus to India’s trip for hoisting the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017, ended with AIFF President Mr. Praful Patel announcing that India willAi??alsoAi??bid for the FIFA Club World club in 2015; two events which can change the face of the sport in the country for ever.
The two FIFA GoalAi??Programs have started to showAi??positive results. While the first Goal Project started in 2002 focussed on developing New Delhi as the hub of Indian football, the more recent second Goal Project has focused on taping the talent in North-East in addition to setting up a world-class training facilities inAi??Bangalore. These efforts coupled with the youth development program launched by AIFF have already begun to yield positive results with the U-16 team currently training in USA and the ongoing trials to select youngsters for regional academies are creating a lot of interest among people all across the country.
Mr. Blatter also went on to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and president Pratibha Patil to discuss about the various developmentalAi??activitiesAi??undergoing in the country relating to the game. The Prime Minister assured him all the required support to take the game forward and also guaranteed him full support to develop the infrastructure, if India gets to host the U-17 World Cup. He also supported FIFA on all fronts including granting taxAi??exemptions. After all these discussions, the U-17 World Cup seems a possibilityAi??and this is what the FIFA President said on the matter:
India has a very good chance as of now to host the tournament as it will give them an entry into the elite league and also will allow its U-17 team to play as a host nation. India must start working with an U-12 squad right away, who will be playing in 2017.

TheAi??representativesAi??of all I-League clubs except Arrows and HAL met on the 10th march to discuss the financial stability of the I-League clubs and also take a united stand against the AIFF ‘sAi??licensingAi??policy. The clubs are concerned by the non-profitabilityAi??of the I-League that has already forced big clubs like Mahindra United and JCT to shut down. The clubs have formed the Indian Professional Football Clubs Association (IPFCA) to safeguardAi??theirAi??interests and to promote football in the country.
This is what theAi??representativesAi??of various clubs had to say:
“We have had several meetings before and have come to a conclusion that such an association is required to safeguard the interests of the clubs. The association will work with AIFF and IMG to chalk out a future plan for Indian football. Our aim is to make I-League profitable and sustainable. There is no revenue model in place at the moment and we hope to change that scenario. The association wonai??i??t be a solution to all problems but itai??i??s a beginning”Ai??said Nandan Piramal the owner ofAi?? Pune FC.
“Even if we win all the tournaments in the domestic season, we only stand to gain Rs 2 crore. And our budget for a season is close to Rs 15 crore. What the AIFF pays is for the airfare and stay. That is only one portion of the expenses in running the club”.Ai??said Debashish Dutta of Mohan Bagan.
“This is the reason why established teams like Mahindra United and JCT shut shop. How long is passion going to run the Indian football scene.”Ai??said Shivanand Salgaocar.
The clubs have threatened not to meet the AFCAi??licensingAi??criteriaAi??until the AIFF listens to their demands and the AIFF in its defense has sought time till the 20th of April to come up with a road map. The clubs have decided that theAi??associationAi??will be funded by the member clubs and that the I-League Division 2 clubs and the U-19 teams would also join them in the coming years. An official launch ofAi??IPFCA is expected to happen soon.
The AIFF has taken a few positive steps by allowing the clubs to popularize and organize matches this year but a lot needs to be done to ensure the self-sustenanceAi??of theAi??clubs and one hopes for an amicable solution of the problem for the betterment of Indian Football.

Indian Women : Promising A Bright Future Ahead
The AFC in its bid to tap the talent at theAi??grass-rootAi??level and to spread more awarenessAi??among the women and uplift the women football in AsiaAi??organizedAi??AFC U-13 Fest for the girls in Colombo from the 10th to the 14th of March where teams from Bhutan, India, Iran, Jordan, Palestine and Sri Lanka featured. The Indian team was lead by Kashmina and were coached byAi??P.V. Priya who comes from Kerela. The matches were of 50 minutes duration each.
The girls from India, like the various boys’ teams last year, put in a splendid performance. The show began with a 9-0 demolition of Palestine in the opening match which saw Daya Devi scoring 4 goals. This was followed by a 7-1 rout of Jordan with captainAi??Kashmina leading from the front and scoring a hat-trick and a 7-0Ai??thrashingAi??of the hosts Sri-Lanka with the captain scoring another hat-trick. The match against Iran was always expected to be tough and it turned out to be so with the Indian girls edging out their Iranian counterpartsAi??1-0 thanks to a goal fromAi??prolific striker Daya Devi . The girls rounded off theAi??campaignAi??in style with a 13-0 drubbing of Bhutan and emerged as undefeated champions
The AIFF announced a cash prize of Rs 5000 for each of the players in the team and lauded their effort.
AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das said ” I congratulate you for the feat which you have achieved. Hope you will continue with this in the future tournaments. All of you have made the country proud.”

Its been anAi??interestingAi??month for the football fans in the country despite the national team’s failure at the AFC Challenge. Sepp Blatter may have said that theAi??SleepingAi??giantAi??has started to rise but the truthAi??remainsAi??that the sleepingAi??giantAi??still needs a lot of alarm clocks to finally wake up, and such visits from a top official are a timely boost.
AIFF ‘s decision to bid for the 2017 U-17 World Cup as well as the 2015 FIFA club World cup indicates that India has taken aAi??massiveAi??step to become a footballing nation with the club and federation fighting over theirAi??interests, reminiscentAi??of similar issues that exist in the European countries.
