The first time on a World Cup pitch can be a nervous moment for anyone, but when Pele and Garrincha both made their debut against the former USSR, they made history. After a goal-less draw against England, coach Feola made three important changes to his team, the most striking being a right-winger with a deformed leg. The team psychologist, Dr. Joao Carvalhaes insisted that Pele and Garrincha not play as they were ‘mentally unsuited to high pressure situations’.
The diagnosis was thrown out of the window in the opening three minutes of the match itself, which is dubbed as the “Greatest three minutes of footballing history”.
