November (and early December) was a very good month for Portuguese football. There were great matches between the top teams in both the league and the Cup, all four Portuguese teams will remain in European competition in 2012 and Portugal secured their berth in the Euro 2012 next summer.
The following is a summary of everything thatai??i??s happened in Portuguese football during the past month.
The Portuguese League
The month started with Benfica drawing 1-1 at Braga (in a very polemic game marred by a long power cut and racism allegations) and Porto drawing 0-0 at Olhanense. Despite the injury picked by Fito Rinaudo (one of Sportingai??i??s key players and an Argentine international) which will sideline him for several months, Sporting managed to beat Leiria 3-1 at home, thus recording their seventh consecutive league win and reducing the gap to Porto and Benfica to just one point ahead of the Lisbon derby, with Braga five points behind the leaders and playing at the EstA?dio do DragA?o in the same weekend.
Despite Braga and especially Sportingai??i??s valiant efforts, Benfica and Porto managed to win at home and open up a small gap at the top. Porto beat Braga 3-2 in a game where Hulk was sensational and a late surge from Braga was not enough to reverse the score.
In Lisbon, Benfica and Sporting played the tightest derby of the past few years. It was a very even game during the 90 minutes, with Benfica scoring a winner from a corner kick. Sporting had several chances to score, mainly through Elias and Wolfsinkel, but in the end Benficaai??i??s superior efficiency made the difference.Ai?? While Benfica deservedly won and opened up a 4-point gap over Sporting at the top, Domingos PaciA?nciaai??i??s outfit has every reason to feel confident about the future; it is clear that Sporting have improved a lot and if they continue getting better thereai??i??s no reason why they shouldnai??i??t challenge for the title until the end. While Benfica and Porto have maintained their domination for the time being, there are clear signs that Sporting will be a force to be reckoned with in the title race.
Elsewhere, MarAi??timo have maintainted their great form and have actually overtaken Braga in fourth place. They have only lost a match this season and have been truly on a roll. The Senegalian Baba has been the star of the team and heai??i??s the leagueai??i??s top scorer with 9 goals in 11 league appearances. It remains to be seen how long MarAi??timo can keep this up, but so far theyai??i??re the revelation of this yearai??i??s league.
VitA?ria de GuimarA?es have won their two games this month and are finally climbing up the table, while the likes of PaAi??os de Ferreira, Leiria and Rio Ave remain in serious trouble.Ai?? The league is so balanced (except the very top teams) that no one below 5th place is beyond being relegated, thereai??i??s only a six point difference between sixth place Olhanense and last place PaAi??os de Ferreira, after 11 games.
There will also only be two league games in December, with the most interesting fixtures being Maritimo against Benfica at home and Porto away. These will be the big tests to Maritimoai??i??s sensational start.

Portuguese Cup
In the 4th round of the Cup, the biggest shock was, without any doubt, AcadAi??mica beating Porto 3-0 at home and eliminating the three-time defending champions. Porto havenai??i??t been looking nearly as great as last season, but such a heavy defeat was a huge surprise, even if AcadAi??mica have been very good at home in the league. Benfica narrowly managed to edge second division side Naval in a game where Jorge Jesus rested some of his key players, while Sporting beat Braga 2-0 in the blockbuster match of the round. Braga played very well and had their chances, but Sporting were more clinical, with Diego Capel and Insua scoring the goals that gave Sporting the win.
First division sides Rio Ave, PaAi??os de Ferreira and Porto were all sent packing in this round.
In the last 16, MarAi??timo sensationally beat Benfica at home 2-1, in what Benficaai??i??s first defeat of the season in competitive matches (they were, prior to this game, the only undefeated team in Europe). Saviola put Benfica ahead from the spot in the first half, but Maritimo added to their fantastic season so far with a brilliant second half comeback (a result they will try to replicate this weekend when they host Benfica again, now in the league).
Maritimo will now face Sporting in the quarter finals, on December 21 at the EstA?dio de Alvalade (where theyai??i??ve already won this season, in the league). Being the only one of the Portuguese big 3 clubs still in competition, Sporting is expected to put an end to the title drought by winning the Cup, but Maritimo will surely do their best to stop them in the next round.
The other three quarter-final matches, also to be played on December 21, are AcadAi??mica vs Aves, Moreirense vs Nacional and Oliveirense vs Olhanense.
Portuguese Teams in Europe
November (and early December) has brought different fortunes to all Portuguese teams involved in European competition, but all of them will remain in Europe in 2012.
Benfica tied 2-2 at Old Trafford in a very tightly contested match and then beat Otelul Galati 1-0 at home, thus securing qualification and the first place of their group with three wins and three draws, with Basel getting second place and the likes of Manchester United and Otelul Galati eliminated. Having won their group, Benfica can be drawn against Napoli, CSKA, Lyon, Marseille, AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen or Zenit, and in theory should have good chances to advance to the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Porto played very well after a terrible start to their European campaign, but it was too late. Porto 2-0 win in Ukraine (with goals from Hulk and an own goal) meant that Porto only needed a home win against Zenit to qualify. However, a sensational performance from the Zenit goalkeeper and their very organized defense proved too much for Porto to overcome. Porto did play well, it was surely not in this match that they jeopardized their qualification hopes. As a consolation prize, Porto will get to defend their Europa League title.
Sporting beat Zurich 2-0 at home in what was essentially a meaningless match and will travel to Rome to face Lazio next week in a game with nothing at stake (for Sporting, Lazio are still fighting for second place).Ai?? Braga, on the other hand, beat Birmingham 2-0 at home and secured their place in the next round, although they will need to beat Brugge in Belgium to win the group.
There were three Portuguese teams in the Europa League semi-finals last year, and Porto, Braga and Sporting all look capable to make deep runs once again this year. If that happens, it is perfectly possible that Portugal soon overtake Italy and take 4th place in the UEFA rankings, which only highlights the good period that Portuguese football is going through at the club level.
The Portuguese National Team
It wasnai??i??t easy at all, but Portugal will be in the Euro 2012 next year, after beating Bosnia in the playoffs once again. The first leg ended in a 0-0 draw that left everything to decide in Lisbon. Ronaldo and Nani scored stunning goals in the first half, but some suspect defending meant that the score was 3-2 with half an hour left to play. But with Bosnia down to 10 men, Portugal had no trouble securing qualification with a 6-2 scoreline. It was by no means a very convincing qualification campaign, but what matters is that Portugal will be in the Euro 2012.
They might not stay very long, though. Portugal were drawn against their bA?te noire of recent years Denmark and the likes of Germany and Holland, two of the three best national teams in the world at the moment. It will truly be a huge achievement if Portugal manage to get past the group stages. That said, itai??i??s a great feat that Portugal managed to qualify for theirAi?? 5th Euro in a row and seventh international competition (since Euro 2000) in a row.
Player of the Month in Portugal: Hulk (FC Porto)
Hulk has been sensational this season, and even more so during this past month. He had a spectacular performance to help Porto beat Braga and he was the main reason why Porto was in contention in the Champions League until the very last day. He has not only been the best player of month in Portugal, but one of the best in all of Europe.
